    Re: Tarmac "GpA" rallycar build.

This looks like its going to be a seriously fun project.

It makes me want to start something from scratch again.

      Thanks both..

Good day yesterday and started tackling the difficult job that is the rear turrets..

Started by cutting out the bottom part of the hole, down to the floor.

Then notched that back to the chassis rail itself and opened out the rest of the hole by slitting the spot weld holes and using some force.

Kept refining the shape of the turret needed and ended up with something like this..

Held in place for marking the final cuts..

      Measured and levelled

Todays job is the other side...

Not too many photos of yesterday as was cracking on.

Removed the rear turret on the drivers side then opened out the hole - slit the bottom and removed back to the chassis leg then opened out the top sections with a hammer.

Id already marked the turret with the shape of the other side so I cut that out, trial fitted, fettled and eventually tacked it in.

Both sides now tacked in - waiting for Ste the welding guru to finish them off!

I then carried on removing all the interior bracketry and started making up cardboard templates for the engine bay plating.

            Re: Tarmac "GpA" rallycar build.

I thought that would be the best option as I didnt have to cut out any more than necessary then.

It looks a bit shit at the moment but will look fine once fully welded in.

The bottom inside edge of the turret is flush against the chassis rail so will have a very strong weld there. The cage will brace off the turrets too and have a cross piece so they wont be moving anywhere!

              Update time..

Converted the mig to take big bottles - these are rent free SWG hobbygas argon/co2 mix.

Ste the welding guru came over in the week and welded the turrets for me.

              Inside the arch..

              Inside the car..

Also picked up a donor car for the engine block (1800cc so will be bored to correct 86mm bore for 1998cc) and box and few other bits too.

                  Hi Darren

Im probably keeping them in case I go 15" on the roadrally car once my 14" tyre stock has run out. However I have a pair of 15" Astra Mk3? alloys to go if interested.. Theyre 6 spoke ones but I dont have the centre caps.. Like this. PM me if interested,

                      No problem.

If I didnt already have 2 sport wheels freshly painted in white then Id sell them but these 4 will then make 6 in total which is useful to keep the 2 spares on the same rim types..

                        Re: Tarmac "GpA" rallycar build.

Been cleaning seams with knotted wheel, flapdisk and blowtorch ready for seam welding and Ste came over last night to help...

Engine bay and strut tops start to be seam welded

and inside the car has holes plugged and seams welded on the passenger side

This weekends job is to finalise and tack fit the engine bay strengthening plates and clean more seams!

lovely job, must be a joy to weld an astra that is actually still metal

                            Re: Tarmac "GpA" rallycar build.

Ste is an excellent welder so all credit to him :-)

Made up the first batch of strengthening plates for the engine bay. 2 plates around each turret and 2 corner pieces for the bulkhead to chassis leg.

Then cleaned up the other seams in the engine bay..

Removed the tar pads in the bulkhead and stripped the seams

And cleaned up the drivers underside of the car as well. This also shows the good penetration of the seam welds on the passenger side.

Now onto something slightly different... This is the front end from the yellow mk3 astra earlier in the thread..

This is the front end of another mk3 astra I have here.. Why do you think Im stripping the front end from this one?

the most inventive thing i could think of is you want the pusher fan from the aircon mk3 cross membeer to fit to your mk2 to save space for a massive exhaust manifold and turbo the other side
