A few pics to wet ones appetite below and of course when i get stuck in more pics etc etc you know the routine

My Let that was setup for a spare F20 but got a F28 now :)

Hiya Tom :)

Well operation cabby v6 conversion was halted due to some prat of a previous owner cutting off the rubber drain pipe that should come out front of the sills, They not only cut them off they were pushed up and holes were sealed over, So the actual sill interiors were like coffins filled with water hence the cabby strengtheners were rusted real bad
Cut my losses and mother treated me to a 2nd cabby :) (what a mom lol) so seeing as this is ok bar 2 small rips on rear corners of the hood it makes more sense to do the whole valver and do v6 cabby later when i get (well erm moms treating me again to a whole brand new electric hood from germany :) ) hood and lots better weather

Batteries died on me or i would of posted valver pics today but will snap some tomorrow

Just got back from bro-in-laws (bearing up quite well after my sister dumped him after 26yrs of marriage) and his bro is down friday til sunday from scotland so operation valver strip-down commences monday morning

Suspension is deffo coilovers on front
If i can the same on rear
Shell painted in/out prolly inside and leave outer til nephew can get me into his works compound where i can have it for the weekend to do the 2k finish

Headliner i want my fiancee to retrim with some s****y material
Dash will stay same ole gte type as i love em
Carpet will be vax'd etc
New ali pedals n tax disc holder
Back to full rainbow interior for now n scrap slippy front cav leather seats
Ohh additional pod with boost/oil temp etc i thinks somewhere
Underside a couple of jacking bends to be knocked out then cleaned/resealed/painted
Bay either silver/white or matching colour of exterior (fiancee loves the champ colour)
Engine gearbox painted and silicone tubes where i can (to get)
New larger oil cooler (to get)
New frontera 2.8 IC (to get)

If i can afford after paints/sundries any other tools i need i would like a quaife but may have to wait unless i borrow some dosh off mother lol

Turbo front struts/discs etc if i can afford etc

And lastly i think will be the jetex s/steel setup (bought by the piece to suit)

Loads i prolly missed but it will be a while in the making and hopefully last for many a year to come

Ohh got some equal shafts in garage so they're going on

Just gonna take my time and get every bit of rust etc sorted and go from there

Cheers

Hiya's,
Everything's in place for commencing work on monday coming (24th april)

One problemo or rather hopefully not .............

Have i got anything to worry about concerning my immob/alarm system ??

eg: Wiring needing changing etc or with the let engine loom piece will it be like for like so to speak ??

Just a last minute panic as i'm working out or trying to work out a detailed method for all the work involved

Well back to work

Cheers

You shouldn't have to touch or go anywhere near the alarm/immobiliser wiring as the engine loom is a stand alone item, your alarm/immobiliser should be installed to the main car loom.

Hiya,
Cool, Was worrying a bit as it was already pro-installed etc and have the install certificate/receipt etc so didn't want to have to mess with it

Ohh it can annoy me now n again, Yesterday i went to confirm old cabby shell collection and had a game arming it, Got back to car and it wouldn't dissarm lol, Felt a right wally having to climb through hatch to lift doorpin up lol

But i know this is caused by masts etc and the shielding being an old version can sometimes cause hastle (if i have a game getting it to work i think how the little oiks near me would have trouble getting her going lol)

Cheers Valver :)

Hiya's,
Had a stroke of luck today :)

Brother was a welder, When he moved back over this area he took a welding job but the pay was way less than his previous job
After jacking it in he now works at a quarry

Anyways he was off today ill, He lodges at our bro-in-laws (bear with me this post is relevant to the stripdown ;) )

I got chatting to him about a rotisserie idea, With him being a welder for ages i showed him my plans etc and he said easy enough to make etc

So i have almost completed the front part of a rotisserie :)

So today i just took off the driveshafts and took suspension units off whole

Cracked on with rotisserie so lumps coming out tomorrow morning and after i want to finish the rota :D

Not much of an update but bro-in-law is letting me use the rota on the drive he he

Will post pic update tomorrow

But now with work area sorted i will upload pics and from thursday onwards will keep a more refined posting with work diary/pics

Pics were damage found when wings were took off and a quick pull at the sideskirts :(

Cannot believe this but whoever did the sills before hadn't even primed them before seam sealing them on !!!!!!!!

