Got these waiting for Geoffs Nova (if we ever finish it) and couldn't resist trying them on- shame the centre cap won't clear the CV joint on the front

that dose look nice m8,,, shame bout the cap on alloys...
bigdrifter
15-02-2006, 08:14 PM
It needs about 1/2 an inch lopping of the end of the CV joint thread to fit the cap properly which I won't do just to try them on. I going to be putting something more subtle on when I find something I like (even though I a big fan of the Speedlines) but for now the GSI rims are tidy enough and all in brand new rubber so mustn't grumble

i like the bonnet me i think it looks ace a bit diffrent to the other bad boys i av seen
Very nice, always wanted them wheels myself. Sorry but i dont like the GSi wheels at all might look better black to match the trim. As for the bonnet it is so slight i wouldnt even call it a bad boy tbh.
Hope she gives you as much fun as she did me. Got a good one there :) :)

Could do with the paint code for the bumper strips and skirts etc if you know it please Zoe- whatever wheels I end up fitting will be going the same colour as all the anthracite bits.
When I see the bonnet in a picture, I don't like it but in real life I actuually do so for now at least its staying. Will have to see how I feel about it when I have some paintwork done

Bonnet will be going shortly I think in favour of a standard one and wheels might not be on much longer either but the colour is definately staying. Trying to find out what colour all the rubstrips and skirts have been done so that i can match the wheels - charcoal/anthracite in real life but doesn't show up that well in the pics

The Cav V6 has arrived to donate its five stud set-up now so on the look out for some Turbo rims to get painted anthracite.
Got on with the waxoyling yesterday so stripped it all out inside and filled all in doors, quarters, sills etc then did all the underside. Quite pleased not to find any major horrors anywhere and the floor is near perfect.
Dropped off the standard replacement bonnet for painting yesterday too so that should be on for next weekend

Got the couple of bits of welding done and a good waxoyl before it went for test- only advise note was on N/S/F strut having slight play in the piston/shaft.
I bought it from Forever Smitten on here (Berley George) who bought it from Zoe (above)
The wheels are going charcoal the same as the skirts etc and I am having new rub strips on along with new arches and champ side decals in the winter. The other option on rims I like is the late Omega MV6 ones but I don't want to fit anything bigger than the 16"s really

Been to make sure the new bonnet matches today, very pleased that he managed to get the colour spot on. Picking it up tomorrow once its been polished but tried it on today and it looks a completely different car- really pleased that I decded standard would be best on it now
Where did you buy the car from & how long have u owned it?
Looks a lot like my bosses old car without the bonnet.
Will not be the same car, i owned it for 5 years and knew the owners before that, the cars always been in Bedfordshire also apart from 6 months when george had it last year.
Been to make sure the new bonnet matches today, very pleased that he managed to get the colour spot on. Picking it up tomorrow once its been polished but tried it on today and it looks a completely fifferent car- really pleased that I decded standard would be best on it now
Got to agree, would like to see a standard bumper on it also, did have one but never got around to fitting it.
Edit, paint wasnt that old so shouldnt of been hard to match, when it come out of the bodyshop i remember it looking alot lighter than it was before going in, which i thought should have been the other way around and should have been darker as when the black strip was taken off on the boot it was dark dark paint under it. Weird.
bigdrifter
27-04-2006, 10:41 PM
The bumper is staying (for now at least) and trying to source brand new genuine exhaust system and rubstrips to go with the Champ decals I got the other week. Won Untouchables Daewoo vents too so they will be going on too hopefully
She needed a few £'s spent on her and it seems like you have done that, top job. Will you be taking it to any shows this year?

i really like it :bananajump: the number plates a nice touch aswell. you say that you're thinking about getting the headlamp washers re-fitted in the winter, does that mean you'll have to get a new front bumper, or are you gonna get drilling?

Got a dilema- been offered my mates Cav SRI H plate Hatchback. So what I hear you ask, its got a LET fitted that has developed a knocking from the bottom end and is the right side of expensive. The car is almost every bit as immaculate as my old Grey one (which I miss alot) and looks stunning- I'll try get some photos as without seeing it then its hard to picture a car. Its got no tax or test at the moment and with the knocking doesn't have a great deal going for it by the sounds of it but I got a soft spot for Cav Hatches and I know its a spot on car. I'm thinking of buying the Cav, get the engine sorted and then run it while I get all the bodywork done on the GTE. Then once the bodywork is done fit the LET to the GTE and an XE into the Cav and sell it on. Thats alot of what ifs at the moment as he not totally sure that he can let it go but I think that by the sounds the donkey is making that the shells have packed their bags which will more than likely mean a scored crank.
It would be a shame to pull the Cav apart and I definately wouldn't scrap it, just that it makes it less desirable without the LET in and possibly the same situation with the GTE. Looks lovely aswell even in the champagne gold!
Would like both but only have room for one car in the long run- oh decisions, decisions
GazJevs84
06-08-2006, 08:29 PM
buy the cav take out the engine and put it in the GTE when it is rebuilt and put the xe in the cav and sell it
bigdrifter
07-08-2006, 06:43 PM
Thinking of rebuilding the LET bottom end, run the Cav through winter as it is while I get the GTE in A1 condition then fit the LET into the GTE in spring and find another XE for the Cav- don't really want to sacrifice my GTEs 70 odd thousand mile XE for a car I selling.

