Footwells are a good place to start ;)

Rip all the carpets up and have a look - I had a shock with mine..

ive looked all underneath and its solid,

is there any specific places i should be checking inside which cant be checked from outside??

A 55,000 mile motor for £65!? Thats amazing. I'm surprised (though glad that it hasn't) it didn't go for scrap at that price.

If the under side is solid bearing in mind the milage hopefully it'll be ok but as said - take up the carpets. It is certainly not uncommon for one or both of the footwells to get rather moist in times of rain.

Yeah it safe to jack on the wishbone mount, provided it's not rusted through into the footwell ;)

Looks pretty good really. It's quite common to see skin sills fitted over the top of the original ones, saves a bit of work for the bodger. those lower rear quarters are among the best I've seen for original ones, plus that rear arch is much better than average - the inner arch doesn't look at all rusty, which is a huge plus for the repair.

Ian T
11-09-2006, 11:44 PM
Good work, and you're not hanging abut either!

Looks like you're going to fit a skin sill, considering all the lovely clean metal I removed when I did mine, I think you're doing the right thing - aving yourself from the welds across internal corners etc, got to be easier.

Yes, definately plate up the stiffener - when mine looked like yours it was really flexible, but with a bit of 1mm steel plate, with a fold along the bottom, it became pretty much rock solid, and remember it should be welded to the sill along the bottom too - a pain to judge really but self tappers will hold it while you tack it. :)

anyone know how to adjust your doors??? to get the gap right

thanks

I found when the sill was cut out the car sagged a little in the middle.

I spread the load with a block off wood and jacked on the floor until the door shut nice. Then the sill was welded into place.

There isnt any adjustment in the hinges. A little adjustment can be got by bending the hinges with strategically placed blocks of wood and shutting the door against them.

As for the seams , I hope you haven't done the same as me and warped the full panel by being to ****y and seam welding the full repair. I didn't notice until i got around to cataloying :hissyfit:

BrightSpark
30-09-2006, 09:58 PM
arrr great 1 door is really ****ed compared to the other, i dont think anything has warped as such, the doors werent right when we got it :(

can u adjust the catch so it sits flush?

thanks

Ian T
01-10-2006, 01:56 AM
There's a bit of give in everything.

It's possible to bend the door frame at the hinge end simply by lifting the rear edge of the door (or putting weight on it) when it's almost in the closed position. If the door is sitting too far in or out you can adjust the locking pin, which gets you some extra range (note this will also lift dropped doors as they close to maintain alignment.)

Hope this helps,

Ian.

I never realised you and your old man were going this far with it- you should have said I could have been a great help- used to be a panel beater at Lookers many moons ago!

Erm, very possibly, does he drive a green mk3 with tinted windows? If so I know him cos he working in the car spares man(scrappy on cleveland street). Seems alright but he scratched one of the alloys on my cav trying to fit a tyre for me once. These thing happen though! decent enough lad:)

Looks to be coming on nicely that.

one way to make the filler easier inside the door shuts is to carry on so that it ends on the rounded section, rather than trying to sand it back into the flatter area - it's easier to get the flat join around the corner for some reason, and then there aren't any visible bulges.

and .. i found the reason why some floorwells are rusty ...if you look under the drivers wheelarch the radio aerial lead comes in the inner bit through a grommet ...if a repairer (!) or someone didnt replace it ..then when it rains water comes down the inner channels under the wing and runs along the wire through the hole and soaks the carpet. so the carpet stays wet ...forever ...and rusts from the inside ..

becuase I want to make my GTE 100% original and that is the correct model (Philips 681 I think).

When you say get a new stereo do you mean an all singin all dancing thing, or, say, a swap for a single slot CD player? ;)

also, tried to start her but she was having none of it, gave what i think was the ICV a clean and it was still the same hmmm had a poke around and noticed a huge split around the induction pipe from the AFM to the throttle body.
bit of superglue and gaffa tape and wiz bang she works...... in a fashion

so thats another thing on the long list of things to-do

CavHopper
24-10-2006, 08:41 PM
I had that same pipe split on mine- ran like shite and kept stalling:(

Finding another was a bit of a task, but I found one that wasn't split on a GTE in the scrappy in the end.

Good progress again- you are putting me and my Astra to shame matey!!!

ye that was with endsleigh,

its IG 11.... and because im 17 its ridiculous

most insurers wont insure me at all,

i can get a good price with liverpool victoria, its alot cheaper than others but i cant insure anything over a IG 8

What you need is a Nova ;)

I had 3, and they are great little cars- and there are still bargains to be had, especially if you just want a runabout for a year while you tart up the Astra.

As long as you dont mind welding a few plates here and there!

Christmas over ..so a quick update being a nice dry warmish day I decided to flush the weld on the drives sill and give it a coat of filler it was looking a bit rusty (surface)

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f271/mactheweld/DSCN2791.jpg

Also need opinions on what to do paint wise with the astra .

The plan was to keep it the original colour but I bought a bag of metal flake to try out and had a quick go on the rear spoiler . I think it looks "ok" but the whole car I dont know ?

a quick coat of original base colour (no laquer)

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f271/mactheweld/DSCN2797.jpg

and a small amount of flake with lacquer

What's the story here?!!

run into the back of someone front.. bent drivers chassis leg, has been pushed back also needs slam panel bonnet wing radiator headlights bumper .

I have searched everywhere to see if the front chassis leg can be bought but no luck,(if I could get one I would rebuild it ) but as it stands it will have to go :hissyfit:

hoping to sell it in 1 piece (minus alloys ) would need a trailer though

genuine 55k 1800 engine and box with s/h
new arches
gte kit (5 door)
new front suspension inserts
new shocks
new brake pipes
loads of other stuff (really top class interior)
If it never sees the road again there are plenty of new parts less than 9 months old on it

anything close to £170 ???