Knowing this i can appreciate why the clearcoat's peeled, Prolly used the cheapest clearcoat known to man with no regard to longevity of paint work

Well next installment should be this coming thursday

it's always a sickner when stripping stuff down to find more problems! keep up the good work though!

are you gona spray the engine bay whilst the engines out?

Defiance
09-05-2006, 11:30 PM
Hiya,
At the moment the valver lump is in the boot
Pas/linkages to struts are on and the bay is empty bar matrix pipes clutch cable acc cable and wiring is tied up ready for towing

Like a divvy as i stuck pas back on i never lined the interior spline to steering column lol

So in the morning i will redo pas so steerings working ready for nephew to steer her as i tow-bar her to the farm

M8 i am gonna spray every damn mm of the bitttcccchhhhhhhh :D

I have 2/3rds finished rotisserie, Depending on what i am allowed to do while cars on the area at the farm i want to grit/bead blast the whole shell while i can rotate it

If this is not allowed i will have to scrape/wire brush attachment/hand brush all i can then set to welding new sills etc

She seems fairly happy to let me get on with what i want to do but done some prints/pics to explain to her how i want to do a real classy and long lasting job on the car

Ohh i have volunteered myself to do a bit of work on her morris minor !!!
Some bodywork and prolly some electrics to get it going decent

Thing is i have no idea about morris minors lmao

But www should help me I Hope lol

Anyways after shells done eg: weldings done and shell is solid and blasted or cleaned etc i will be copiously spraying the hell out of it and using seam sealer/wax/anti-chip etc as if it's going out of fashion :D

Where she's letting me do the work is ideal, It's a massive solid concrete base 1/4 size of a football pitch lol, I can't see her worrying about what i do really as she does a sideline in paint dipping/stripping so chemicals are used there so what's a bit of grit/bead blasting ! lol

She went to the same school as me so we kind of know each other from schooldays

Nice she seems to know something of gte's too !!!! knew about the digidash so maybe able to convert her from morris to vaux lmao

Know for sure tomorrow what i will be allowed to do but in my mind the worst (if you can say that) is welding and she's fine with that (if you've ever worked/been on farms you would know a welder is always to be had for mending stuff lol

Well off to dream of a dull looking blasted bare shell ;)

Have Fun

Ciao

EDITED : Anything goes concerning the car :)
Any tools i want to use i can, So last thing will be 2k spray job which by my time schedule should time with a barn/enclosure being empty for me to use :)

Hiya's,
Had to make a decission earlier after finding rust rot along the interior of the inner wheel arch where they meet the shell (over/around the curve)

I figure with new front wings + inner sills (i have new outer ones) + inner wheel arches + other assorted bits it's time to call it a day and cut my losses :(

Not too bad though as the 8v mk2 i have stored in a garage is fine in these areas, May need a rear wheel arch panel on the n/s but that's at worst (ohh and the dreaded poly bush wishbone bolt hole oval syndrome needed to be cured)

With time constraints on usage of plot i've rented i couldn't fully do what i wanted to do in the time i've been given

Anyways i am fully gutting the valver shell in readiness for scrapman and hopefully workout how to remove my sigma setup to use on 8v shell

Will keep this post open for new shell to let but will obviously ammend any future typing/pics to new shell

Here's a few pics of 8v shell i will be using, The interior is brilliant only got sun-fading on top edges of rear seats but have a mint dark rainbow set sourced

Few assorted pics from a few days ago

As it is now all's i got left to remove is the centre air structure (for want of a better name) and what ever the thing/wiring is that goes beneath the ecu area

Hiya Valver,
Done a last grasp post in wanted section for a valver shell lol

Do you think it's worth my while doing the damage to inner/outer rear araches ???????????

