  • parcel shelf strong enough for 6x9's ?

just wanted to check, see how many have gone down the 6x9 in rear shelf path.
can it handle the weight ? any sagging after weeks / months ?

    cheers

It can't handle the weight will sag straight away and get worse. Best way to decent sound in a mk2 is decent replacement speakers in the factory positions and a sub for depth.

Or use an MDF Stealth shelf if you don't mind the additional weight.

Some shelves have a reinforcing bar along the middle. I've had 6x9s in my 1.3 for 12 years and it's not sagged yet!

I used a sheet of 9mm mdf cut to fit the bottom of the shelf, then bonded it on with expading foam. Filling the voids keeps the rattles down, I then recovered it in speaker cloth from maplins. That was hanging x2 12" free air subs and x2 6x9's, I miss that somtimes

I had 4 infinity 6x9's in the parcel shelf of my old gte, its never sagged at all. Infact i still have it in the garage and will use it again.

If its a gte shelf it may last a bit longer but having had lots of mk2's of all kinds and plenty with 6x9's in the shelf it will kill the shelf eventually unless you reinforce it. Like i said before you don't need them for a decent sound anyway just good components and a small sub for depth. That way you get good quality mid and treble and some nice punchy bass. Asking one speaker to do it all is never going to be good as seperate mid/treb and bass
