View Full Version : Mk2 SR, how rare?
I'm looking at buying a mk2 1987 1.6 SR as a project, and wondered if its worth getting it, as i've never seen one for sale and believe them to be quite rare. I had a 1.4 L as my first car and currently own a mk3, but i want a project to do up and learn from.
Anyone know what engine would be in this, (16sv?) and what mods could be done to extract a bit more power. I'm looking at mainly learning general mechanics on it and restoring it over time. Then maybe an engine swap at a later date.
Is it worth getting?
cheers,
Mark

1.6 SR has the big block 1.6 engine I beleive as seen in old mk2 Cavs etc. I would imagine being an SR it has a better twin choke carb tho. The SR will have the old retro Check cloth interior (as per early Nova SR's) and a multi dial instrument display.
More power would be the usual filter (bolt on carb top), exhaust, followed by headwork & cam swap. not really worth it tbh.
I'd be tempted to get hold of a GTE. There are loadsa cheap bangers worthy of sprucing up. My own 16v GTE was £350 back in the summer.
I wouldnt blame you for keeping a nice SR alive. Jason Hudson of the PAG did a full restoration on a mk1 SR & used a 2.0 SRi130 engine. Personally tho I wouldnt spend a penny (not even on fuel) on the 1.6 engine.
Good Luck.

GTE's are obviously better, however, having one as a second or main car I think is still gonna be expensive on the insurance side, sadly.
I think my real aim for it, would be to use it as basis to learn how to do all sorts of things, upgrade susp, brakes, engine tweaks, body repairs/rust removal etc etc, and with the SR, I feel it would be worth it, even if the engine is rubbish, atleast one day, when the car was sorted, i could then have the knowledge/confidence to drop in a 18se or even xe!?

yeah if its the big block SH engine it will have the superior twin choke varajet carb, and packs a nice 90bhp and 92lbf-ft. also, in the event of a full scale global nuclear attack, all that will be left on this earth are a bunch 1600 big block engines surrounded by the smouldering remains of the car that used to house them.
pretty sure the mk2 SR only came in red, with graphite steel wheels with the celtic swirl type pattern, hexagonal centre caps. (as seen on the mk2 cavalier commander)
ive not seen one in about 5 years. used to be one parked down the road from me.

rare as these days. Ive got a 1986 Vuaxhall Range brochure wqitha spread on it. The one pictured was in white. As odders saif they came in the to tone with graphite wheels, graphite coloure lower doors and grey plastic bumper. It was dropped in the 1988/89 facelift.

Ye it is that one. The auction has finished now, but i'm hoping to make the trip up there to see it and if everythings ok, get it.
So general thoughts are, they are rare and it would be worth me getting it and doing up over the years, then maybe upgrade the engine when money/insurance allows?
Can anyone confirm what engine is likely to be in this, is it 16sh or 16sv?
Its a 1986/7 model if that makes any difference.
