What other 2.0 16v Engines can match the XE?

The (C)20XE has to be the most widely recognisable Engine to have resided in a Vauxhall but more than that it's found homes in many a kit car and even a few other Marques (Mk1 Escort XE anyone?). It's proven its self both on and off the trak and 120,000mile engines still beat strongly with little loss in power prove testament to it longevity.
What have other manufacturers got to offer in the 2L16v flavour to rival the XE, Is the fact that the engine was created in a pre tree-hugging, love thy low exhaust emissions figures era () put it out of reach of modern competition?

Have the Japanese got anything to rival it? If so is it as reliable and (in a relative way) as simple an XE?
What about Ford? Are their 2.0 Zetec lumps worthy of note?
Have ze Germans with there clever engineering got a lump to rival the XE?
Has any main-stream manufacturer got a challenger?

Honda engines are quite good. In the US, Honda (Acura) have a replacement for the Integra called the RSX. There is a version called the RSX Type-S that comes with the new K20 Honda engine - it is 200BHP with a 6-speed box AND it means US emissions standards. Then there's the Type-R engine that is 1800cc and 220BHP standard.

I'd say the 1.9 Mi16 lump is probably the nearest European offering. Bigger valve area, more power per litre, less torque, but more power.

The engine that does probably wipe the floor with the XE, but is rare is the 2 litre version of the S14 M3 Engine as fitted to the E30 320iS sold in Portugal and Italy. It was 193bhp from the factory and revved to 8k happily on std rods and bolts.

As far as an affordable, popular 2litre 16v goes though......................can't see anything touching the Cosworth/Vauxhall offering to be honest!!!!

there're some...

Honda's 1.6 DOHC VTEC (160 hp) B16A. it's almost a 'bullet proof' engine like the XE. Also there're the B18 (1.8 vtec) and B20 (non-vtec) but the they just swap the vtec head and you get a B20 VTEC (2.0 VTEC).

And the B series Type R versions are lovely.

I've seen NA Civics/CRX's (everyday cars) doing 14's, 13's even high 12's (with slicks) all day long with and getting beat the hell off them on the streets. Also low 11 sec NA allmotor drag cars (stock chasis)

And not to mention Turbo conversions.... 350+ WHP from a 1.6 VTEC Turbo? 420+ WHP from a 1.8 turbo? there's a bore out B18 (now 2.0) on the making at the shop its suppose to make more than 500 WHP...

Engine tunning reflects on the marquet, for example locally we get lots of jap cars, and the B16A was the most cheap/high powered NA engine around, Honda engines have a big development locally.

Now the scene is turning around the SR20DET (Nissan's 2.0 Turbo engine) another impressive jap engine, Also the Celica/MR2 3SGET (2.0 turbo),

Another good NA jap engine Toyota 4AGE 1.6 20v 'silvertop' and 'blacktop' versions, even on its old 16v version is a good engine.

The Euro escene is a way down locally, to the point that some people say that euro cars (VW, Opel with small engines basiclly) cant perform.

BUT we have lots of Euro luxury/sports cars (BMW M5s M3s, Mercedes, Alfas) Just named and its here, and Euro Sport cars Lotus, Ferraris, Porches(this country is said to be the 2nd with most porsches in Latin america), etc.

Feck there's even one 'Maybach' in the same street that my mechanic's shop is.

You guys on the other hand have lots of Euro tunning. In fact i've never seen a XE/LET in live action, mine is still in bits and its the only XE/LET engine locally.

Currently i think im the only one crazy enough locally to modify an Opel engine (there're some Golfs turbos around that are pretty fast)

Toyota 2.0i 16v 170bhp - as found in old Celica's, theres a good Alfa 2.0 16v out there, and through STT Im fully aware of what the Mi16 can do.

All my mates are into VTEC's, they are rapid for 1600's.

What about the Honda S2000 lump? 247bhp Standard (and they have a digidash!!!)

but the XE's still right up there!

I didnt realise the bhp on the toyota celica was as high as that, my mate is into his toyotas and i have raced both his 2.0 16v MR2 and his 2.0 16v celica and left both of them. For durability, length of life, amount of abuse it can take and (as said ) its relative simpleness the XE must be up there.

i think all of the above engines mentioned apart from the c20XE and Mi16 cost a bomb second hand! so can anything beet the XE or Mi in value for money!

as for rover k-series i have heard they aren't the most reliable of engines!?

Dave Walker (Ex CCC) would have something to say about that. People don't know how to build them properly, so he says. They're certainly very light engines.

Lancia had pretty good 2.0 16v's (Thema?) too, especially in turbo form ('grale...)

I went to the autosport show at the begining of the year.
And about 9 out of 10 engine tuning stands had a modified XE on display!!

That must tell you something, when the pros choose a XE over any other engine to show tuning potential

I Think that the MI lump is a better design to the XE its just the volume of production that has limited its success.

The Mi has bigger valves, bigger inlet and exhaust ports (8 of them) - and the head is the right way round.

but still the Mi is not as fast as the xe