Also where the front jacking points are (poxy gm ones i mean) these areas of sill are crunched up (i have new outer sills but would have to buy inner ones i guess if they exist) and sort minor rust spots on rear floorpan etc

If i can avoid it i would like to have a valver shell for my let/f28 etc to go in obviously
Hate to see another (what's been my 1st gte and a great powered car) go to the metal butchers beeing so early after having to scrap my 1st cabby :(

Just clutching at straws and hope i guess lmao

Cheers

Personally I would repair the shell you have, better the devil you know, as with most mk2 these days, solid ones are getting harder to find and at least that way you know it's done, my advice to you would be to do the inner arch and replace the rear quarter as believe it or not it is easier and a lot less filler is needed, not only that it comes with the rear section of sill, which has probably gone along with the inner strengthening piece! You could get hold of another one and it be the same, if you've already got it stripped then you're halfway there.

There is pics in my diary thread showing the relevent panels!! :)

Hiya Valver,
OK i am going to sort this shell

As the rear outer wing panels have been replaced i think i best go for 2 new rear quarters

Now this is what i think i need besides front wings ........

2 INNER SILLS L+R (i have new outer ones but inners are really mangled due to the car sometime being jacked up on these points)

2 REAR WING 2 DOOR HATCH L+R

2 INNER REAR WHEEL ARCH L+R

Also but i don't know correct terminology for them ............

As you remove bumper and look at rear corners that are hidden by the bumper i need both sides as these are rust holed, Any ideas of name ???

Basicly shell needs these (in my terminology)
Front wings + Rear quarters + inner rear arches + inner sills + rear lower corners

Other minor plating i can use some sheet i've previously used

These panels i can order from Beevers auto panels

Think that about covers what i will have to order

Any ideas with looking on beevers site what the rear corner parts are called ??
If you or anybody know i will order them in a bit and sort delivery etc

Hope above makes sense

Many Thanks

The bottom rear corners will be part of the rear quarters if you're getting the full quarter. I used hadrian panels for all my parts www.perfectpanels.co.uk should tell you the nearest stockis, but sounds like you sorted in that respect, what you might find when you cut the quarter off, in the sill section, there is a strengthening piece that rot's, this is merely a lipped plating job

Hiya Valver,
Cheers for quick reply :)

Could you give me your opinion on these .........

They are the quarters from beevers ...... http://bap.dominohosting.biz/bap/bapdb01.nsf/Plookup2/62-04-501VAUXHALLASTRA10-84-10-91!EditDocument&Ret=ALL

Thing is i've tried all the stockist near me for Hadrian panels and they don't do them anymore
So ones further from me would be a pain getting there and bringing them back, So i've found beevers (used sel imperial before but they don't have a great online selection) have all i need and delivery isn't too bad etc

But if those quarters aren't as complete as hadrians i could try hadrian suppliers further afield

What you think ???

Many Thanks

It's the same diagram as the hadrian stuff and looks to be the same panel, but at half the price, think I paid £99+ vat for mine, so a good price, i've not come across sel imperial before, always used hadrian, but i think a few people on here have and i don't recall any bad comments.
This panel will basically join to the lip of the rear valance, if the plate behind this has gone, then it's just a matter of making a plate to suit.
Get youself a spot weld drill bit tho as you'll need one!!

Hiya Again Valver,
I got sel outer sills and they seem fine (were for scrapped cabby but now will do for valver)
Seem ok to the feel and are nicely coated in that black primer stuff

Anyways gonna order now and also get a couple of spot weld drill bits (don't buy them from machine mart mine wore down after 5 welds lol)

Think Chronos engineering do good spot weld bits (used to use them for engineering bits)

Many Thanks Valver for your help :)

Ordering now and will check your thread

Thanks Again

Hiya Valver,
Can weld (not learned tig yet though) so welding doesn't phase me
Just worried about the time span of renting the work area on top of paying for garages that at best are used for storage lol

Anyways ordering done and awaiting an email/call so hopefully won't be many days waiting

Gonna go over to farm now and get some stuff under cover etc

Will continue thread with all the gore of panel removal/fitting etc

Many Thanks you've helped me loads

Also was slightly shocked in a happy way ............

