Im going to be fitting a C20LET in my GTE over the next few months. I managed to source an engine that had already been fitted in a mk2 so all the wiring loom was done. That being the one job I was not looking forward to doing. With the loom done it hopefully should be a case of plug and play. Im going to be taking plenty of pictures, not got many at the mo but heres a few any way. Going to be replacing the cambelt/waterpump and idlers next week along with all the manifold studs after finding one was snapped off :( .

23-10-2004, 01:04 PM
ummm can you not change the pully set up just by changing the backing plate i will have a look at some engines but i think you can

Rob_S
23-10-2004, 01:23 PM
yeah you can change it to early spec by using the full backplate and all the pulleys, pump etc

Gander

I can promise that you'll never have so much fun ever again after you've driven you car turbo'd, anything else will pale in comparison and your traffic light grand prix will be against more serious opposition;)

Rob_S
23-10-2004, 09:33 PM
it will suit the car down to the ground i reckon, best engine for yours tom :D

Tom
23-10-2004, 10:49 PM
I believe you can swap to the early pulley set by swaping everything over, but as I`ve just payed out for the full hit , Its not gonna happen. I hope to have it in the car within the next couple of months really, as I want to use the 4 poster lift in my work. I honestly cant wait to drive the beastie :D .

I made up the exhaust downpipe today. Took off the normal XE manifold and bolted the turbo to it. Got a standard Cav T downpipe and cut/shut it to mate up with a couple of Jetex 2.5" bore bends to suit the rest of the system.

I was very pleased to find that the Cav pipe fitted perfectly inside the jetex pipe ! :

Tom

Sorted the manifold studs out now, turbo back on. Fitted a new water return pipe as well.
Just got to pick up some seals for the thermostat/housing so that can go back on soon. Also need to repair the oil feed pipe as half of the crimp on the braided hose has corroded away :( .

Gander
01-11-2004, 01:49 PM
Lol I would of never guessed where it came from! How deep it it?
Make sure you slosh about a litre of petrol around the inside to clean out any oil and muck. I did that to mine and a fair amount of oil came out, which i then filtered and chucked in my sisters car:p

Really nice setup there. I want to see this finished.

But only a doubt.. how you will put this big intercooler in front of Astra Mk2? I try put big intercooler in front of my Astra and its really hard to put. You will put it inside of pumper, or in space of bumper to car cage? How you will pass the hoses from intercooler? In the radiator of mine, don't have space in left or right sides..only exit that i saw, is removing the foglights, and pass the hoses from bumper, to wheel box..

cheers,

Matheus S. Almeida

We started removing the engine today, at last lol,

I took a few pics but they`ve turned out crap because of the poor lighting in the workshop :(

Badassastra came along to give me hand ( much appreciated fella :) ), didnt take us long really and we managed to take the engine out, leaving the gearbox in.

Should have loads of better pics tomorow, when we put the LET in, after cleaning up the bay.

What tests can you do to a c20xe to see if it is borked?

Its all sorted now and running, making all the right noises and the exhaust is no louder then it was before ! Just has a really nice burble to it http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I used the Cav radiator and although its a bit of a squeeze, it does all fit nicely. No clearance problems regarding the turbo and rad, plenty of room there. I`m also using a frontera intercooler, whick fits very good as well. Just need to find a slim fan now.

Did`nt even tap tap when we started it up , even tho its been stood for a few months http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/eek.gif

Ive got the ECU light sorted now thanks to AndyK off Migweb.

Its still Idling too high and Ive tried 3 ICVs, and its still the same

Still its a BIG improvement over the XE, much faster :D

Got a few little jobs to do on it this week end so might have a few more pics.

Tom

Did a bit today, first up was a quick oil and filter change along with a new fuel filter. Then I Lagged the steel boost pipe from IC to the tophat with some heat reflective sleeving that I got from RallyDesign. The pipe is really close the bottom rad hose and also the P/S pipe, so it was absorbing a fair bit of heat. It was warmer than the intercooler lol.

http://img56.exs.cx/img56/9681/boostp19mj.jpg

Next I fitted this superslim Spal rad fan that I got off Ebay. Im also going to make up a heatshield for it as it does geta bit warm being a close to the turbo. I will wire in an override switch for it too.

http://img56.exs.cx/img56/5462/fan17uu.jpg

Finally I fitted new OMP 3 point harnesses as my old sparco ones would not stay adjusted and kept going slack

No its seems to be just on of those things , lol, is seems ok when its wamed up fully.

