  • Steering racks....

Does anyone know if the rack from calibra turbo has a quicker ratio than our beloved GTE's fourty seven thousand to one ratio!?

I heard rumor this is so...am wanting to improve this aspect of the car while I'm building it up...

Alternatively if anyone knows of a quickrack that needs a home, let me know and I'll man up, and convert to EPS at a later date if I resume wimp status!

The later Calibra and Cav racks I think are about half a turn quicker, 2.7 or 2.8 I think they are.

...So some truth to it then - Is it not specific to the Turbo variants then? Simply that the later racks were improved...I'll see if I can find a changeover date.

thanks for that, I'll see how this works out

Funnily enough was looking at this with Harvey a few days ago

I have the quicker rack on my rallycar - 2.75 turns lock to lock. Uses the square drive (plain drive) in the steering column and is made by ZF

Has the following part numbers on it.

        90473931
        0496 (probably manufacture date..??
        7836974192

        Hope that helps

I run a calibra turbo rack on mine, you'll also need to get the calibra turbo pipe unions (think its just the main feed pipe that's a different size thread to the astra) and I tried several hydraulics companies who couldn't match it up. Also as above the knuckle is different so need that too.

Could you get the part number off the unit? Would halp with cross referencing as mine is an unknown GM number!

              Would a MK2 cavalier rack fit a MK2 Astra?

I've still not checked my '97 Calibra v6 rack but from what I know all late Calibra's had the 2.75:1 ratio PAS rack fitted. I believe it may of been from late '95 onwards that the rack was changed. I'll check my rack when I leave work and post up when I get home.

Checked the rack on my '97 Calibra SE9, the daily hack, which has the 2.5 V6 fitted and you guessed......it has the 2.75:1 rack fitted. When I get the chance I'll try and see if I can spot the part number on it.

                      Re: Steering racks....

...Seems conclusive then, later racks are the way to go - cheers John w for the tip on keeping the unions. They the same fitting at that 'break' point on the n/s nearish the strut top?

I've thrown a std 16v rack on for now but that's just to move it round the shop and while looking at the piping to the reservoir noticed that abs and non abs run different to clear the abs pump and that my mk3 1.7d is if you like abs ready with the pipes looping up and over nothing!

                      - got it on it's wheels for the first time in about 12 months today! interior/exterior paint then swapsies from the donor car and we're off, aiming for a track day this April and some fun this year...

Just thought - I guess the upper part of the rubber disc coupling is the same as astra? just the lower that is profiled ( square) to match the rack?

                        Re: Steering racks....

Right then - am now the proud owner of the appropriate Calibra rack!

It does come with the coupling as suggested - however the upper (column side) is 'square' also....

So...I was thinking that a hybrid coupling is needed combining the upper (mk2) part and lower (calibra) part, then some piping etc and I'm home dry.....OR am I missing something really obvious!!!??? What have you guys used?
