Ok i shall be continually updating this thread as and when i do bits to the car

The story so far is that i am building an engine to go into my Mk2 Astra SRI the engine will be made up of the following parts

2.0 8v GTE bottom end
18E "big valve head" with inlet manifold
LET pistons
16v conrods
comatec head gasket
1:1 fuel pressure regulator
Adjustable FMU
Toyota CT-26 turbocharger
custom made exhaust manifold

At the same time as the engine being built the car will be udergoing a full re-build with a lot of new body panels, respray and a lot of new mechanical parts

below are a few pics of the car and the turbo :D

small update:

the converstion is on hold as the car has chewed up its 4th driveshaft in 6 months so i think a little restoration work is in order. the car is indefinatly off the road untill its all welded up.

on a good note i have just bought three vacuum gauges, voltmeter and air/fuel ratio meter the next item to get is a C-4 ignition block and a few other bits

a clean engine is a happy engine :D

i spent hours cleanin the engine when i first got the car but when the new engine goes in the whole engine bay will be stripped, any redundant holes will be filled and the bay will be resprayed

Nice project friend!
you will like the result of C20NE turboed.. is a really fun engine with turbo... a lot of torque..

This 18E head have how many bore valves? The C20NE head have 42mm inlet valves and 36.5mm exhaust valves. The 18E have bigger inlet/exhaust valves?

Cheers,

Matheus S. Almeida

still be an 8v head as far as i am aware the actual valve size is exactly the same as the 18SE engine it the actual inlet ports that are about a 3rd bigger allowing more airflow into the head and i will be using this in conjunction with a C20NE camshaft to open up the valves just a little bit further

here are some updated pictures of the head with the inlet manifold bolted on and the T25 turbo manifold bolted on.

as some of you may know the astra is now dead due to an unforeseen amount of rot goblin on the floor pan so i am also on the lookout for another mk2 shell

done a bit more with the engine today and took a few pics of the progress. i put the ICV on and the brake servo pipe aswell as the vacuum pipe to the pressure regulator.

here is my new fuel filter that i got from ebay, i will be keeping the standard fuel filter at the back of the car but decided to have this on the fuel rail aswell.

here is an overall pic of the head of the engine all nearly complete now :D

nice pics ! are you gonna be using a valve in the cam cover breather hose ? otherwise you will get the cam cover pressurised under boost.

Mr-G

yeh i need to get a non return valve to put in there other wise bang goes the engine

Mr-G

well the astra is dead and buried due to lots of underseal hidden rot up the bulkhead and the rear of the car, at the moment the plan is to put the engine into the calibra but it depends on what the future holds really

just thought i would add a couple of pics of the engine as it is at the moment also managed to get hold of a brand new GM oil cooler still in its box from a guy who lives near me for a nice price of £40 :D

at the moment i am sorting out a few other ancillery parts and then i am moving onto the block where most of the machining will be done

Looking good, a few ???'s tho:

What is left to do, what will the complete spec be, where did you get the turbo manifold from?

I know of a nearly new KKK turbo that is for sale for dirt cheap mounted on an audi 80 2.2 engine, that I was thinking about buying for an 8v turbo conversion.

Run the rocker breather to the flow meter. Tap it in with a barbed hose fitting. That way the induction will breathe in the vapours. (as per my 8v turbo)

Block the hole in the throttle body (naturally).

there are a couple of bits left to buy for the top end now, 1:1 fuel pressure regulator,FMU and a non return valve for the rocker breather and the manifold its whats used on the american pontiac turbo engines.

apart from that its just the block left to build but the total finished spec will be:

2.0 block - honed,de-stressed,linebored,reground crank,new shells,piston rings
C20LET pistons remachined to lower compression from 9:1 to 8:5.1
polished conrods
16v oil pump gear
lightened and balanced flywheel
ARP rob bolts
F16CR gearbox
18E head
18E inlet manifold with twin butterfly throttle body
18SE camshaft
1:1 adjustable fuel pressure regulator
12:1 FMU
cast turbo manifold
Garrett T25 turbocharger running 7psi boost
Vauxhall frontera front mounted intercooler with spray cooling system
bailey twin piston dump valve

all running on Bosch motronic managment

Smooth, where did you get the turbo manifold from?

Mr-G
19-01-2005, 03:13 PM
the turbo manifold is from the states, its the standard cast manifold the use on the pontiac turbo engines.

i aqquired it though a member on migweb for a pretty good price :D

oh you lucky bugger!

I wonder how much it would cost to get an engine sent from the states...?

Mr-G
19-01-2005, 08:53 PM
it has been done a couple of times the engines can be picked up for about £300-£400 plus import fees.

have a look at this link its an official site for the turbocharged 8v engine and how to turbocharge the 8v engine they appear on there a lot

hi, i've got a corsa with astra 2.0 8v in it. will it improve performance if i put an 18e head on it? i have a 20xe bottom end laying around aswell, and a c20 ne. would it be good to put the xe pistons in the gte engine in my car, aswell as the 18e head. isn't the 18e carburettor? could i run the injection throught it?? please help. thanks mate (p.s. not gonna turbo it like you have! thanks

LOL the same guy on MIG that is bumping ancient threads

Welcome to Astra Mk2 :)

The XE pistons are no good to the 8V as they will raise the compression ratio too much. Putting the 18 head on a 20 is not as easy as it seems, you need to sort out the electrical issues such as throttle position sensor and hose airflow meter to inlet manifold.

yeah sorry, i'm new to all this. forgive me being a bit slow! google brought it up and i thought it wouldn't still be running unless still for sale!

can't i just bolt the 2.0 inlet to the 18e head?

I would imagine the ports are shaped differently or even sightly offline.

any news on this head of badassastras??

I was wondering that, too. I think he gave up in the end. Fitted it to a Calibra but didn't finish it off, so it never ran?

GazJevs84

that's a shame

Nope its completely different.

The head was fitted to the calibra engine and ran for a while till it came to mot time.

Found terminal rot so the car ended up scrap.

22-01-2006, 09:11 PM
Did the head etc get scrapped as well?

No, the engine and gearbox were sold for £200 and now live in an astra GTE being used as a track car.
