Re: track days for slow cars!!
TBH even if your in a GTE 16v and you go to a decent pre-organised track day then in a straight line your going to be getting overtaken fairly often. Most of it is down to how well your car handles, its in the breaking and cornering that the people behind catch the less able cars/drivers. They dont normally class it by car, its normally divided among driver abiltity as that a more important factor. Novice/intermediate/expert is normally how its broken up, you'd be fine in the novice class, which is where Ive always been.
I say it to all my mates who want to have a go at a trackday but reckon their cars aint good enough, go out and push the car as hard as you can. Ok if its a standard 1.4 Mk2 you've got then it aint really worth it but if the suspension and brakes are up to the job just go out and do it. Dont foget stripping it out a bit will always make it a bit more nimble.
Ive seen plenty of slower cars on trackdays, including 1400 Nova's. Ok a Mk2 is a bit heavier but one 1400 Nova was well sorted and hassling me all the way round. Only chance I got to breath was at the end of the longer straights!
ps. if you do decide to go ahead - remember one thing, use your mirrors. There is nothing more frustrating than being held up by a slower car and the driver is having to good a time themsleves to bother about everyone elses day

Re: track days for slow cars!!
tbh, on the well organised track days, its the faster cars responsibilty to navigate round you safely, not your responsibility to keep out of their way at all costs.
yeah it can feel intimidating with elises and caterfields swarming round you, but the above is still true.
keep to the inside of the track, or indicate the same. they will over take.Last edited by DarrenH; 28-12-2005, 11:06 PM.

Re: track days for slow cars!!
Donington was £96 for the day when I last went. 7mpg on track aint great and fuel at the track is only super unleaded and costs a small bomb, so easily another £80 in fuel for me (5 hour journey there and back too) food and other stuff your looking at £200 over the whole day.
then when you get home possibly new tyres & new brakes like I had back at the start of the year!
its great fun though!

Just look at the Top Gear show hhen they took a transit around nurenburg.Originally posted by astrasteve23track days are so fun, driven bretts old gte a few tines, would concider taking the van. as brett said its about ability and how confident you feel, we overtook a new porche 911 GT3! i think he was a beginer.
give it a go!
She was overtaking bikes
Its all about driver ability not the car
There is a good chance of killing your engine tho, if you get too enthusastic
