  • General Info on SXI

    Hi chaps and Chapesses.

I'm going to have a look at an SXI 5 door this evening. While I am competent in my ability to check general condition of body work / trim / driving characteristics etc i absolutly do not know about fuel injection.

What are good ways to tell if the 1.8se engine is a keeper?

    Thanks in advance

Usually checks, oil level, oil filler cap, smell the coolant for exhaust fumes/sludge/low coolant level etc

Should starts 3rd or fourth turn of the engine on the starter and idle smoothly imeadiately. (thats how mine starts anyway)

Acceleration should be brisk and smooth.

      very good strong engine

look out for the usual stuff doesnt make a difference that its injection all the usual engine checks apply

      smoke rattles etc
check for smooth acceleration, smooth idle

Ok so as long as it starts and idles fine then that is the difference taken car of.

What about sort of lag? the only Injection car i have driven is a 1.1 fiesta and when you touch the throttle on that it takes a moment to respond (not quite a second) the carb doesn't.

i bought an sri once that if you put your foot down quick it wouldnt rev but if you fead the gas in slowly it was fine....plugs

probably the same prob on the fiesta

first things to do apart from the oil change is check the dissy cap , rotor arm , plugs and leads. if there dodgy it could be hesitant on pick up or under load

Out of interest what would people be prepared to pay for a SXI?

I'm expecting it to be in very good condition with relative low miles and service history for £585 advertising.

            Average Mk2's aren't worth more than £400 i don't think (dependant on T&T)

I payed £250 for the one i have now, & that was with a tired engine, i payed about £800 for my 1st one 6 years ago & that was mint, lowered, k&n induction kit, nice alloys & exhaust
£400 sounds reasonable for the one your going to look at

Sold my 5 door H reg, 79k for £1000 in 2002. £400-500 looks about right for a good one.

IT WAS AN SX 130K not worth £500 by any stretch of the imagination

                            Re: General Info on SXI

My dad had an SX and that is one of the reasons that i'm into the MK2.

This one i saw the other night was just a bit knackered. The body work was prob better than mine and the interior is very nice in those. However it didn't start very well and i really only want to get a quicker verison.

If i had put the two cars together i would have come up with a really clean, reliable SX good for another 40-50k easy but i've got no time or space and if i had bought it i'd want to sell F817HMY straight away to fund it.

I'm still on the look out though, if you want these cars you have to buy a good one when its availible and worry about what to do with it / where to keep it afterwards!