Front Wings/Inner Sills/Rear Quarters/Rear Inner Wheel Arches £240.19 delivered and they are All Hadrian he he

Ohh well living room looks like another car parts area but luckily fiancee allows my indulgence with the car/s lol

Gotta wait til weather dries up as i will be sandblasting :D

Will post etc when i get chance

Good job belinda's understanding lol
Damn rear quarters and wings are still in the living room he he

Well ........... Had a few hrs taking the foam front of dash interior and foot area out carefully earlier
Damn floor sponge stuff as acted as a brilliant sponge and absorbed all the years of wet shoes etc and rusted the footwells grrrrrrrr

So gonna order new footwells

Exhaust/rear beam/tank/front suspension left to take off allbeing well tomorrow

Then on a rottisserie it will go :)

Got sandblaster almost setup

So all's i need is dry weather (roflmao) which i doubt i will get :(

Can't wait to start attacking the shell with media and see a totally bare skeleton :D

Hiya's,
After trying to rotate the shell with a rotisserie i ended up blocking the shell for safety reasons (an upright shell sure blows in even a mild wind :( )

Anyways these pics are from the underside (no piping etc left on it now as i took these pics to aid the rebuild so i knew which holes/fasteners etc i could weld-up/remove)

Gritblasting the underside will start tomorrow with the view to remove crud/paint etc from joins etc so i can stitch weld/patch etc

Hiya Kris,
I made one ;)

And i use a large continual 14cfm compressor (which works fine for my needs)

The only down-side with my setup is i have to phaff around with nozzles as they wear fast lol

I used a butane bottle instead of spending on any container material, Cut a letterbox sized hole in her to fit fittings then welded plate back up etc

Here's a link to a plan that explains etc

Well hope that helps

Hiya's,
Getting most of orig rear quarter panel off in readiness for new one (both being done) also outer sill and inner sill

Gritblast tomorrow and cut/make good sill/quarter area then offer up and cut last of the quarter area (hopefully !!! )

Also made a decision to cut out the front wheel arch rear area lower part where it had been patched thus allowing me to remove/replace any rusted part/area so inside can be sealed etc then sill welded on and then copious loads of waxoyl dripped through it :D

Not for the faint-hearted, Here's some pics as-of 29th June 06

Hiya Valver :)

Tell you what i came damn close to calling it a day after my mig fubar'ed on me (wire feed wheels jamming and then grit blaster had got damp and barely worked) grr

But hopefully sorted those and spent a few hours actually on the car

Bit of bad news well fixable bad news, The rear quarters/wings/inner sills/rear inner arches were so well wrapped in bubble-wrap and in their own factory fitted cardboard jackets and then in normal boxes i hadn't checked them (well wings i did unwrap and their still in the living room lol) and upon close inspection of the panel i'm going to be putting on 1st i spotted a small dent :(
I carefully pushed it back with a firm hand but won't know if it will "kink" out again when the panels on

I think after i took it over to the farm and unwrapped it etc the days it's been stored in a barn the farmers dog may of ran into it or prolly tossed a large stone etc (she likes to carry half and full house bricks around and tosses these into the air lol) and caused the damage, I think with no scratch mark that she may of ran/skidded into it while chasing a cat or rat etc
But that's the least of my worries at the moment

Ohh all stuff bar the outer sills are hadrian, The outer sills were from SEL but i must say they are a beauty of a fit :)

Well off to dream of a minty shell :D

Hiya's,
gaz here's the linky
http://www.beeversautopanels.co.uk/

They deliver all UK as standard but some highland/islands i think they may charge extra (as normal for most uk deliveries etc)

The delivery was fast and the guy i spoke to on the phone knew his gte's :)

All Hadrian as i said and they are based in Barnsley

Think delivery was £10 (off top of my head)

Ohh best add other Hadrian stockists were x2 the price of beevers !!!!

