  • Mk3 GSi

Finally found another car...this time went for a mk3 GSi as I've always liked them and you can pick up the late 97 versions for next to nothing so they make a good base as they are well spec'd and easy to swap engines later on when I get bored. Found one with 115k for 800 quid. It's a bit rough round the edges but solid underneath and the X20XEV is not a bad engine to be honest...not the quickest but nippy enough and gives decent MPG. I managed to lose a mirror on the way home though...it was loose but me being me couldn't leave it alone and ended up making it worse lol...it was last seen bouncing down the hard shoulder of the M18. The only mechanical work needed for now is to replace the suspension top mounts, the previous owner fitted new shocks, springs, bottom arms, track rod ends and anti roll bar links but refitted shagged top mounts. Replacement ones are only 17 quid for the pair so it's no big problem (...just one of those jobs I can never be arsed to do lol)

    Anyway, pics...

First job was to give it a clean inside and out including wet-vaccing the interior and machine polishing it to see what condition the paint is in. As it happens it's got something on every panel apart from the roof so will be getting a respray later on...for now I've gone round touching in the scratches and chips and flatting and polishing them to take the edge off of them. The interior came up clean but is let down by fag burns so not sure what I'll be doing about that.

Long term plan is to go the OE+ route with it as I want to keep it semi-original just use GM bits...maybe even swap the XEV for a Saab 2.0 turbo but that's a while off yet, in the meantime I'll just be tidying it up. First thing I've bought is a replacement for the steering wheel as I can't stand the rubber airbag wheel and I'm not even sure if it works, plus this car will get used on track from time to time. Bought this from Steve84, it's near mint with no scuffs or marks on it so will be going on once the suspension and tracking sorted

It's full of Vauxhall "chucked together at the last minute" features...it is basically a sport with GSi bumpers and loads of Irmscher bits. I'll be fitting a ph1 GSi bonnet but not made my mind up about the skirts yet, I think it needs them though as the Irmscher skirts don't go with the lines on the bumpers. As you said it's a good base and there are loads of different options I can use for the engine...most of which can be fitted in a weekend and for less than 500 quid

Excellent car for the money Baz, as you say, needs tidying but looks fundamentally sound. There's an extra switch on the heater panel that my Mk3 doesn't have, does it have air con as well? The X20XEV isn't half as bad as people make out, it's just the appalling Siemens engine management it's saddled with (particularly cam and crank sensors), but as long as you keep a spare of each available they're fine. A mate has had an XEV Calibra for several years now and apart from a new crank sensor it's been fine over 60,000 miles, he doesn't half abuse it too...

It's a weird spec...It's got aircon and trip computer but manual mirrors and a fixed steering column. The engine is quite good and I did toy with the idea of doing some tuning to that but getting bits is quite expensive from what I've seen...a 4 branch manifold is over £300. It can stay as it is for a while anyway. It'll be getting my BK299's for now when I get them repainted as I don't like the ones that are on it

Never removed an airbag steering wheel..it'll either go well or I'll end with a broken nose. A mate at work told me about someone attempting to repair an airbag on a Clio when the warning light kept coming on, he was trying to solder 2 wires but made contact, set the airbag off and to this day has a soldering iron shaped scar between his eyes

                        Re: Mk3 GSi

Looks like a tw@t did the last bit of work on this car...the clunk from the suspension was down to the damper cap not being screwed in properly and the damper was rattling round in the leg also the bearings were the wrong ones. The ones that were fitted were too big and catching. Luckily Pembo had a pair that's been sat in his shed for the last few years. Anyway, all done now and drives perfect so next job is sort the tracking as the steering wheel's on the p*ss

Had a bit of sun so managed to get a pic of the car after I machine polished it...

...looks a lot better than it is though lol

Agreed, I wondered what the hell I'd done to my seat! Always used the little plastic "safety fork" thing ever since, as long as it's still taped in place...

Car's looking very good Baz, nice colour in the sunshine. Glad to see the Vauxhall badge has gone back on the front, looks much better for that alone!
