  • Re shell ?? is it worth it

I know a lot of posts at moment are by me so if im cloggin up forum i do appolise. But Most of you have a lot more Expiernece with Mk2s then i do and i would put alot of discount on moving a car for a club member lol.

    So this is todays issue.
Decided to do abit on my White astra today mainly i was going to drop engine back out. Noticed abit of what looked like surface rust on the innerwings (near headlights) so me being me gave it a poke and my finger went thro same on other side... a little annoyed and dismayed i got abit brave and went round to rear arches, Gripped it with one hand to see if it would flex only pulled it a little and could tell it was filler so pulled it harder and id say the complete arch lengh ways and 4 to 5 inch up of pure filler and what i think reads "daily star 2006" came of in my hand. :confusion:

Then Daz belmont popped round and confirmed that the bulk head is split. After he went we got inspection lights out and had a proper look at it there are alot of Welded patches around the floor pan and inner wings..
The bottom Cross member is rotten and my slam panel has been mutilated by engine conversion.
Its also been ass ended at some point as well

    So bad times

It just so happens that i bought a black (used to be white Gte) of Rally marshall on here. I was going to use it for bits for mine then sell on rest to gain some £££ back. This gte has been gutted litterally 90 % is in my unit and the shell is under a sheet. All way thro stripping it iv thought the sshell was mint the floor pans are likr brand new. It does have 4 problems
    1.) its stripped properly
2.) Rear arches are shot (i do have repair panels paul aka rally marshall threw them in)
3.) rear of the sills is rotten
4.) It has the worlds worst paint job and some one has smoothes out the roof rails

So now im faced with a dilema and have 2 options
1.) Break both cars and use the £££ to try and buy another (would be a 16v and left a 16v) I do break cars and i genuinly dont think theyd bring in anoth cash to do it.

2.) Take on a job thats probably above my skill set and reshell the white one into the black one Pretty big job for me i would enjoy it Daz says i should do it Everyone else i know have just called me a idiot for even buying a mk2 hence im on here asking lads in the know

Just reached that point where i feel like im lost. Money iv got in the white one i genuinly cant afford to loose but im not getting a choice.

Whats better than driving round in a mint gte knowing you made it just how you want it. Ive seen people take on much worse projects and they came out the otherside smiling.

With a mk2 imho, a good shell is the best buy over everything else. If you have a better shell then thats the one to use, cills and arch's are a fair bit of work. But plating and repairing every little bit can be a pain, it's all do able but the least amount of welding and rot to sort is best. Just chip out the roof rails as it will be hidden when you fit new ones. A 3rd one may not be much better, although either way it's going to be a lot of hard work to get it done. The trick is to break it down into little jobs and not look at the whole car or it will put you off.

          Ben
I did have a go with a hammer and flathead today and it does come out easily. The white astra will never see road again which is quite sad as i have grown quite attached to it. Even tho i think its been cursed at some point

To be honest you have to be serious about MK2 Astras to take on a re-shell, there will be times where you would be sick of the sight of it and it will seem like a bottomless pit you just throw good money into.

Saying that though It's one of the most rewarding things you can do ... to take something from a decrepit state and turn it into something to be proud of ... and you can be proud of anything that you have done yourself not just concourse rebuilds.

I would think that if you'r going to re-shell then you either need a 99% perfect donor shell or be prepared to do some serious restoration to a fair shell, just swapping bits from a crusher state onto a tatty but sound shell is unlikely to be cost effective and your time would be better used and go buy a semi-tatty Mk2 to drive if that's your main goal.

As Ben says everything is repairable but at a cost of time and effort and if part way through you get so hacked off well yes you can sell it either as a project or as parts and you may get your money (spent) back but you will never get the time back (just depends on how you value your time) I would guess a quick and dirty re-shell would be evenings and weekends for a minimum of 8 months or as we know from some restorations in the club they are projects that can last for years.

Whatever you choose to do I wish you luck and I'm sure you if you take it on you will have the majority of the club members support from start to finish.

            Laurie.

              Cheers Laurie appreciated,
I do have a soft spot for 2 cars GTEs and Imprezas probably 2 of the worst cars i could like lol. And it is nice to jump in somthing nice after driving the truck all the time.

What ben has said has made things abit simpler about taking it on in lots of small jobs rather then looking at it and thinking O bugger.
Daz is a legend really met him thro Club hes so far got GTE running and towed it back after the engine mount snapped killing full engine. And today hes been over and agreed that the white one is knackered and the Black one is a good un.

Re: Re shell ?? is it worth it

the trouble with re-shelling a gte is that there are rarely better shells to do it. chicken and egg

                i'd always vote repair

Re: Re shell ?? is it worth it

I think Reshelling it into the black GTE you bought off me is the way to go.

As shes already mostly stripped, get the rear arches done with the repair panels and put a pair of sills on her. The roof channels will dig out quite easily and then get it sprayed. You already have your GTE so put them side by side and do a comprehensive strip of yours and build the parts into the good shell.

Making the shell right is the best thing you will do. Rebuilding the black GTE with your parts once the shell is right will mean youve always got a solid base to work from. Its not as big a job as you might think if your just swapping parts from one to the other. I reckon that the bigger job is getting the shell itself done right. I reckon the actual build (if youve got all the parts) is 4 weekends work for 2 of you.

If you decide you dont want the black GTE shell anymore, let me know as I may know someone who wants it.

Re: Re shell ?? is it worth it

Most GTEs will need some work. If you've got a reasonable shell sat there then repair and.use that. A reshell isn't that bad on a mk2 anyway

                        .
+1 on this. You have a known quantity here. It's worth finding someone handy with a welder and buying the panels and getting it done. Save for a paint job. Write off using the car for a year and the stress goes...........................trust me.

A re-shell isn't that big a job even for an amateur and there are plenty of people on here who can help if you get stuck. Get the welding done on the black one and keep it! You wont get anything much better. My merit is pretty mint and it still needed sill work and rear arches. Your a brave man owning a gte and a scooby!

I'm in the slow process of a full restoration (think it's about 5 years now) due to no time, no money, no room, loss of interest etc.

However I have just started learning to weld so this year I plan to have all the welding done, Both rear arches, inner arches, repir panels on rear valance, bulkhead, a pillers, rear floors, front floors then hopefully an acid dip, then early next year the paint job then the rebuild in time for it's 25th birthday.

That's what owning the car for 15 yeare does to you...

As the black car is stripped this is the best time for a full respray that way you can have a proper job done and make sure all of the rust is removed. Big problem is paying for full spray but you could hire the paint equipment and have a go yourself
