to bring up to date.....

From humble beginnings here it is a bog standard H reg astra GTE 2.0 8v bought in late november 2003. I originaly bought the car as scrap/ an engine donor but on further inspection it was a good car . I bought it from FAB BMW storage place in Cinderford, they had it for about a year in storage so no tax or Mot, (wish i had pics now but i didnt know i was gonna keep it) looked a sorry state dust all over it, they got it going (the battery was flat), got home the battery was dead and needed replacing for a start.. looking through the glove box i found all the original manuals and the original service book, the damn thing had FSH, unusual for this type of car.
I took it down the garage an after a full check over, he said its a damn good car needs little work, no rust on body underneath or in sills etc, small amount to rear arches but could be rubbed down/ no filler or welding ... so on with the repair.. 1st was the battery and also he found the steering rack was leaking but he said he had one in a gte that had been stripped out the front. i checked it over and asked how much he wanted, his reply 'dont worry about it' .. so with a free steering rack all it cost me inc fitting and battery was 55 quid..

So on to MOT. The mot station guy said it was a good one most are ready for scrap, it failed on an incorrectly adjusted headlamp, front top strut mount and the two front tyres, the strut mount was 50 quid fitted and two toyo proxie tyres were fitted and the tracking done for good measure.
So the car was finally ready for the road.. but the car was completely standard apart from a couple of things: twin exhaust, a bee sting ariel single wiper and some oval side repeaters. So first thing was to sort out the handling. To keep costs down i sourced some strut braces off mig web second hand, both front an rear, cost me around 30 quid for the both of them. This didnt make a great deal of difference as the car still steered like a boat. after looking through demon tweeks etc spax suspension kits were dear, around 400 pounds which was no good, i found a guy after much looking on the internet who decided he didnt like the feel of his 400 pound spax adjustable PSX suspension kit, so i stole them for 60 quid and my mate charged 45 quid to fit. bargin!.
Next came the K&n induction kit this was taken from my previous car, i gave it a service for a tenner and it was like new.. easy. it was all going well on the outside but the inside had no speakers or radio, the best i could afford was a JVC cd player and i bought Alpine 6x9 etc for speakers, which wasent the best setup but its good enough for now.
After getting bored of the outside i decided on some Crystal lights to go on, these were 125 pounds. they were not quite right for the car i think......(pics to follow).

and the most important thing i bought the v.rare irmscher bodykit (bit of 80's style)

Have yet to fit but the brochure shows it well... consists of front rear bumper and side skirts.. should look nice when the cars all bodycoloured up. Plan is to paint the whole car v. soon, keeping the original blue i think ( i was tempted to paint it ford imperial blue) but i think original is the way to go... overall im looking for a smooth but still 80's appearance hence the Irmscher Kit, hopefully this will happen in the next few months.. then i will start on the interior... pretty unsure what to do with it at the moment its the beige 16v interior and it is mint, but i think i'll be changing it for the black dash etc and get some nicer aftermarket seats in there..

Cool, I wish I'd seen that Spax kit, thats more than a steal, it's daylight robbery! :p
Here are some clearer pix of the Irmscher Kit I found:

And what the Mk2 convertible would of looked like:

I found a slightly different Irmsher kit in a local scrappie and had the lot for £30 It was heavily damaged but My sisters boyfriend at the time was a panal beater, he had the front and rear bumpers and I kept the sideskirts, IMHO the Skirts are the nicest you can get for the Mk2

You got an absolute stunner for the money really, Keep it rust free by drowning the chassis in Waxoil and underseal the rest, it may take a week now but you'll reap the rewards in the long run!!! :)

Update:

did have a calibra 16v for an engine conversion but The calibra was stiripped down and scrapped, as it was making an easy job difficult, but it did leave me with a shed load of spares, which is useful, and i made near all the money back on the parts (lucky).. and in comes the new donor... a poor old astra gte 16v.. its a rot box but the engine seems very good, and has not long been serviced according to the service sticker on the window screen... i hope to recondition it a bit at a much later date but it goes like fck, runs and idles fine... the fact that its an astra and not a calibra means the wiring is easier the ecu is the right shape, all the pipe work and hopefully exhaust can be put straight on to mine quality.. also gonna have the alloys, which will look better on mine as mine is a lot lower ...

Irmscher do some nice stuff

Hope that the category mine will fall into... still unsure of the colour... does anyone think the ford Imperial blue will suit a mk2 astra with an 80s bodykit like that.. i have my doubts.... or should i just stick with the met. blue it was born with???

its on the second month now  , all theyre doing is removing the engine/ box and loom from the 8v, spraying the entire engine bay 'Ford Imperial blue' fitting the 16v running gear and plastic welding my irmscher front bumper where it broke... i wanted to get the full respray before christmas but it doesnt look like thats going to happen.. i was going to save my original wheel arches on the back as they are in very good shape and completely original, but ive decided a better finish would be just to replace them but thats the only part that needs work, rest of the car is rust free :) i was lucky finding this car..
