How badly cracked is the front bumper? (any pics of it) i'm still looking for one for my sxi, if you do change for the gte ones & the crack isnt too bad ( i can plastic weld) then i would love to take it off you, ( 1st refusal on it) lol

Nope mate looks tacky - i had a gte front bumper on my old 1300 and the std rear and its not right.

Keep it sx and source a new bumper. I think maybe you don't want to go down the smooth boot route if you don't think it looks good!

That looks sweet as mate!

I had a white 16sv SX before the GTE. The plans i had for it was same to what you have got! Twin 40s etc. Mine came with GTE bumpers, and if im being honest i always wanted the SX bumpers back on it (didnt come with the car sadly). I managed to find a front bumper but it was the wrong colour and at the time i didnt have enough to get it sprayed.

Looking through my archive of pics, it was Pockets' red Astra that made me want to stick with Astra's in the first place! (Its all your fault mate!) :D

Think of it this way: Do you want a replica GTE or an SX that can hold its own and suprise a few people off the lights? I also found a few styling options using the SX bumpers that might be of interest. Ill try and find the pics.

Either way mate, POST MORE PICS! :)

I'm still uncertain what bumpers to go with, all i know is that the rear one has to look good with a smooth tailgate and be able to house a square number plate (which my GTE one has already been modded to do so)

If Addz can get me some styling options up of what you can do with SX bumpers, it may put my mind at rest!

i dont have any newer pics of the rear to help you out ross, ill have another look.

i just debadged the tailgate, colour coded the grab handle, smoke tinted the indicator and reverse lights and then made my number plate smaller. i was thinking of puting some thing like a megane front lip on the rear to lower the back bumper down a bit then went off the idea!

The grill in the last photo, is that modded by yourself? Do you just cut the bar out and fill the hole?

MK2-JOHN

Thats how i modeded my last grill, just cut the bar out & used fibre glass to fill the gaps on each side,
that whole car looks identical to my 1st sxi (but mine was an H-reg & had 16" STIL-AUTO SR 500 alloys)

nice car mate, it got a lot of attention and rightly so, its really eye catching.

I think if you go ****ing around with the way it looks, your only going to detract from the fantastic job that been done on it, that only need finishing touches now, imho smooth boot/square plate is just going to make it look like another Halfords special:(

dont do it, please!

I am getting the tailgate sprayed along with the bad boy bonnet and they will be going on but the originals will go into storage, if the smoothness doesn't suit then they will come off, simple.

An i think i should get entered into a mag or something for this:

That is a really nice looking mk2 you have there dude, im not really supposed to be on here seen as i own a mk1 but please ffs don't start chopping the grill or relocating number plates! You will only turn into a chav and start wearing your cap backwards and people will laugh at you and not with you when you talk!

Is it white 'mayonaise'? I get that out the breather pipe on my std head breather.

It got better after i removed the plate and flushed it with fresh oil. And then it was even better after full oil change. Get it every now and then, must be minute amounts of water entering somewhere.

Engine flush may help?

Other wise i'd just invest in a longer piece of pipe and divert the crap firing into the carbs!!

Are you going RWYB on sun ross - really want to see your spangley vehicle

Its more just plain oil that comes out, bit of a stink and makes a right mess!! I have changed the oil and flushed the engine, still the same. RWYB?? Havn't planned to go to any shows, i think i ought to step my game up a little!

take that breather filter thing off, get a long piece of pipe that fits, get a tank of some sort, washer bottle or a shiney one and use as a catch tank, stick the pipe into it.

i think the bonnet would look good, boot im not sure, maybe smooth boot but keep the sx spoiler, put a normal shape plate in the bumper.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c348/ross_mk2/PowerCurve2-10-06.jpg

101BHP!!!

It upset me a little at first because i was expecting a lot more, then the guy told me that the limiter stopped it and it had potential to go a little more, made me feel a little better but how can i change the limiter on the 16sv? Had to go into the office for chip & pin and everyone was praising my car, how great it was smooth curve etc.. etc.. so that brightened me up even more then i got in it........... BLOODY HELL!!!! Its a different car!!!! Runs great, sounds great i'm in love again!!!

So the cars moving on finally! Anyone got info on stretching the limiter?

richie00boy
02-10-2006, 04:30 PM
Does the car run an ign ECU? That would be the key I would imagine. Otherwise limiting might be achieved by a centrifugal spring contact in the rotor arm, which you might be able to stop opening.

Do you know which exact cam is fitted?

Ross_Mk2
02-10-2006, 04:41 PM
The cam is kent: nvo62! Thats all i know and there is an ECU!

SV engine has a 'hall effect sensor' IRC according to the haynes.

This prevents the car reving to over 6,000 rpm. I'm not sure how this can be removed though.

I don't either, but it needs to go, or at least be pushed up the rpm a little! I notice it a lot just if i test the power of the car, at its most dangerous when it really pics up you get a second of it then are clawed back by the limiter if you don't change gear!

richie00boy
05-10-2006, 11:38 AM
I would imagine the hall sensor feeds the ECU with a RPM signal, to effect the correct advance curve. Therefore you cannot remove it, what you must do is chip the ECU somehow to allow higher revving.

Unless it's a really dumb system and the hall sensor really is just used to trigger the limiter.

Tony25
05-10-2006, 11:47 AM
Or ditch the ecu and wiring use a distributor from an early carbed vaux which doesn't have any rev limiter.

