View Full Version : Champion Turbo
I was just gonna run this car for the summer then sell it on....but I can't :)
first job was to ditch the van intercooler that was on it and fit the one I bought off ebay for the other abandoned project
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/bartrum/P1010076.jpg
the difference was amazing the car was strong before but now it's just mental (my first let'd mk2, go easy on me:)) the old intercooler was leaking boost thru a split hose. Was fairly easy to fit, using some ally pipe and a few bits Valver gave me and some more silcone hoses from Hose Direct near me. only bit i'm not too sure about is where the power steering pulley is, I had to go under it to get round it (the red hose in the pic)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/bartrum/P1010078.jpg
it's no lower than the exhaust but i've just got to be careful not to catch it...and I can only go one way out of my street :(
there's a bordeux red gte in sheffield that's on ebay at the mo, just waiting for him to get back to me about the bootlid and front bumper but not heard owt back yet
It's gonna get a quick tidy up for the summer then come winter time it's gonna get a proper seeing to ;)
Looks good Baz. :applause:
Forgive me if i missed something Baz but that is Si's old one isnt it ?

Looks alot cleaner with the smaller intercooler. You going to grill the fog light holes?

Nice one Baz, tinkering already :)
Nice one Baz, tinkering already :)
I lasted all of 10 minutes before it was in bits :)
Looks a little lost without something in the top centre section of the bumper, will look a lot better with a new front bumper, especially if its an 8v so you can lose those fog holes.
Not surprised about how much better it runs with the new I/C on, must have been leaking a hell of a lot of boost through the split piping. I remember how facking fast it was before the split, so know just how much fun you are having :)
Glad to hear you are keeping it now too, should be looking the absolute nuts after this winter then
Edit: Dont forget to PM me your address for the extra alarm fob etc. Also, let me know if you can look at that mk2 for me

Top job. :applause:
more spending this time on new tyres, went for Toyo proxes T1-R's again, Yoko's were slightly cheaper but don't last nearly as long imo
they cost nearly as much as the tyres for me 17's tho :hissyfit:
my new purchase :)

only been used for about 4k. £100 plus a set of V6 disc's and calipers I had spare in px

Bargain. Are they for another car and have an adaptor plate?
Bargain. Are they for another car and have an adaptor plate?
they started life on a zetec turbo'd escrote, will probly need new adaptor plates. not tried them anywere near the car yet might as well wait for the winter rebuild

OK cheers, just trying to get my head round how the adaptor plates work without changing the offset. Just curious as maybe you could pick up eg scooby 4-pots cheap and make an adaptor plate.
Good stuff Baz, really do need good brakes with LET power lol
Glad Ive got 4 pots on mine :)
the brakes on it are fine but these were too good to miss out on plus 4 pots look the dogs danglies
been out tonight and it's started misfiring but only under load, if you accelerate steady it's fine but if you nail it it misfires like a biatch. gonna replace the rotor arm and dizzy cap tommorrow see if that helps.
it started when I tested it up against a 300bhp scooby on the way home, nothing in it even with the misfire. one surprised subaru owner plus one of my mates got the arse on cos I overtook his skyline GTS-T :D
should have got a let'd mk2 years ago, you don't realise what your missing out on. one day i'll grow up...but not yet ;)

And ignition coil. Breaking down under load is just the symptom.

I just happen to have one in my "you never know" box. bought a new dizzy cap and rotor arm arm on my halfrauds trade card, should have cost £27 got it for £13 :)
problem solved
found this the other day as well

obviously the frontera intercooler and charge-cooler's history but wonder if it's still got the superchip. not to keen on taking the ecu to bits tho to find out.

Say Hi to my old Astra for me lol
almost went up in smoke yesterday. I set off out for a play and it cut out at the top of the street then started up again on it's own but without any of the dash lights on. took it straight home checked around found a fuse had popped, chaged it and tried again. this time it did it again but a load of smoke came out of the dash
back home again pulled the fuse box down and found it was were the turbo timer was wired into it. there was also an old alarm control box was still up there with a load of wirering. ripped all that out and the car was back to it's normal self
order a set of EDS phase 2 chips as well, seeing as it's already got the 3.5 fpr and a bigger intercooler fitted it'd be rude not to :)
Fcuking hell Baz. Thank god you sorted that out, that is acctually scary.
Did you find out wether the chips in it were standard or no? Im pretty sure they were. Will be even more of a beasty with those phase 2 chips fitted! Now, where did I put that spare alarm key fob ... :)
Seriously, I hate having this alarm fob here if it were to get stolen I would instantly feel the culprit! Send me ya address in PM plz matey.
gave the rims a mini refurb
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/bartrum/Photo0049.jpg
ordered a pair of CV joints from Autovaux be doing them saturday ready for the drive to TOTB sunday, last year this happened on the way...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/bartrum/whoopsie.jpg
...been in that paticular ditch meself, not planning on a return
CV joints done now got to replace the OS bottom ball joint as it's well and truely goosed
new exhaust time, the janspeed that was on it wasn't doing it any favours being only 2 inch bore. took it to Custom Pipes Doncaster for a full 2.5 inch stainless with a 4 inch outwardly rolled pipe

the build quality's as good, if not better, than the Piper system on the other car and a million times better than the shat powerflow exhaust's

MMM i like the exhaust, im generally not a fan of larger pipes but id have that.
I was looking at a mugen system for the civic type r ...a snip sir at 740 quid!
the down pipe is in good condition so wasn't needed
2.5 all the way thru and 1 middle box then the back box, has a pleasant growl to it now

it's not that big on the car tbh, specially when you compare it to the daft 6 inch and upwards back boxes you get on tat like saxos and corsa's.

