  • GTE 16v. Proud Owner At Last!

I have wanted a mk2 GTE for many years now.. Having owned mk2 astra’s in the past I knew one day I would have to own one of these iconic hot hatches.

My last mk2 Astra was a E plate 1.3 way back in 2000. Sadly I wrote that one off. Shame because it was an SRI replica rolling on 15 inch Team Dynamic Monza alloys, it was lowered and I had recently rebuilt the cylinder head because those 1300’s used to eat cams the way I drove them anyway!!

I have owned a large number of Vauxhalls including a Nova GTE, Nova SR’s, Calibra 16v Redtop, Vectra Sri V6 to name a few…. It has been a good 6 years since I have owned a Vauxhall, the closest thing being a Saab 900 turbo.

So here we are in 2011. My new year resolution was to buy a 16v GTE. It didn’t take me long to succeed on this. I had been scouting around for a while but nothing appealed or it was too expensive or miles and miles away. I joined this very forum a few days ago and noticed a very low key advert in the for sale section. I hadt no pictures and limited information but was based locally so was worth a look. Emails exchanged and pictures received I decided it was worth a look.

On Sunday the 2nd of January I made the journey to Manchester to view it armed with the cash. It is fair to say the pictures I had seen did not do the car justice. As soon as the door to the garage opened that was it I knew it was going to mine! Colin has clearly done a lot to this car over the previous year and I would like to thank him for his efforts.

I plan to keep the car as standard as possible. Although I will make some very minimal choice upgrades along the way. It will not be a daily driver until at least May l if I choose to. It does need quite abit of work completing to get it to a standard I will be happy with but that is all part of the fun!

    Here is my list:
    Body-
    New front wings
    Bonnet resprayed
Rust on roof/A pillar needs sorting
Rust on NSR arch needs sorting. Is not bad (yet!)
    Refit sideskirts
    Inspect bulkhead
Remove carpet and inspect floor. Carpet very tired.

    Mechanical/Electrical
I think the gear box is buggered so probs going to fit a F20 along with a new clutch as the release bearing sound like a box of nails being shook about.

The engine seems ok although looks like the sump has a leak so will sort that and just maintain the service schedule
Fit headunit. Standard one was supplied with the car

Drivers electric window non operational : fix

The exhaust is slight out of line at the back so will straighten that up

The engine bay and bodywork need a darn good clean so will do that along
    the way…

This list is bound to get longer as I do bits and bobs along the way!!!!

Below are a selection of pictures showing good at bad bits of the car. Enjoy

Very nice, I see the bonnet is a different colour. What does the colour code say on the vin plate. I'd guess 256L which is a blue .. and I suspect the car is a metalic black from the pictures?
If so the colour you want will be Black Starmist.

Re: GTE 16v. Proud Owner At Last!

Yes it is 256L Starmist Black. I like the colour. As blacks go it is quite a light shade but should polish up very well. Colin said the previous bonnet was badly stone chipped and the last owner sold it to him with this one on it. It looks like the Champion colour (Boardeux Red?)

I wonder how many in this colour are left because if i'm honest I have seen very few of them - even years ago I don't recall seeing many - but maybe thats just me. Was metallic paint an optional extra does anyone know?

          Thanks

Here are a few more pictures. The first thing I did was replace the yellow screw caps on the rear number plate for black ones. Yellow caps through a letter are a no no ! lol

                    Hi Mark

Good to hear that the are a few GTE's in the region! I can't remember the last time I saw one in the Chester. The seems to be a few around Wrexham and Northwales though.

I think it is a genuine tow eye cover yes. Are these hard to come by?

The is exhaust will be staying as it is for now, are these in short supply to?

Ye they are finding them imposs to get hold of dude, the exhaust i mean, the tow eyes are quite hard to find aswell ye and people are cheeky with the money they want for them, but people have been making there own on here lol it looks just as good! Ye theres more GTEs popping up around here all the time, i have a theory, i think once one person in an area gets one and starts driving round other people see it and think wow whats that car, i want one!! As far as parts and advise is concerned this website is gold mate i wish id found it 7 years ago when i had my first GTE 8v

I like your theory although i'm quite happy to be the only GTE owner in Chester that I know of at least. The used to be plenty about but they have disapeared over the last few years. I always wanted a white one but black is my fav colour so am happy enough.

I can't wait to get cracking with it. I would like to see it on the road for late April. Am waiting for the salt to clear

I used to be a GTE owner from chester, untill i stupidly sold it after 6 years of ownership around 2 years ago. Mine was never out though as i only used it on dry weekends which were few and far between. What bodyshop will you be using??

I'm hoping you may be able to recommend one? I know the are plenty about but I don't want a half arsed job doing. I have friends that have all the gear but not sure the quality will be there. I'm keeping this one for a few years I think

                              Small Update:

Have removed most bits and bobs to remove the gearbox today. The weather was terrible and did not help matters. The box makes on hell of a noise so its past its best. I will also replace the clutch as the release bearing is rattling its head off. Only glitch was I snapped on the the ARB stabilisers. No suprise as it was very rusty so will wack a pair of them on and some ball joints. The gear box looks very very oily and am quite sure its leaking from somewhere, the seems to be alot of oil underneath!

Found a few bits of rust in the bay that will need sorting to, forgot to take pics but will sort some in the week!

I have a few questions if anyone could help?

What size is the allen key bolt to gain access to the clutch imput shaft?

Should I keep the F16 Box and get it re furbed or just get an F20? Are the ratios different etc...?

Any ideas on the source of the oil?, I know the sump gasket is buggered but it looks like this is coming from elsewhere? When I removed the cover plate the was a constant drip trickling out...

                              Thanks
