It can't handle the weight will sag straight away and get worse. Best way to decent sound in a mk2 is decent replacement speakers in the factory positions and a sub for depth.

I used a sheet of 9mm mdf cut to fit the bottom of the shelf, then bonded it on with expading foam. Filling the voids keeps the rattles down, I then recovered it in speaker cloth from maplins. That was hanging x2 12" free air subs and x2 6x9's, I miss that somtimes
If its a gte shelf it may last a bit longer but having had lots of mk2's of all kinds and plenty with 6x9's in the shelf it will kill the shelf eventually unless you reinforce it. Like i said before you don't need them for a decent sound anyway just good components and a small sub for depth. That way you get good quality mid and treble and some nice punchy bass. Asking one speaker to do it all is never going to be good as seperate mid/treb and bass
