  • No power to the fuel pump, then no fuel ??

    I have just put the engine back into my astra gte after repairing the bulk head, its an 8 valve engine. I cant get the fuel pump to work.
    I have traced the wiring following the Haynes manual & have 12 volts through the fuel relay to the multi plug but no voltage to the fuse which is the next part of the circuit,if I put 12 volts to the other side of the fuse the pump runs? The immobiliser is in the circuit after the fuse so this is definatelly ok.
    Am I missing something simple as its not possible to follow the wiring behind the dash.
    Also when I get the pump to run there was no fuel through the pump, I thought I had put the fuel pick up pipe in wrong but after checking photos on here I think its fine, I have put in a 1/4 of a tank of fuel but it still doesn't come out of the pick up pipe, does the filter on the end of the pickup have a float in it or a valve???. Its so frustrating as I thought I was finally getting somewhere with this project. any help would be appreciated as I'm desperate to get her running again.

    Usually, the issue with the fuel pump not running is the relay mounted on the N/S turret. However that will not account for the lack of fuel when you directly connect 12v to the pump.

    Only thing I can think of to test in that instance is ....

    Attach (firmly) a length of wire to the supply side of the pimp (where the other end can be attached briefly to the battery) DO NOT MESS WITH power and petrol in the same place !!!!
    Remove large pick-up pipe from the tank end and drop it in a can of fuel.
    Remove engine end of feed pipe (feed or return) and place in a milk bottle/jam jar and connect supply to battery briefly to see if pump provides flow.

    AGAIN take care with Petrol and Power in same location (they only mix well inside the engine not outside) !!

    If pump provides flow then pump is ok ...if not then it may have gone dry and needs some priming but unlikely .... If flow is OK then maybe check the pickup from the tank (perhaps fit a tube and blow down it getting someone to listen at the filler for air or bubbling if air only then maybe pickup in tank is bent up from a previously sucked in tank {they can do this when vent blocked and they get vacuumed in and then return to normal later} but unlikely).

    I could go on and on {I usually do} but this should help first analysis.

    As for pump not running I think if the relay is good then the way it works is when engine is turning (cranking over or running) then the ECU senses the need to activate the pump so don't expect pump to be running unless its either being cranked or running ...

    Search fuel pump relay in the forum as its been discussed many times

      fuel pump is largely gravity fed once it gets up and over the hump from the bottom of the tank. no valve on the end of the pickup, just a plastic tea bag type strainer.

      the fuel relay is actually 2 relays inside the casing. as laurie said, one winding is solely for the fuel pump, the other winding does the airflowmeter, injectors, portion of the ecu which triggers the coil driver, various engine sensors or other valves depending on age of vehicle. ecu wont pull the second relay winding until it seems a crank signal.

      you sound like you are ontop of the wiring to be honest, but just wanted to mention it! from memory the fuel pump feeds comes from the relay and goes through the starter charging loom (rectangular connector above gearbox) before heading up to the X5 barrel shaped plug into the main car loom

        Thanks I should have done a bit of research before diving in and just trying it after connecting everything back up. I have gone through a few threads on similar issues and didn't realise the pump only came on when cranking the engine over , I had a quick go of blowing into the tank via the pipe from the pick up and it was clear, I also got fuel to the pump but no further I will have to check the regulator/damper before the filter to check it ain't blocked

          Hi Darren,
          I have had a bit of time to go through the wiring diagram and realised I have been looking at the wrong part of the circuit on the Haynes manual, there are so many variations I got a bit carried away when I had the book out in the garage. I will check out the circuit on the second part of the fuel relay, it must be something simple,
          As for the fuel issue I cant work out why the pick up pipe is bent, it doesn't look damaged but as if it was formed that shape, but it is definately in the right way up, going to have another go over the next few days, but I will have to get the car out of the garage as the whole house is stinking of petrol and the misses is going up the wall lol
