  • Dual Tone Horn

The dual tone horn that comes as standard on the SRI/GTE....is it 2 tones of horn combined into one unit, or is it 2 seperate horns. I am asking because I now only have one tone of horn which is really lame....but I noticed that I have 2 seperate horns (and the other one isnt the alarm, just for clarity) - one which is just behind the grill, and the other on the passenger side wing.

    Cheers

Do they work off the same relay do you know?

          Re: Dual Tone Horn

Sorry to hijack the thread, but this is one of my car's little mysteries as well. According to the brochure it's supposed to have twin horns as well, but it's only ever had the one behind the grille. What's weird is that I had all the loom out when I repaired the front end and there's no connections on the loom for the additional horn, and no obvious mounting point on the inner wing.

Any chance someone can post up a photo of their twin horns or tell me how they're connected, is it just a small loom for the second horn which piggybacks off the main horn?

I was looking at the horns on GTEmans car the other day and it has twin horns that have one loom down the passenger wing with separate connectors for each one. Mine on the other hand are connected up in parallel using one connection. I was taking bits off a merit back home and it was the same. Innes

Mine has two different horns... One behind the rad/Grille and one on the N/S Suspension turret.

I think it was only CDi and GTE's that had it... Our old 1.3L didn't have them nor' did our GL or Tiffany (Our's being the family's)

But I don't think the SR would... Cos' it wasn't as high specced as the SRi...

                  Not 100% sure...

Sorry... I was reading Pidgeonrat's post thinking it was the first.

Yes, a GTE, CDi, SRi will have two horns and they will work off the same relay I believe...

Sorry, it's too late for me

My CD has two tone horns. From what I can tell from my limited electrical knowledge, there's the one horn which is wired up as 'standard', then the second horn which is piggybacked off that using a relay almost like the circuit you'd use to power spot lights.

I've checked a few different brochures and the Autocar road test and all say that the SR has a two-tone horn... If it's just a seperate loom piggybacked off the main horn it's quite possible mine's been lost or removed. I know I'm not the first person to have crashed it as the old front bumper and indicators were all date-stamped "89", so it might've had some on-the-cheap insurance repair before and they didn't bother with the extra horn

                          Spot on.

One horn is positioned in front of the radiator, bolted to a bracket on the slam panel, the other one is bolted to the inner wing beside the battery.

Topic stealers - how dare you lol.

I am the worst person to answer questions about electric stuff....the only way i tend to fix things is by replacing EVERYTHING!

But anyway...back to mine...I am right in saying that if I connect the earth to the negative terminal, and the positive to the positive terminal and the horn doesn't sound - it is buggered?

And also that if the second horn doesn't make a sound (the one behind the wing) then I can rule out that it might be a problem with the horn push, the main wiring and the relay?

                              Cheers
