  • Desperately needing help with a fuel pipe

    Hi everyone

I have had a friend do some work on my fuel tank and we can't find where one of the pipes from the neck goes too. We have 1 from the neck that goes to the tank then another one with a very long pipe that we don't have a clue with tried tracing it but don't know where it is meant to connect too over night it has leaked fuel a little bit. Can anyone help it is sending us nuts. The car is an Astra gte please help anyone and please be concise if possible cheers Alan

this may be the one that goes to the environment canister towards the front of the car ...... I'll see if I can find more on the layout ... I'm sure its been discussed here many times ..

There's four pipes coming down from the filler neck. The largest is obvious, to fill it. The second largest is to get the air out during filling it. Then there are two very thin ones, of which one connects right at the same face:

This comes from one of the two pipes right behind the filler opening:

The other one has a hose connected, normally to the canister purge valve on the engine, then on to the canister in the wheel arch. This is removed on some cars, on some it was never actually fitted. It would suffice to connect a hose on it down and tie it up on top of the tank flange.

Here's a nice image too, showing also where these hoses connect up to exactly. Here the vent hose is shown going to the back of the tank, and there it does not connect anywhere, is just laying about there in midst air...

On early cars one of thin hoses from filler spout is just clipped to outside of fuel tank on drivers side and vents to atmosphere,

Hi guys thanks for all the comments. The small problem I have is the at does not seem to have a carbon canister and the pipe would have been way too short to getto it anyway. Can I block this pipe of at the top of the tank of just leave it to air?? Don't want to blow up the car so any further advice would be appreciated. If anyone could chat about it my mobile is 07739 132262 I will ring you back if need be thanks Muchly Bigal's

Re: Desperately needing help with a fuel pipe

It is stock left to air on earlier cars, and on later models connected to the (open to air) canister, that equals leaving it to air, only through a jar filled with carbon crumbs. Then there is an electrically operated valve that opens from time to time.

If you block it you will pull your tank vacume and it might implode!

That little clamp you see there numbered 10 in the pic above, that's the only thing holding this 'breather' hose to the edge of the tank, where it is simply left to air...

I've never really understood how we can all freely let the petrol evaporate while filling the tank up, and make a fuss about the tank breating through a canister of carbon, it's not even breathing OUT, but sucking up air through the canister!!
