  • Gear box F20/F28 /Qs

Right my clutch has started slipping getting worse by the week.

Should i fit my F28 box which itself requires a new clutch to my 20XE with the idea of then just dropping the c20let in when its ready..........
............or do i fit a new 20XE clutch to my F20 box? Are they interchangeable like that? What clutch kit would work with F28 to 20XE and then later with c20let if thats at all possible.

Any help appreciated as always lads

The splines in the clutch center are different, the f28 came with the pot type flywheel which would be the way to go for ease to upgrade, although using a f28 clutch plate with the flat flywheel can be useable with a standard let
    hope that helps

ok cheers, so are you saying the f28 clutch kit inc. cover will mate-up ok with a flat type flywheel of my XE, but when it comes to the Let it may or may not be ok possibly if the let is standard tune?

        Re: Gear box F20/F28 /Qs

the F28 was only ever fitted to the LET, which only ever had pot flywheels, so the cover is deep reach and wont mate to your flat flywheel.

he is saying you can fit F28, use the F28 drive plate (bit with splines that slides over clutch input shaft) with your current 20XE cover and 20XE flat flywheel, as a make do

the drive plate is the bit thats likely to be knackered, so this would only require you to buy an F28 clutch kit (stash the cover for when you go turbo)

is the F28 set to go and converted for mk2 mounts then ?

clutch can be done with the box on as it has the inspection cover and retractable input shaft, but its a bit of a faff, slide hammers, odd thread in the end (M7)

It's easy Mark, as long as no pot flywheel is involved. No aligning tool req, for the F20, not sure about the 28?

If you are leaving the F20 on, just remove the end cover over the 5th gear, withdraw the shaft as per the manual and drop the clutch through the inspection plate. Insert new clutch, push shaft back in being careful to locate splines. Remove clips off new clutch and you are basically done.

20 min job .... or an hour if first time maybe .... that's from memory so check the manual, but it's a simple job.

I had a bill once from a Garage for changing the clutch, it was £400 some 12yrs ago ....!!

I refused to pay, asked them how the heck they come to £400?? Yep, they dropped the gearbox and all that entails ... oh the look on their faces when the light came on .... No charge in the end out of sheer embarrassment ...

Even then I had to take it back cos they forgot to fit the new release bearing !!!

While talking about f20's and clutches does anyone have a f20 clutch arm removed from a gearbox or an image of one at least?

Yes i think so, as it has come off a LET GTE 16v, it has 2 mounts still connected to it. Why? is there any modification of the mounting points on the chassis that need to be done first?

you have to modify the box, so sounds like a good buy already done

LUX is ok, you might want to think about an uprated one though, mine is 25% uprated and it only just copes ....