Hope this helps

ps: I bought 2 sealey spot-weld drill bits 6mm and 8mm i thinks (can check as reciepts in car) , With delivery they came to 34 or 36 quid, Sounds dear but man are they good and are well worth the money as they cut through the panels like a hot knife through butter
Ended up using the larger of the two for easiness

Hiya,
Yeah rear quarter i've started is a great fit
So too is the rear inner arch (gotta return other one as it's not for a mk2 astra lol, But they're sending the correct one with no Q's asked so i'm happy)

Hopefully after a mig welder fiasco today (need a new swan-neck grrrrrrr, So trip to machine mart as they stock them lol) maybe tomorrow/sunday one side will be all welded up ready for prep

Had a real pig of a day today one way or another so mainly did some grinding but rear panels all but done cutting-wise for fitting :)

Not a massive progression due to factors beyond my control :(

Actually sprayed 1/2 interior up to sunroof area and all passenger 1/4 in 2k etch primer lastnight

Will get more pics soon

Hopefully next week whole shell/panels will be done in at least etch primer and maybe 2 coats of highbuild

Decided engine bay and underneath of car will be done in solid (got nearest chip colour to champ burg as i could, This means no phaffing with clearcoats underneath and engine bay (makes my life easier and resto that bit quicker))

Hiya's,

Ok ages since last post :(

After long and hard thinking i gave up on this car

Don't panic ................

What threw me into this was the box sectioning from engine mounts that curve to the fronts of the sills were well rusted, In places i could measure 2/3rds of this sectioning had rusted away or was getting real bad

With a let going in and me liking life and safety i fell on a shell local to me off Richard GTE, Went and saw it and bought it, He delivered :)

Today i have almost finished the drivers side inner/outer rear arches and sill

Not many hours tomorrow and i will be on passenger side (i find it's an easier side as no petrol pipe)

Basicly what was rusted really bad (hidden rot) on my original shell the new one wasn't and visa-versa

Here's some pics below (bay i did black synthetic after a clean and sandblast where needed etc)

Ohh and the black engine bay area is mega dusty ;)

Hiya,
Just the inners/outers and sills both sides and new wings

After doors + tailgate but low on funds at the mo hence old dented door on pic (to align sill) lol ohh and a merit tailgate to stop weather flooding sparewheel well lol

After replacing arches/sills i can see some work will be needed around the windscreen :( don't look too deeply rusted so may weld up or at worst cut/weld new metal in

Going to weld over all damn chassis paint drip holes (on all astras i've checked the rust eats around these from underneath around the lip of the underseal the factory put on)

Anyways i'm off for sleep and am looking forward to having a rolling shell to paint and then let :)

Wow, just read back on this and an interesting read! Very constructive with the blaster, loving that :D

A bit of bad luck with the last project but I hope this one turns out a lot better. Good luck!

Hiya's,
Pics i'd already posted

And later i will post last pics i take today

Plan is to get all welding done today (rained off yesterday) and bro is going to clean underside etc, Then when she is dropped and rollable she'll be pushed into a barn and filled/prepped for paint/sealing etc, Was going to fill her while blocked up but i suspect there may be a bit of flex when she is rollable so this way any give etc won't have any effect on the filling (i hope)

EDITED This ...........

No pics to load as we (bro and me) got carried away finding more hidden rust etc lol

Gonna bring the resto up to date textually (ohh arrrr missus)

Engine bay is in black and is ready for engine etc
Front inner wing areas are ready to be stone-chipped
Sills are on but welds need grinding
Outer/inner rear arches are on but also need final grinding
All paint drip holes inside are plated (only front floorpan area as rears etc are fine)
Bro spent most of yesterday cleaning underside ready for paint/anti-stone-chip

To be done to make shell rollable ......

Replace NS rear upper spring mount (man what a mess from inner rust :( )
NS Top inner arch which repair piece don't cover has to be plated
OS bottom inner edge arch to be plated (same as i've done on NS)
From petrol tank area back needs cleaning and rust areas cleaned and/or plated
Need to weld coachbolts from floor sides for brake/fuel line holders

After the above is done (damn this weather as i'm dependant on it) the underside will be etched/primed/painted/anti-stone-proofed

Then will do brake lines and fuel lines (just got to get fuel lines now)

I think this covers the main niggly bits left, Then it's on with pas rack/suspension/wheels and get her into the barn to body filler and paint ohh and then have the head-ache of installing all interior :( lol

Gonna sort bro's superblackbird (nice bike til he dropped it lol) as it needs a new tyre/sprocket set so as it's his birthday i'll do it for him, So no work on shell today

Time goes by fast when ya tackling rust !!! he he

More when i get time to sort pics and upload
