Under carpet sound deadening

I was quite lucky in that the carpet in the Mk3 has long since shrunk, or so it seems - it certainly fits a lot better with the new insulation on top of the original stuff!

on;ly problem is it needs to be inch thick or whatever it is, otherwise the carpets dont fit

I fitted one of these kits to my Mk3 1.4 last year and it works very well, a definite step up from the standard deadening provided by GM;
Full Car Soundproofing Kit. Our kits can dramatically reduce noise, vibrations and also airborne noise created by the engine and from the vehicle.
Not exactly a cheap option but worth it, at least in my case as the car is my daily driver and the kit gives it close to modern levels of road noise. There's still a bit from the rear tyres but I suspect that's a limitation of a hatchback design more than amything.
