  • Front Nearside Tyre Wears Quicker

I'm finding my front nearside tyre wears quicker than the other side. I've got 2.0-2.5 mm (depending on where you measure it) on the nearside and 3.5-4.0 mm on the offside. I'm thinking roundabouts are the cause? I can't really remember if the previous pair wore like this or were more even. I had tracking done about 15 months ago and it was not out much at all. Wear generally looks quite even so I guess it's not tracking?

Anybody else get this on a daily driver especially a mk2?

Correct. Roundabouts and a large majority of right hand turns you perhaps are oblivious too.

You are right in thinking round abouts cause this also power steering ive heard can play some part in this

My last tyres went that way also bud

Mine were exactly the same - had an advisory on near side off side fine.

Hmm so my dilemma now is do I replace them with super sticky directional tyres and waste life of one each time, or with quite good non-directional tyres and swap them to get even life...

What sort of mileage are you covering (don't answer that if you have Insurance low use cover)

Camber of the road on N/S will always put a strain on tyres ...... As does the loss of grip on all the loose kack on the gutter side of the roads

However the good old process of switching tyres corner to corner (and or rotation) at service intervals is a good way to get the most from a set of tyres.

I've had them for 18 months and 20k miles so not too bad for fronts I suppose. They are directional so no option to swap them side to side.

Another stab in the dark, try one of then digital (laser) thermometers under different situations and see if any of the following apply .....

Checking heat difference on either side

Minor Brake bind on that side causing extra load
One piston not working as well on O/S reducing performance of that break loading the other ..

These will be "minute differences" and you may not be able to identify easy without striping them down but overtime may have an impact......

But I agree with the modern tyre grip levels and our crap road surface these days 20k is doing quite well.....

If they wore evenly I would get 30k out of them on the front. Front-back swap would probably net another 10k so a potential 40k out of a set of performance tyres driven in a spirited fashion on occasion I would say was fantastic.

You can swap directional tyres from left to right. All you will be doing though is transferring outside edge wear on the nearside to inside worn on the offside. Both tyres are still rotating the same direction. I've done it before with no dramas. I'll usually do 2x front sets for every rear set when it comes to changing tyres. Although, on my toys, 99% of the time I have changed the car before I have changed the tyres! :-)

Yeah Davey but that means getting them removed and balanced again, hassle and expense. Also the increased risk of damage to the wheels by the fitters (refurbed painted wheels so not as durable).

But strangely enough you have swayed me more in the way of going for the super sticky directional tyres.

Can you not swap front to back as they still go same direction if on the same side of car .... then I guess beyond that its a case of demounting tyres and refitting on opposite side wheels (must be cheaper even if done by your local tyre depot than running one tyre to its limit and then having to buy a new matched pair to replace one).

I'd be concerned on running directional tyres in the wrong direction for prolonged periods .. even if they held up to the task I could see a good excuse for Insurance to be void in an accident (ignorance is hot air when it comes to the law).

                            Laurie.

I suppose, but still cheaper than a replacement tyre. It helps if you bribe your local tyre fitter too. I get mine done for a fiver each time but this does involve regular trips to the unit with biscuits an flattery.
