  • Silky GTE - rebuild

The time has come for some bodywork, l've been threatening to do it for ages and after the rear quarter got keyed the other week l decided enough is enough and time to get it all sorted. Stripdown commenced today, not much left on the car and other than the dash theres nothing inside it either. Heres the pics of all the offending areas that have been bugging me since buying the car:

10:00 this morning, soaking wet after all the snow

    The manky back arch (N/S)

Wing all rusty behind the skirt and not visible with skirts on

Pretty sound here, was expecting more rust around the headlamp bowl but all very solid once the rust was ground out

    Same on the other side

All the door hinges are like this, is that normal to have the gap between the hinge and the A pillar? They are getting welded up either way

N/S/R arch/sill been patched at the bottom before and started to hole again so new ones are the answer

    Same on the other side

N/S/F sill and A pillar, knew there was a hole there, quite pleased with how solid it still is though

    O/S/F is near perfect

How it looks now - soon be back to rawping and terrorising the locals!

lts in better condition than l thought though really - l only bothered picturing the manky bits and theres not many for a mk2 really

looks familiar but generally in good nick .. shouldn't take much to get it back to original... nice to see your making the effort to keep it alive

Nice condition for the age really, not long until she is a minter again.

Popped into the bodyshop today on the way back from Winking Man meet to see how progress is with the GTE. Doors and bootlid are off and prepped, new sills and arches all welded in and finished now and very close to being ready for paint. Coming along very well, didn't have my camera with me so pictures will be on Monday hopefully. Really missing it and can't wait to have it all back in one piece.

Yep, although l am thinking long and hard about getting another car now as a daily driver just to keep the GTE mint - shame l enjoy driving it so much in all weathers!
