  • Re: Project Tarmac Rally Astra Mk2

Yeah I could have always been planning on running in the road rally class too!

My first time on epynt will be a very cautious one!

    Blyton, now there's an idea!

Had a few cheeky hours on the car today! Decided to give this mk3 dash a go, and with a bit of work it actually fits quite nicely I think! It's more rigid than the mk2 dash and the shape of it better suits the way I want to trim it down. Also bolted the roof scoop down properly. The major news though is the welding is finished!! That means now its a few final bits of filler on the arches and its time for paint

Next job now is to start trimming all of this back......

Today I set about starting a job I had overlooked for a while, strengthening the suspension top mounts. I know the group A manual shows the strengthening underneath but I could get the car over on its side enough nor did I fancy making the metalwork from scratch.

So instead I took the cheaters approach, cut top mounts off a donor and welded them up:

I also nearly have the dash finished off, the plan now is to take a fibreglass mould of the centre and driver side piece once I have obtained the shape which is nearly there

Took delivery of my brushable seam sealer, PU seam sealer and 3 litres of stonechip.

Quick question, I'm planning the following process for the underside:

Etch primer > seams sealed > stonechip > paint > lacquer.

              Anyone disagree with that?

looks alright. my only advice would be to test an area of stonechip on your seam sealer and primer, the stuff in 1L schutz cans is pretty tenacious, allot of thinners in it and can react badly

I have a huge smile on my face tonight! Just got home after having the rally scrutineer look over the car to see if there is anything I should change and had a gleaming report from him so that's a massive weight off my mind as far as the shell goes!

Very productive job this weekend on the smaller jobs too! The engine bay is finished now and is ready for paint, quick snap of the turret tips tidied up and the inner wing fully repaired after removing the battery tray.

The rear turrets are now looking standard issue after a quick skim and a bit of etch primer. Having a standard look was really important and I hope these will look great once in paint!

I put all the interior back in (forgot to take pics) so I could get the positioning for the hand break perfect. This was the most comfortable position whilst keeping access to all gears. Took quite a while to make the mounting bracket for it but it works well and has plenty of strength.

All that is left now is to weld in some tabs for the seat harnesses to secure to and sand back some more filler and we should be looking at primer!! Exciting times

well done mate. i bet he had an easy time as all your work is exposed, so to speak.

getting it all in one colour (even primer) will bring it all together for the wow i reckon

Partly the reason for having him there last night actually! I'm quite friendly with him so wanted him to see it for what it is instead of him looking for the hidden nasty bits (which don't exist)

And I totally agree, once it is all one colour the pictures will hopefully look more impressive!

                          Thanks again Paul!

Developed some real motivation again this weekend after going out for a blast in the road rally car (albeit in the passenger seat)
