  • Oh go on then...heres the devil car

I'm not very good at these things, but I will give it a go lol

I bought GTE number 6/7 (I've lost count) as it was advertised locally to me.

It was advertised initially at £2495, but after going to see it on the forecourt and pointing out the niggles, I got it for £1500. Yes, it is still overpriced, but its got a genuine 85k on the clock, and I just feel it was fate that I happened to see it on ebay classifieds.

She had been stood in a garage for 18 months, and had covered less than 3k miles in the last 3 years, so I felt she was worth the risk/money TBH.

The plan is to get her as clean as possible and keep her pretty much standard.

She looked clean from a distance, but on closer inspection, the wings both showed rust bubbling through, as was one of the arches, and the bootlid is a different colour white to the rest of the car.

    Worst wing pic:

    Worst arch pic:

I took her to two different people to get quotes, the first guy said he couldn't really quote me as he didn't know how long it would take him (in other words he didn't want the job), and the other garage offered me a deal if I paid in cash, so I went with that option as time is running out to get it done by Billing.

She is called Devil car, as I think she is going to be a bit of a naughty one, as in I already am on the hunt to find out why it feels so odd to drive up the road. We have changed track rod ends, had the tracking done, and next stop is lower arms and replacing the front bushes.

On my shopping list, was a pair of new wings:

Pair of new crystal effect indicators:

And some new Apex -30mm lowering springs (I had these on the turbo and got on with them really well) I will add pic of these later.

Took her to the bodyshop yesterday morning to get the arches done first...had a call from the nice man there, telling me he really doesn't know why he agreed to take on my car because already it has created more work for him lol

Turns out when he took the rear quarter trims off, the rear of the sills kind of came away with them. He was quite happy for me to go over and look at them, but as I don't pass that way at all, I declined and basically asked if he could replace them. He checked the fronts, and apart from a minor bit of treatable rust, they are fine, so thats what he is doing. In theory he should have her for the week, as he is doing her in between other jobs.

I will update when shes home

If it's a valver, that's about right tbh! They've all got dramas of some sort around that price range. Even £2K cars aren't without niggles.

its a good start, atleast you have owned a few so have the forethought to challenge the garages "value" of the car.

i think you have done the right thing getting the bodywork done, not sure if its just me but the tightrope of happy/furious astra ownership seems to come down to how good it looks (or getting it to look the least terrible). i can deal with wheel bearings, engine rebuilds, bushes and interior niggles, but when its exterior rust it just puts a whole downer on it

Well yeah, then it probably is a little on the highish side but, like you said, not like there is a huge amount to choose from out there.

Good luck with it. I'm quite taken with the 8v models after having one recently. The F16/8v combo feels a bit more eager than the F20/XE combo for me.

Re: Oh go on then...heres the devil car

Well the last 16v I had constantly tried to kill me by cutting out going round left hand bends, pulling out of junctions, and going across roundabouts.

So I will just stick to my ickle naughty 8v's lol

Darren, if I hadn't have got the bodywork done, I would have lost interest. Its the rot that kills them most of the time, so I want Devil car to be all pretty again.

Quite tempted to write to the last registered owner to see what he did with her, she's got a full stainless exhaust on, so he must have loved her at some stage

Looks like a nice project for you Mel.

As for keeping it standard, stop kidding yourself, you don't do standard!
