heater seal issue

when i bought my '88 Merit last year, i noticed various bits of black seal flying out from the centre vents, now these vents always whistle and let cold air in all the time.....manual says that matrix has to be removed to remove the air distribution box but does anyone know if i can get at the relevant seals without matrix or facia removal....alternatively i'll just tape over the vents in winter!

Yeah the crumbs will be coming from the vent flaps itself, not the heater box. So you can just deal with them one by one no need to touch the heater or its controls