I watched em build it up from scratch, pretty impressive stuff. the bloke that did it has been doing it 10 tears so he made it look easy. should have cost more but it's not what you know... ;)
the car definately feels more responsive, now just waiting on those EDS phase 2 chips
had a run up to York Dragway to see how quick it is before I start playing.
best time of the day = 13.9 @ 100mph
i guessed it'd be good for low 14's didn't think it'd creep into the 13's tho especially on a crap strip like york :D can't wait to take it to Santa Pod now

very respectable time:grinning-smiley-043
300bhp should be about 13.4 which is what my mate got at santa pod
now running EDS 3.5...
...jesus titty f*cking christ
couple of little niggles to sort out, need some colder plugs and i'm gonna uprate the fuel pump just to be safe
fitted a new lower arm and got the tracking done. managed to snap both the alternator and power steering belt saturday night, good old halfrauds trade card came in useful again
now just about ready for next months trackday, think i'm gonna have to get some 15's tho, don't fancy replacing 16's every time i go on a trackday at £240 a go :(
got these today, should be good for a few more tenths :doggy:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/bartrum/P1010126.jpg
at £30, including the rims, I couldn't resist. give them a quick paint to match the 16's
new PB
13.4 @ 105
ran on the slicks but tbh they didn't make any difference to the 60ft time, still 2.3 seconds. if owt i'd have thought that would have improved slightly

Nice time.
It still pi$$es me off that I can only get a 13.4 with a 114mph terminal.
I should be in the 12's :banghead:
what 60 foot times are you doing kev?
traction in 1st and 2nd in mine is crap, it's not till 3rd gear that I can get the power down :(

did you drop the pressure in the tyres to about 18 psi
dropped the tyre pressure, didn't have a guage tho so just guessed. reacon I could get better times at santa pod than york, that place needs some money spending on it the whole place is a bit of a dump tbh :(

both sites do need money putting in tho.
swapped the wheels over

sunday night couldn't get the car in 1st then 1st was ok and 2nd wouldn't go in, found out the rear gearbox mount was twisted causing the linkage not to line up properly. managed to get a rear bracket courtesy of a daewoo nexia (as vauxhall don't do them anymore) and ready to start modifying it to mate up to the F28 to find all but one of the bolt holes have been smashed off the gearbox casing :furious3:
got to get a plate made up and welded on to the bracket to bolt on where the transfer box would've gone and hope it takes the abuse it's gonna get on saturday at elvington

nice havnt come across that one before!!!
only needs to be a tempary fix as the car comes off the road at the end of the month and a freshly rebuilt F28's waiting to go in. i'll get some pics of the bracket when I get it back, my mates taking it in to work tomorrow to get it made up for me

Exsactly the same thing happend to mine! But the whole thing snapped off.
I had the gearbox welded up and that lasted about two hours!!!
Now I have two bits of angle iron bolted to various parts of the gearbox and welded to the original mount.
it was flying when it happened as well, i'd just blitzed my mates skyline off the lights then lots of crunching of missed cogs :o
got the bracket back. the right one is the old one, it looks like the plate that spans it was too short to give it enough strength were it bends and were most of the load will be under heavy acceleration
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/bartrum/turbo001.jpg
this pic shows were it split
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/bartrum/turbo002.jpg
given it a coat of hammerite and get it fitted tonight and try not to bust owt else before saturday

13-09-2006, 08:07 PM
nice job baz
there was too much damage to the gearbox casing to refit the braket, alll the holes were goosed
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/bartrum/goosedbox002.jpg
there's a good casing at the local gearbox place so that's going to be swapped over next week then get it ready for croft on the 1st. it's sat on the drive in bits at the moment

17-09-2006, 09:37 AM
That looks identical to what happend to mine!
What ever you do dont have it ally welded back up! mine lasted about 10 minutes!! I made brackets to use about 10 of the other threaded holes on other parts of the gearbox.
Change of plan (again  ) the shell is fairly solid but too much needs doing to it for me to feel comfortable having a 250+bhp engine in it so it's gonna be de-letted & re-xe'd. been looking at the condition of the shell, it's going to need 2 sills, some patching in the nearside wheel arch and a couple of bits in the engine bay all stuff that can be done when the engine & box are out of the way. As for the paint, the roof and tailgate are gonna be painted and the replacement front bumper came yesterday courtesy of ebay then it'll be going up for sale
astrayorkie

aaarrrhhh.. good man was wondering what you were up to:thumbsup:
are you going to make the chassie stronger while thw engine is out?as they tend to pull themselves apart with high powered lets.
that's the plan, gonna get the xe out of that one and get the engine bay strengthened and tidied up. the hard bit is gonna be converting this one back to an xe, i'm going to take my time and make it mint again :D the interior is in pretty good condition, one small rip on the drivers seat (that you can hardly see anyway) all it needs is a bit of tlc and it'll be ready for a new owner.
having 2 cars is good but i've only got one arse to sit in em
micky taylor
21-09-2006, 11:03 PM
baz out of those two gearbox mounts you made up, are any of them spare??? think iv just done mine!!
got one from a scrapper for £5 from a daewoo nexia. exactly the same a 16v one
micky taylor
21-09-2006, 11:23 PM
nice....and then welded the plate on, were abouts does the plate bolt up
there's a couple of holes to bolt it to on the back of the box where the calibra/cav mount would've been

just checked and its the rubber mount thats gone on mine not the big metal one!!!
just checked and its the rubber mount thats gone on mine not the big metal one!!!
you're not making enough power then :p wish thats all that had gone on mine, you'll be back on the road then by now
now de-let'd
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/bartrum/deletd001.jpg
checked in the engine bay, the only bits of rust are behind the headlights the rest is solid
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/bartrum/deletd002.jpg
only bits left to remove are the exhaust and front brakes. the engines going to get a quick tidy up then should be going in the other champ sometime this week
