  • what ive been doing today(lots of pics)

ummmm, i took me engine out to rebuild it lmao

not been happy with the amout of oil the engine has been using latley, so ive taken the bottom end out to rebuild it, still went as good asalways but was more of an annoyance more than anything, so over the past few weeks if been bying stuff to rebuild it.

started off going well untill i removed a fuel pipe and it was sorta stuk, i gave it a hrad tug and it came free, great i thought then i looked at the raill, the end snapped off, bugger

quick call around and i have a new rail comming tomorrow, not a good start but never mind, anyway, continuied to remove the head and bottom end

    head on the bench

    engineless engine bay

    new. freshly bored block

rods and pistons just removed from the old block

after the pistons and road were cleaned up they were refitted with new Sputter bearings

sptuers on the right, normal on the left

after the were all fitted i cheacked for the true TEC and marks up the flywhell end of the pully so you have 2 reference points to check

bottom wnd almost all complete, just needs the sump fitting to be done.

heres how its left, with the head studs wound home and backing plate all fitted.

should hopefully be all back together tommorw and fitted back in if i can be assed, if not will be fitted on saturday.

Nice one Jamie. I'd love to do this, it'll mean you'll know the exact in and outs of what provides your car with power! Keep up the good work, feel sorry for you in this weather, then again I'd rather be doing what your doing than what I am.

              Hello James!

              Good work there!!

Can you measure to me how many mm the inlet valve cutouts are deeper in SBD pistons at TDC?
And about Sptuers bearings, whats the advantage? Is more hard material?

              Cheers,

Re: what ive been doing today(lots of pics)

if you mean how deep are the cutouts, thery are 2.5mm, i think, and sputter bearings are electro plated so they are more hard wearing than normal ones but are twice the price.

                  Update!!

asket finaly arrived this morning, but had to go and help me old man fit a boiler, but when i got bck i got cracking on the engine.
sump fitted with baffled plate and the headgasket in place.

nice 1.2mm cometic gasket, this will raise the CR to around 11.6/7:1

just a bit of random info, ARP stud washers are thinner than GM bolt washers, so if you have troublle with the studs not tightening, use thicker washers

after the head was fitted i refitted the cleaned out lifters the started on the cam timing, 2.77mm@TDC for the inlet and 2.56mm@tdc for the exhaust

then it was just a matter of fitting the cam cover and a few last minute bits and bobs

and thats all i can do today as i cba to refit it at night, so will be going back in tomorrow with an AP padle clutch.

Re: what ive been doing today(lots of pics)

well its in and it runs , but had a few hicups with the clutch, i fitted the AP padle clutch, but upon fitting of the engine it poped the input shaft out as it turned out it had no circlip or retaing nut on it so i spend 2 hours faffing around with that, eventuall got it all back in with the help of MattJ and Astra Dan, and about an hour ago it started up again, runs a bit lumpy due to the timing of the cams and i need to adjust the map a bit to suit, but shall be taking its first few miles tomorrow and the joyus task of running in again, anyway a few pics.
here the enigne in place witha few things left to do

the clutch plate that isnt in at the mo, refitted the old one, which is fine and loads of life left in, just thought it firt the padle as its been sat in the dining room for 3 months, but ill refit it in a few weeks.

and the input shaft minus the circlip and retaing nut, the bolt that in it there is just one i used to withdraw it from the box, and it pulled out with me fingers, so ive been driving around for 50k/2 years with not retaing clip, ahh well.

and heres the engine just after being run for the first time,

got a bit of grubby finger prints all over the place but it will all be cleaned up tomorrow.

                        Thanks for the informations Jamie!

About the bearings, did you placed special ones only for more security or you had problem with standard ones? Is it got much weared early?

How my rpm is your rev limiter? Do you use special valves springs?

And congratulations for your nice engine.. really pretty setup.

                        Cheers,
