There is as with most things a nack to using sealant, lightly finger tight to squeez it out a very small amount then overnight to dry before tightening up fully. Cleaning and degreasing the joint area is very important for a good key as well, that and it's always easier upside down on a engine stand.
quiet hard to get bottom of block dry as it runs as playing with it in suite.

A rag and airline sorts that out, as does letting it drip overnight first.

I agree clean is the way to go for a dry engine. With my last xe build i made sure it was spotless and i was carefull with the sealant only used a thin layer on both sides of the sump gasket. I have seen lots with great big lumps of sealant squeezed out the mating faces "NO NEED"!!

Very true, if I was using a gasket as well I'd of used a lot less. Even so I did not use that much really...

Today started putting the engine back together, but a couple more problems. The bolt holes for the cambelt idler pulleys are m10 on the newer one compaired to m8 on the old one, probley as the engine mount is part of it on the mk4.

So drilled out one side of the bracket, but the other side runs though the idler and into the block. 2 choices either use a m10 to m8 reducer or open out the bracket and idler pulley hole, the idlers are hardend but I might be able to die grind it open. I will try a old one first if it's a little off center it wont matter as it's on the back side of the belt anyhow, the newer type idlers have the correct size hole but the guide lip is backwards on them and rubs on the early backing plate.

Ben the idler setup looks way better than on a STD XE... would it be possible to set this up on an XE block? OOPS I didn't realise there was an early and late type of pulley setup!

Is it possible to change mine to the late type with the round tooth belt cam pulleys? Watching the cam belt on the Dyno it scares me how much it flapps around with the long run from the cam to the low idler... this would eliminate that.

I can see what you mean, the (early) xev setup is tha same as the xe late. The later xev setup (astra 4 ect) is simliar but has a engine mount with the pulleys in.

Several things about though, only plastic pulleys are made prehaps not as good as the metal ones. The auto tensioner at the bottom is rubbish, if you turn the engine backwards when setting up a cam for example it can jump a tooth on the bottom pulley. This happend a couple of times before

I have been trying to work out if i could fit a early xe type to mine lol! As it's meant to be safer at revs.

Lol ok so maybe what I have is ok... I found that after running it I wanted to tighten the belt more and more. Can't see it with the cover on though

thats the only thing i really like about the later setup, the tensioner pointer thing which takes the guesswork out of it. might just be me though because my discretion on the early setup usually gives me supercharger soundtrack on the first attempt. theres something disconcerting about leaving an important belt ever so slightly, deliberately, loose.

i guess its also a benefit having a water pump sized hole in the back plate on late setup, but the frequency a water pump is changed, its barely an incovenience

Still will need to look at all this later on the x22 block without the water pump being fitted, time for a trip to the factors to borrow the belt and roller catalouges. I have in mind some INA metal rollers, but I cant be sure what engine I fitted them too hmmmm.

So about time for a update from the last few weeks I think, got some new bits and popped them on.
                      2012-11-25-263.jpg

Picked up a cheap bias adjuster and mounted it to the cage with a little bracket and jubilee clamp, so not a 100% if it will stay where it is so only temp for now till I'm happy. I had to rebuild one of the master's as well as there was a little weep out the back of one ho hum, then changed the pot to master hose with AP "rubberish" brake fluid safe stuff as the overbraid had a weep on as well.

I've made a little linkage up to use the choke's on the ITBS for a cold fast idle and will run a old style choke cable to the dash. Found some bolts and spacers for the bottom ball joints as well, m20 12.9!

Then slid the engine and box in and cranked it over all looks good so far Today was spent putting bits back on to get it to run soon...

Thats about it really I have been a bit slack at taking pics as well lol.

Oh and before I forget got a few bits for the 2.2 block plan and have been busy with the maths and designing for the front legs, both future plans but starting to look good

Indeed it will! Tomorrow (today?) should be running, all depends on my hangover lol! Still a lot more to do before it's back down on it's feet and bit's still to make.

PM me on the ARB and I'll get it paypaled? over to you

On a side line.. Feel like it's time for a trip down to the forest of dean for some MTB soon, so might pop by on the way back?

Cheers well that seems to of done the trick, it's runner!

Oil pressure is ok for the mileage little bit tappety when cold, but so far so good

I will swap to the ported head after some use, dont really need the expense of another head set just yet. It will be needed as a couple of the valve stem seals are probley weeping as you can see a little oil on them when I had it on the stand. But it's all easy enough, at least then I can measure the valve clearence and get the xer cams into as well.
