I know I'm going to need to change the clutch, but not sure if it will bolt straight up to the gearbox mounts. Anyone know or have a guide to fitting the F28 into a Mk2 2?
i'll have a look through my pics in the morning. there's a few bits need grinding and re-welding for the rear bracket as there's 2 bits where the 16v bracket fouls the casing. the front you just use the F28 gearbox mount with your 16v engine mount
ignore the extra bits welded on, they were extra bracing because my casing was goosed. you need to grind off the lip and seem weld it back up...you'll see what you need to trim off when you put the mount next to the box. the plate where the driveshaft goes in is just a normal F20 one, you'll need to drill & tap the casing for the bolts. mines got a spigot ring inside too
as for the speedo ring that's a job i've not done on my current box (didn't have the time and wasn't keen on splitting the gearbox if i'm honest) at the moment i've got my clocks set to KM's, up to 50 mph it's the same as my road angel upwards of that and it over reads (70 + 75 real speed etc)
hope this helps...best I can do at 1 in the morning
you will also need the flywheel, clutch and release bearing for the f28, the only part i had probs with was setting up the gear selector it took about 1 hr to get it where i was happy with it
wide ratio boxes have much bigger final drive than F28 though, less road speed more turning force like for like.
i tend to agree, i wouldnt put a 6 speed on an XE on purpose, just for the 6th. increased engine load trying to propel the car in 6th probably negates the fuel saving that youd expect from keeping revs down. significant weight difference in the box too, and significant increase in transmission losses also
i know someone who has gone back to a F20 because of it, but when alls said and done i wouldnt take it off it was already there on a car i bought.
you could use an flat flywheel, 20XE clutch cover and F28 drive plate like astrayorkie said. one would assume the clamping load was uprated on the proper turbo clutch cover though.
