  • Classic car insurance

    Hi all

Do any of you have your cars insured on a classic policy?

Previously I owned a 1978 Opel Rekord as my 'classic', which was fine to cover on a classic policy with Norton/Heritage.

However, I sold that and then acquired my '87 Belmont GLSi last week. Ring up the insurance company, "yes no problem" they say, issue a cover note and everything is fine.

Until today, when I get a call to say "we've made a mistake, your car doesn't fit our definition of a classic anymore, so your premium must go up from 」80 to 」315". This is for a 3000-mile restricted, agreed-value (at 」400) policy. Can't use my full NCB as it's on my everyday car. Belmont is garaged, I'm 28, no convictions etc etc etc.

Ringing round some of the other 'big players' (Adrian Flux, Footman James etc) it's much the same story - "your car is under 20 years old"; "you are under 30"; "we only consider the convertibles as classics".

So am I saddled with an insurance bill equal to the value of the car (and much more than I paid for it)...or does anyone else know a good insurance company that will give me a reasonable premium for a classic policy? Or is 」315 actually a good price?

That's interesting, as Adrian Flux told me they wouldn't insure the Belmont as a classic. Guess that a 16V is categorised as one - I wonder if they think a 1.8 GTE is a classic, as my Belmont is just a four-door saloon version...

              Re: Classic car insurance

Well, after 1 hour of ringing round various big names...my local broker (A-Plan) got my business: 1500 mile, agreed value fully comp classic cover with Norwich Union for 」197, including 」150 excess and 」50 windscreen excess.

Next closest was HIC, who could do a 2000-mile TPF&T policy with Chaucer, for only 」14 less

HIC did note that normally they wouldn't entertain such a low-value (estimated 」400) Vx on a classic policy, but because it's such a rare beast and being used as a third car they would do it.

Sureterm, Firebond, Lancaster, Adrian Flux, Footman James - sorry, close but no cigar...

I guess the moral of the story is - always try your local broker!

i have classic car insurance on mine a h plate one. its actually a limited mileage policy rather than classic but its still seen as being a classic car insurnce policy. depends a suppose. seems tho on mine the more i have done to the car the cheaper it becomes, strange but true

                  Re: Classic car insurance

I spoke to Footman James at a classic motor show last year and they told me I could insure my car with them under a classic policy once it was 15 years old. So this year I gave them a call as my GTE is now 16 years old, I told them I had spoken to one of their reps at a classic car show and gave them my personal details and told them I had a 16 year old car, they seemed quite happy untill I mentioned it was a Vauxhall Astra GTE, and then I was put on hold!

They then came back on the line and told me my GTE did地t qualify as a classic car and I would have to wait untill it was 20 years old. This did地t seem right as they had seemed alright about it untill they found out the model of car. I guess they are concerned about boy racers trying to get cheap insurance on their old cars! I would地t mind but I知 hardly a boy racer!

I知 over 40, married, full NCB with a clean licence. The GTE is garaged and is on a limited milege policy, and I have a cabinet full of trophies to show how well I look after it! I just guess the bad boy image of the GTE go弾s before it!
