  • Resetting ECU....

I tend to find that when i reset the ECU, the car drives nicer!

It seems to idle nicer and then accelerate slightly better.

Is this normal? I always thought it should run worse as its in 'learn' mode. Is this a sign of a problem?

Or am i just imagining it?

OMG your little banana man isnt moving! Poor thing.

Sure its fine Addz, nothing sounds terribly wrong there

My logic says it should run best once learned, so maybe a sensor is out of it's usual range or something. Maybe have a look on Topbuzz site and check your out with a multimeter.

        Thats what i was thinking...

I've replaced the CTS, maybe Lambda sensor?

Is there anyway of checking thats working correctly with a multimeter?

How do you reset the ecu?
          Why do you want too?

Just curious as never heard anyone do that before.

            Graham,
As far as i know it's a battery off for 20mins or more

Then when battery's reconnected the ecu assumes the "learn mode" and self-sorts the optimum settings

            Hope this makes sense

            Ciao

You'd normally only do this if it's had a problem or if you've changed a sensor, just so it re-learns. Not genarally on the service list

I had a problem with my let ecu after about 300 mile it would start running lean.

turned out to be the ecu was faulty.

                    Re: Resetting ECU....

                    Ditto in a way sbd16v,
But reading/searches throws up the old battery-off answer but .........

I think logically that usually when the battery has been connected the engine is generally at a cold state

So what happenes is you reconnect battery and off you go with a cold-lukewarm engine, Maybe the extra fuel to air ratio (like an auto choke effect) lulls one into thinking the ecu is in learn-mode as engine maybe a bit unresponsive
But in reality it is engine warming up etc

Be great if they could sort this ecu reset out on myth busters lol

Also if you had a 3rd party ecu etc setup, And it was RR'ed to set up
What would happen if then you had to disconnect the battery ? If it had to be setup live so to speak wouldn't battery removal remove any inputs programmed into it ! I think not unless i'm way off the mark

                    Anyways

Off to hunt cabby part #'s grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

                      Re: Resetting ECU....

I wasnt actually doing it to reset the ecu, i was trying to get my HID kit to work, which meant undoing the battery for 20mins or more each time, and each time the car drove much nicer afterwards.

And then after a while it goes back to how it usually is....

                        Re: Resetting ECU....

If you ground pin 20 (IIRC) the ECU will ignore the lambda. Much cheaper than a new sensor!

But surely not as optimised running?

                            Re: Resetting ECU....

Maybe not, but no lambda is batter than an incorrectly reading one...

iv been told if you take the bat off and leave it so the ecu is in reste mode..that if you get back in the car and drive it hard the ecu sets its self for your driving ie the car will go a bit better ???? or is the bloke who told me that talking crap lol ???