Just caught up with this thread again, (bit slow in my old age!!) again only a personal opinion, but I love the body coloured rims on that car (Geoffs Nova ones) and think the colour really suits. It would look superb completely de swaged and never seen it done on a dark colour before.:applause:

Finally took all the five stud set-up off the donor Cav V6 yesterday - really have dropped on well............
Brand new discs, pads, shoes and retaining pins/springs all round! Spent this afternoon cleaning it all up and painting ready for installing. Think I may have finally found the petrol smell thats been in the car since time began................. well since Zoe can remember anyway - the braided hose from the bottom of the tank to the fuel pump is split and perished. Its never lost a drop until this last weekend, where its stood the longest since I've had the car (4 days!), the fuel guage was on a quarter when I parked it up on Saturday then showing empty this morning. Saw the leak when I got to work and chopped the hose down for now until I can get a new one tomorrow, so hopefully that will cure the smell of fuel too

Chris
You interested in another one? - a red one thats apparently been locked up in a workshop for a few years. Supposedly very clean!
Am awaiting details but could be another one needing your loving restoration touch.

I remember that GTE
Used to be in Bur be bear Berley's possession and zoe before that.
=(.)~(.)=
Oh my god it looks so different now , plates different , Bonnet , Mk1 GTE interior , Digi dash with the Mk3 three comp is it, the anthracite wheels that were dreamed of in the past , you changed so much I hardly recognise it .
lol
I think I only remember ever sitting in it twice or maybe just the once when the Little man Berley from Shirley had it.

Been giving the GTE a bit of loving today in the form of plenty of polishing

Cant remember if these wheels were metal , alloy or not or wether you still have them at all , you should have had those wheels done in anthracite too.
Another sweet alternative , I think they would have matched the car slightly better.

Like this? Thats my old car, fancied something different this time round. Its all mk3 GSI interior with mk1 badges in the seats.
Might be interested if you get some details Berley, although time and space aren't too great at the minute

My favourite car this one, the colour of the wheels look great with the body colour. It gives me some much needed inspiration to get mine done.

Treebeard, the Cav is my old car that I sold to buy the GTE - as much as I love it, I wanted a GTE more and had got as far as I could with the Cav so sold it to make way for a new project. The owner of it now still keeps in touch and has kept it the same. I'd have stuck with the GSI wheels on the GTE but have had enough of them now, the Cav had them, my Stepbrothers Nova has a set and I've got a set on my mk3 workvan too.
I would have really liked to find a mint set of GTE teardrops for it but I don't think the silver suits the car too well with it being Silk Violet and the Teardrops look daft when not in silver
More pics of the Cav are in here http://www.vauxhallownersnetwork.co.uk/showthread.php?t=69452

Today I really feel like giving in - I can't find the cause of the front end suspension clunks - only thing left to try is leg top mounts - failing that I give up for now! Also got a nasty rattle somewhere near the front that I can't pinpoint - something to do with exhaust but can't see an obvious problem there either :(

Clunks are sorted - pair of ball joints cured it in the end, both had the tiniest amout of lift in them. Found it odd that the noise couldn't be heard when it was 4 stud but was there immediately after fitting the 5 stud legs

Bigdrifter, I had a similar wrattling sound near the exhaust when I had my GTE 8V.
This turned out to be a worn metal ring at the joint where the manifold meets the next section of the exhaust.
It was cheap and easy to fix. I'm sorry, but I can't remember the name of the part.
Hope this helps.

I've since bought another complete system including the manifold (All Magnex) but its not fitted yet, will be going on after the paint is done along with fixing the leaky sump, new lifters, Courtenay cams and Courtenay chip - all sitting waiting. Thanks for the advice

As of tomorrow its off the road - the stripdown starts in the morning ready to despatch the car to the bodyshop on Monday. Expecting it to be gone for a month realistically so l'll be driving my £30 mk3 Astra for a bit until its all back together. Been adding up what its all cost so far and including buying the car in the first place and the bodywork/respray and its just as scary as l thought - about £5k :dizzy: :bigcry:
New thread will start tomorrow and l'll try to keep plenty of pics and updates in there as they get on with the bodywork
