  • Vectra V6 Brake Upgarde Complete...

    sorry for the crappy picture!!!

    finally completed my brake system overhaul. full spec now;

Vectra V6 front callipers (£30 local scrappy)
288mm front discs (£25 Astra Dan)
Braided hoses all round (£40 stt)
dot 5.1 fluid (£8.99 - Halfrauds non silicone based)
    Total Cost £140

total cost of the upgrade was about £140, with the spiggot rings to centre the discs on the hub coming in at a storming £25. But in terms of value for money this set up wont be beatenm the car stops on a 5pence now and the pedal is solid, theres so much feed back and no brake fade even braking down from over 120mph. I'm Delighted with them, I dont think it will be beaten on value for money either

thanks to those who helped fit them, Astrasteve23 and stt, and all the other on here for bits and advice:beer:

the discs are origionally 5 stud and have to be drilled for 4 stud, brett got them all ready drilled. the calipers fit straight on. the rear hoses were a bit of a mish, had to take the back box off to get to the n/s one. but the back box was bodged on anyway by a shite local company so we bodged their bodge so it lines up better and doesn't clunk on the rear beam hopfully.

I can confirm, V6 brakes do improve braking over std 16v set up. Go for the 288s unless you find some very cheap 284s like I did.

very nice! does it make much difference having 288mm discs from the 284's?

288s are noticably better than 284s.

I converted to 288s on my cav while I was waiting for the 308s.

Re: Vectra V6 Brake Upgarde Complete...

Mainly due to the larger piston diameter I would have thought.

think the 16v's callipers have a 52mm piston, the v6 ones have a 57mm, not sure about the turbo one, I assume same as a 16v calliper?

I'd whole heartedly recommend this, no brake fade yet, superb stopping power and its suprisingly hard to lock them up!

Cav V6/tub ones are 54mm, vec are 57mm

Re: Vectra V6 Brake Upgarde Complete...

                      Ah righty.
Essentially, calliper force to pedal force scales with the piston diameter squared whilst the pedal travel also increases in proportion to the diameter squared. So
54s over 52s give 8% more force and travel
57s over 52s give 20% more force and travel.

Then factor in the disc effective radius being about 124mm compared with 108 and that's another 15% gain in braking.

I've been reading that book someone recommended to me "race and kit car braking and suspension set up". Very interesting.

how much is it/how hard is it to get the discs drilled ?

Simon offered to drill some for me, in the end they turned up already done which I hadnt been expecting!

In theory I have 35% better brakes than before then, but that doesnt factor in the old naf fluid and warped brembos! no wounder they feel so good!

You need to drill three holes then file one out. Needs to be quite a coarse file. The holes are about 13mm, but don't need to be that exact as the wheel bolts just need to pass through the disc to the hub.
