    Morning all,

As am new here a brief introduction about me, am 18yo and I live in the Orkney Islands but could be moving back to england soon.
I am a trained mechanic and run a part time self employed business (repairing cars lol). Anything else you wanna know feel free to ask

Now the best part my car

I have just got this MOT failure mk2 in aboustly great condition
A local garage called me to say he had a mk2 astra that just failed its MOT and that the owner was coming to pick it up. So i jumped in the car and rushed to the garage with £300 in my pocket, I looked around the car and offered the guy £200, 10 mins later i came away £300 richer and with the astra. Now it resides in my drive along with the metro and bmw. On the drive home it seemed very flat and lumpy for a 1.6, once home it refuses to start and even has me stumped in why ??, my basic plans are to get it road legal and then save some cash as I have just brought a cavi sri150 for £200 as a donor car

So basically I just got a 39k 1989 astra mk2 5 door in red for nothing.....just needing work for a MOT

    Work needed:
    N/S/F MacPherson strut weakened
    N/S/F Anti Roll bar weakened
O/S/R Wheel Bearing rough while turning
N/S/F Headlamp Rotten (holes in headlamps....thats a new one to me)
O/S/f Headlamp Rotten (same as above)

    Had three adviorses on:
Both front tyres close to the legal limit
    Center pipe leaking

So for nothing its a pretty cheap(ish) fix

Just need to get the bloody thing to start first lol

More pictures to come when I manage to find good weather to dig out some parts and get on with some work, even through am on the 630am boat off this island on thursday and will be for about week or two I will be trawling scrap yards in Northen England for parts (so if anyone up that way with a astra gimme a PM) So progress will be slow for now.

    Thanks Dani

    P.S. Any questions just ask.

    Re: 1989 astra 1.6

I thought you was in Wales or Ireland after reading the thread. You're Scottish?

Anyway nice car! Looks like another one that has faded paint.

Just keep this nice and original, too many people put faster engines in the base models. Also bare in mind it's winter, car thieves most active times. (Might be a spark plug problem as to why it isn't starting?)

These are very strong cars. At least my fathers was, took it to Poland when it was 20 years old. And back to the UK, driving all the way. And after a service we took it to London and back (400 miles there and back) a few times and then back home, we were about to get some food and the car just lost all power and never came back to life. Probably could of been fixed but by then, my mother decided she no longer wanted her Vauxhall Corsa, so the MK2 met its final trip at the scrapyard. (The Corsa joined it in 2009.)

Also to save people some time:

        Drill it off?

Trust me, you don't want this to be the first recent one. I don't want to go into too much detail but all they need is a flat head screwdriver. (It'd be foolish and giving thieves a lesson to go into detail)

I had three MK2's in my family, they all regularly got broken into at night, we found stuff missing regularly, mainly spare change. But they took personal letters at one stage. And my mothers (a white one) got completely nicked, from the town centre. Went without a trace, on the day of 9/11(exact date). The police found it about a week or two later and we went to view it, they took our washing, I found that kind of funny and ripped the tax disk up for no apparent reason. The insurance later gave it a once over, and came back with a write-off, due to them hitting a curb messing the axle up.

prob will end up drilling it off....People round here know not to touch my cars.....shall not go into detail.

sorry to hear about ya mk2s. I know how easy vauxhalls are....many vauxhall keys i have lost and to improvise...novas my fav for tricks.....anyone will kno the trick that only took steps to start it from unlocking.......thats a shame it was written off for something that could of been repaired. I hate it when insurance companies do that. i wrote a for fiesta off once after hitting a lamppost with the window and shattering the passager window after some guy come round a single track road without thinking about other users.

nice motor to be honest, pretty pathetic reasons to bail out on car by previous owner, basic maintenance stuff. but all the better for you!