Thats sounds dangerous to me! Plus the ecu must be there for other things, right? Does anyone know where i can get an ECU like this chipped?

richie00boy
05-10-2006, 12:37 PM
Not sure if the early dissy fits. Also the advance curve might be wrong, but then again the ECU controlled advance curve would be wrong for the new cam anyway so probably much of a muchness.

Ross_Mk2
05-10-2006, 12:52 PM
I need it chipped then by the sounds, does anyone know who to contact about doing this?

richie00boy
06-10-2006, 01:06 PM
I believe there is a company called H+H that do a modification to the older style distributor to get the correct advance curve.

You might need ARP rod bolts to rev much past 6k anyway, to be extra safe at least anyway.

Err... not quite that simple! The carb's are no good there is no other explenation to why its not running correctly, so either i purchase another set for around £300 or i buy a bigger engine for a little more money!

On another note i dunno weither its just a one off thing or somethings about to go t1t's up! You all know i have been complaining about electrics killing my idle for some time, then i went to the crimbo meet and the car called me a lier and since then its got a little better thanks to a new earth to my head unit (thanks to Mr.Rusty, it seems to have helped somewhat) but this morning...... oh dear!!! Also if you are interested I think that www.tuning.co.uk have got a stock of meshed grills for the standard type face lift bumper!

I can't see them mate, where am i looking?

Edt: I found them! I think i will wait a few more days for my main man Mikey G!

Really nice mate - still need to see this in the metal. You got the grille in the end then.

Single wiper it I reckon that will complete the look.

Are the carbs sorted out now?

Well the car tried to kill me again last night!

For some reason the accelerator cable desided to slide out of the pedal...... while at one of the busiest islands in the west midlands! I proceeded to shite myself as cars were coming wizzing round me from all directions, and tried fiddling with it blind as i was not risking hanging my legs out of the car to look! Managed to get it back on for it to slip off at the next island also, i started shouting ended up hurting my hand but got it to limp home with the gilfriends hair band strapping the thing up till i can look at it tonight!

I hate little niggly jobs, i also have the steering wheel to take off somehow and fix the horn and then align it back up properly.

It has been a very very long time since this was updated! A few threads have been created since about various engine problems i have been getting but........

Thanks to Mark T who sent me another ECU to try (touch wood) it seems to have fixed the problem! So with renewed enthusiasm i should start to get bits and niggles sorted that have been nagging away as of late but just couldn't get the energy together to fix while not running correctly! An MOT is looming so certain things need addressing ASAP!

Well she is starting to show her age now and the fact that its used day in day out speeds up that process! Found this in the drivers footwell:

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c348/ross_mk2/DSC00028.jpg

Also the bulkhead looks to have split, you can just see the patch that Ally must have put into place!:

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c348/ross_mk2/DSC00027.jpg

With a few hours work here is the drivers footwell in the process of being treated:

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c348/ross_mk2/DSC00029.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c348/ross_mk2/DSC00031.jpg

No finished pictures sorry, will keep the carpet up and take some with it all painted up!

Also the rear valance has taken a beating over the last year (acctually a mauling) hardly any metal left when we took the rear bumper off, didnt get any pictures of it rotting but will get some up of it finished when the rain dies off and we can actually finish whats been started!

I've promised myself never to get lazy with the car again just looking back over pictures of it over the last few years nearly brings a tear to my eye as to how great it can look!

Ok so what turned out to be a small patch up job, ended up being an overhaul as while it was being done, this needs doing oh and this needs doing "may as well do it while its in pieces".... that kind of job! There are a few pictures missing but you get the basic idea i would imagine, just to put some of the interior together tonight and away we go! Full respray to be undertaken asap so just rattle cans have been used for the time being!

Me, my dad & a friend who does body work on trucks day in day out!

Forgot to get pictures but we also had to make a new rear spring hanger as the chassis had rotted around it! Never seen it go there before either

Looks like you did a good job on it. How come you ground the bits in front of the wheel arch like that? Looked like it was sound metal? The footwell looked scary, the seam at the top looked really bad and looks hard to sort.

I believe it's from where they had welded in new metal so ground down the weld afterwards. Correct me if I'm wrong Ross.

Yes correct the picture where i was grinding is when the new sill (well 1/4 of a new sill panel) went in!

There had been some right b@lls up with the arch repair panels that were put in previous to my ownership which were hidden with layers and layers of filler! You can see that the arch has a sort of 50p shape in the corner as in its not fully rounded, dont quite know how the panel ended up creased right in the corner of the arch to go like that but instead of knocking the panel it was just fillered over!

The finishing touches will be done as soon as i can get it into a spray booth, for now i will be driving the car around like it is knowing its full sound bodywise!

Looking good there Ross, should last you for a few more years yet, especially if you go crazy with some waxoyl inside the rear wing and along the sills.

Coming back from my trip to Stoke yesterday i noticed the EML come on while travelling motorway speeds then dissapear this happened twice.

Wasnt on when i got home so i flashed the codes while still running:

19 - RPM signal (crankshaft sensor) - Incorrect signal.
13 - Oxygen sensor - No change in voltage/open circuit.
74 - Air Flow Sensor (AFS) - High voltage.

Dont understand how if there was a big problem why the light didn't stay on and also i have replaced the lambda sensor in the last 4-5 months as only 1 was playing up.
