Interior looks in decent condition. Your inlet manifold is different to mine though
Edit: your inlet manifold is the same. I was expecting to see a ridged top part but that's the TB. It's been a long day at work and a long drive home...

Agreed. It's nowhere near as quick as the gte and doesnt have the guts either which is suprising as they have similar bhp etc on paper (when it's going lol) but corners far better. It has black diamond drilled/grooved disks all round and greenstuff pads so it stops on a dime!(pug) unlike gte :D

Yes my brother did try selling it a few times on ebay, but has now given it to me to restore it totally over the winter. I must say it looks better in the pics than it is, mostly small fiddly things that need doing but for a 87' F reg there's not a spot of rust anywhere!
Yes will keep updating this thread with the gte's progress..

Is that a scratch on the car bumper or just a sweat stain?
I gotta say it was pretty surreal seeing my engine in Wales on a monitor in the office what seemed like moments after you guys waking me up this morning. ...
I am truly sleep deprived.. I think I had 2 hours after working Friday night..
You's look knackered in those photos .. heheh, I thought it might be harder getting it back out again..
I just hope it is all worthwhile in the end..

Yeah just seen that mark in the photo - will check the bumper today :(
Yes dan did look knackered in the pics lol
Will be worthwhile, I'll tidy up this one now hopefully this week then get it up to the workshop (where the car is) and get it put in - well thats the plan anyway!

I was driving up round your way this weekend. Friday was Glos-Ross-skirt round Hereford on B roads-Kington-Aberystwyth (approx spelling). Then up to Dolgellau.
Monday Dolgellau to Machynlleth. Then 3pm left Machynlleth, 4pm at Newtown, 5pm at Leominster and Gloucester by 6. All great roads too.

Quick run down of the last few days progress,
'New' Engine stripped of all ancillary components and block painted in VHT Matt black paint.
Replacement rocker cover polished up and fitted with new rocker gasket.
Cambelt and waterpump removed and thermostat housing (all of it) removed.
A lot of detective work carried out to see if any physical differences between SE and SER - They're identical (apart from the engine code :p )
Spent most of the afternoon resetting the valve clearances on a 1.3 Fiesta  (with no manual....)
Just having a quick sit down before I go back out!

Right then quick update (of last few days)-
1. Old core plugs removed ( ) ready for the new ones
2. Block is now all painted
3. Rocker cover polished and refitted
4. Top end all cleaned up
5. Various new seals & gaskets fitted
6. New spark plugs fitted
7. Oil valve removed/cleaned and refitted
8. New rotor arm fitted
Jobs still left to do -
1. Fit new core plugs
2. Refit engine mount & bracket
3. Test and refit starter motor
4. Refit PAS pump and mounting
5. Fit new water pump
6. Fit all new belts
7. Rebuild Inlet manifold/TB and Injectors/Rail using new gaskets
8. Renew sump gasket
Probably more things left to do but that's all that comes to mind at the moment.
I'm enjoying the project so far and have not had any real problems (as yet)
Sorry no progress pics as digi-cam has now died, will have to get around to borrowing one soon.

Hi m8.. the pug is nowhere as quick compared to the astra 8v? as the pug has more bhp and it's lighter as far as i know. good luck in your project m8, keep us posted.

Nah the 1.9 GTi's are 124 or something bhp mate, yes it's lighter but no where near as solid on he road (scary at speed really) as the 8v. The gte is also a very light car 900 odd kgs iirc (someone correct me :D )
Straight line on private test track my 8v beat the gti...(two months ago)
Perhaps it was all down to the driver who knows.....

When i had my ex nova gte.. it use to scare me on high speed's too... unlike the astra. It feel's solid. I enjoyed every single bit when i was doing up the 16v, anyways good luck m8, hope all goes well.

All french cars are known for their roadholding abilities! and the 205 is a good example! its not what car you are driving! its hoe well you know the car and how able you are to play with the handling! a good driver who gets used to a crap handling car would go round corners way faster than an average driver in a very good handling car!
The 205 would not beat the Gte at power but on handling im sure the 205 is way ahead!

I've got an engine stand but to use it I'd have to remove gearbox - which I don't need to do so have left it on blocks.
Pics make it seem on the floor but it's stood on wooden blocks..
P.S with the engine crane 3 miles away at my other garage how would I lift this engine up to secure it to the stand on my own?? ;)

Talk about bollock god damn freezing today..
I gave up after three hours - hands were numb and was like I had two left hands trying to work on the car  lol
Left the car as is, no bonnet, no front wheels, no bumper, up high on stands and pisd off home lol
Looks like towing the GTE (loads) and braking with no servo assistance has fecked my n/s caliper - brake fluid dripping all out from it..

Well by now when it's being towed the brake pedal is rock solid - so they'll need bleeding now I guess, once engine is in and running
Going back up today to carry on - well I'll see how long I can last in the freezing cold..
So why have you been messing around with the loom then?

Started the tedious job of fitting the new suspension bushes, balljoints, link bushes etc today. God I hate doing these sort of jobs, taken me ages today to get hardly anything done, every nut and bolt ball achingly tight and plenty of cut knuckles as well.
Nothing worse than being halfway through a job and realising that you don't have the right tools (27mm hub nut in a deep socket) so I couldn't undo those today - typical..
Anyway everyday spent on the car improves it, however slight so I shall carry on with it...
Astra Dan

looks like some good work. Probably one of the the best things you can do to a MK2, freshen up the front suspension. Costs feck all to.
Dont know why you say thats not that tidy, looks pretty damn clean to me!
Also get some arch liners if you dont have any, unless you dont value your inner wings and front bumper mounts:D
Nice one matey!

I'll bring you an arch liner up when I come over. It's possibly got small holes in I think where it's had mudflaps fitted, but it might be OK. Better than nothing anyway.
Unless you want to buy a new one. About £13 IIRC.

Got the pump off - all good, however the cambelt has been stripped. My fault as I'd fitted a rounded toothed belt to a square toothed sprocket :duh:
Havent foundout what is causing the grinding noise though, was 99% sure it would be the pump bearings..
you sure its not something simple like the belt catching on the plastic guard?
rhydgte
26-03-2006, 10:56 AM
Well the belt was catching the cover so I modified it slightly :)
However before I removed everything with engine running and cover off the belt keeps being pulled slowly off the top pulley as if it's not running true if that makes sense?
I'd stop the engine push the belt well back on to the top pulley and start it again and it will pull the belt back out until about 3mm of the belt is sitting proud of the pulley
Gteman
26-03-2006, 01:05 PM
Not having much luck m8ty are you :(
Are you sure the water pump is ok ? Have you looked at the pulley with the engine running ?
Is the belt tension tight enough ?
rhydgte
26-03-2006, 01:25 PM
No lol I never have much luck with cars!
The water pump spins freely and there is no side to side movement in the pump pulley so assume bearings are fine..

Weather still poor, but I managed to get some more undersealing done today, and sprayed up the plates and brackets which make up the fuel pump/filter mounting. I will get this reassembled and refitted tomorrow now, once dry.
Still havent got the tank off yet :duh: but that'll be next for a nice clean up and respray.
Then all rubber fuel hoses and clamps will be getting replaced on it's refitting.
Gearbox gaskets arrived today so once I find a suitable replacement driveshaft (equal length jobbie) I'll get and drain the box and fit the new gaskets.
