I'm going to have a gander at a very nice looking white 16v next weekend, I was wondering if you guys could give me any advice on known problems a 16v GTE suffers, it's been standing a long time too (2 years) but the owner assures me that he ran the engine although he didn't say how often/regually :/
Now of course that means it doesn't have an MOT but if the body is clean and theres no evidence of a crunch, would £500 seem reasonable?
Cheers

make sure the sump gasket isnt leaking excessively, they all weap abit as standard.
gaskets are upwards of 40 quid and a day on youre back.
but saying that 500 quid if its reasonabley clean is probably not bad, if you cant get another mot you could probably break even by breaking it.
remeber if its been standing it may need a good few bits and a thorough service.
That all depends on how clean the car is £500 is alot to be shelling out on a car with no t&t ,if it is only in average condition .I would be spending alot of time checking the car inside and out very carefully before handing over any readys mate :) .

£40 - where do you shop, i pay under £4 for each 16v gasket or £9 for the 8v rubber one

To be honest mate id'e be looking at the shell.Check the bulkhead and the rear chassis legs, the other expensive bit would be a porous head.....

thew outer sills behind the back bumper. Check these and give them a good poke.
take out the back 1/4 card and check the sills and round the wheel arsh.
the bulkhead behind the servo where the sterring rack mount is rusts
the inner wings behind the headlights rust too
above all if its been sat on grass for the last two years, run a mile!!!

yeah it had been stored on grass and he informed me that in two places it had gone very bad, not paying £500 for that.......

shell condition is far more important than any engine fault in my opinion.
bretts advice is the best so far and i cant really think of much to add, sills, rear arches, bulkhead by the steering rack, floor pan where your heels go in the footwells. the little plastic flap with the warning triangle image on it in the boot space is another easy way to see the inside of the rear arches. sit in the car, put your foot to the floor on both the brake and clutch, then rock the steering back and fourth. if you can feel the pedals moving excessively side to side, leave it in the field !
who gives a f-ck how much sump gaskets cost?

handbag! :D
he had already said if the body was clean what else to look for, and he's after a bargain so any cost he would probably want to know about.

I don't think I really want it now, mace has a 16v he wants to get rid of so we shall see.