Gander
25-01-2005, 04:43 PM
I may be way off here as the problem rectifies its self when warm but have you checked:
1. The screw on the accelrator pedal, you can screw it in and out to adjust its position, screw it in too much and it will start to open the trottle.
2. Is the throttle stop wound in enought, It could be out to far preventing the throttle from fully closing.
3. On the throttle is the accelerator cable too far back? It may be opening the throttle slightly.
4. Is there an obsticle in the throttle body itself preventing it from fully closing?
5. Check ALL you induction piping it could be that a join between a hose and pipe is expanding when hot forming a seal.

Opinions welcome.

As well as being 4.5kgs lighter per wheel than my old ones, they are a better offset (ET45) to http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

Not bad for £300 brand new ! http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif

Know what you mean about the vents being there for a purpose, but Ive not had any probs upto now.

Its one Regal do, its 50mm internal bore as apposed to 40mm of the standard one.

Much better internal finish to it as well, and the turbo cover still fits so its all underneath looking much neater. ;)

Some more :

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b302/TomGTE/gte11.jpg

Even more lol, now a massive box section that wont be going anywhere ;)

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b302/TomGTE/gte13.jpg

Treated and painted up:

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b302/TomGTE/gte15.jpg

Close up of the box:

Fitted a cav turbo master cylinder and new pipes whilst I was at it:

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b302/TomGTE/gte17.jpg
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b302/TomGTE/gte18.jpg

After doing this Id strongly advise anyone whos doing an engine swap or has the engine out for whatever reason to thoroughly check the rack mounting area.

Engine and box are back in, all thats left to do are the drive shafts, box oil, bleed the brakes, coolant, rad and fan and few other bits.

Im looking forward to driving her again v soon (rally)

Cant say for certain about the servos but I would of thought that mk3 astra, cavs and calibra ones would be similar.

Same for the master cylinders, I fitted the turbo one as it has a bigger piston so will give a better feel with the 4 pot brakes I have ;)

Cheers Sipo, Wasnt looking forward to welding to be honest but I just went for it and its now all solid :Banane44:

looking good Tom!

Do you know which output on the Cav turbo master cylinder is for the front and which is for the rear brakes?
I think the front output is the one furthest from the servo when the cylinder is bolted upto it, only because the pipes have a large union on which matches the large union of the front output pipes from the ABS pump.

Been for a drive in it today and once the new rear pads had bedded in the pedal is lot better than before, its nice n sharp now.

It didnt struggle as such before, it just didnt have a nice feel to the pedal, there was too much movement before anything happened !

Finally got to the bottom of the idle speed issues that Its been having.

I fitted a brand new thermostat as I found that the old one was stuck partially open, should of clocked this sooner as I wondered why it would never get out of the blue on the digi dash lol DOH !

Now it warms up much quicker and runs at one blue and two yellows, and I now have a proper hot heater.

Also fitted a new coolant temp sensor for good measure, I made sure that I got a genuine bosch one and not a pattern copy one.

It Idles spot on now, it must of been still on the cold start map as it was taking ages to warm up. It seems to drive better now too.

The revs still jump up when I first start it up though, dont know if its ment to be like that or not, any LET owners do the same ?

Think the CO is wrong as last year it was 0.65% but Ive since raised the fuel pressure up to 3.5 bar so I was expecting it to be higher.

Just to compare heres the results from last 2 years:

2005:

Lambda: 1.049
% Vol CO: 0.59
ppm Vol HC: 172
% Vol CO2: 13.6
% Vol O2: 1.52

2006:

Lambda: 1.022
% Vol CO: 0.65
ppm Vol HC: 266
% Vol CO2: 13.9
% Vol O2: 1.10

2007:

Lambda: 1.026
% Vol CO: 0.35
ppm Vol HC: 201
% Vol CO2: 14.28
% Vol O2: 1.00

2.5" stainless flexi joint, Tight 90dg bend and two lambda bosses:
