The fingers are getting twitchy and the credit card is burning a hole in my pocket so I've started "playing" with the GTE.
1.
Strutbrace - After all the warning about them (crash damage), I made an Ebay purchase for the huge sum of £15.05. The cardboard had'nt touched the floor by the time I'd fitted it.
Not driven it yet though will post my findings later.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/baileydog/strutbrace001.jpg
Not happy with just 2 bolts holding the brace in place but the engineers know more than me (I hope).
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/baileydog/strutbrace002.jpg
How tight should the center adjuster be?
dethstar

£15 bargain, looks quite well made too.
Are the nuts actually holding it on? is that a recessed hole? cant really tell from the photos, as long as it and the strut are still secure.
Mine hasn't got an adjuster but i would say loosen it, park it up on a flat level bit of ground, and do it up until there is no play. After all it does what it says on the tin braces the struts stop them flexing towards or away from each other.
Hope my relative ramble helps a little. Someone should hopefully back me up on the adjustment tho.

Not very tight, just up so that it stops the turrets moving in. Is that nut right? Looks like it's pulled through!
And that brace looks really nice - was that new?

I bought a omp strut brace for my cabrio and noticed the difference straight away , It felt a lot tighter on the corners :D Shame it wont fit the valver as it hits the afm , Mines red even though the flash made it look orange  looks like this on the 8v :D ....

The holes are a little off, I might remove it and trim them a little so the nuts sit flush.
Did feel a little diffirence, tighter at low speeds. Did want to push it, I've not much faith in my mechanical abilities.
And that brace looks really nice - was that new?
Yes, no marks on it what so ever. The box was heavier than the brace! Looks sooo nice.

Nice one. Just a one off for sale?
I emailed the fellow. He's having a clear out of crap in his loft, only got the one.
Anyway, project 2.
After reading various posts on MIG (by richie00boy), here and Car Audio Direct.com, have choosen a different direction with the ICE. Bass in the boot and custom door builds up front all run off 1 big amp for ease.
I'll make my own door pods encorporating the door pockets and 6 1/2" components, trimmed with the same colour vinyl as the top of the door cards, with the tweeters mounted in the standard dash holes.
I'll put my current shelf with speakers up for swap when I reglue the cloth down as it's started to lift off.

After a natter with the guy at Mcdee's, with his shiney rims, I thought it was about time I sorted mine out.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/baileydog/repaint001.jpg
First looked into getting the whole wheel refurbished but the best quote I got was £50 a corner, without doing the centre caps  Sod that, I could get new alloys and tyres off ebay for that!
So popped over to a little known paint shop hidden in a corner of Peterborough for a paint-match and can service. Out came the swotches, colour choosen, crisp tenner exhanged, and off home to spray the garage silver.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/baileydog/repaint003.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/baileydog/repaint004.jpg
The colour is a bit off but I'm pleased with the finish.

23-09-2005, 11:51 AM
You just did the centre caps? I know a good place nearish me that does a whole wheel refurb for about £30 per wheel, and they are good. I would only get wheels powder coated as paint isn't tough enough.
After doing a wheel myself I also wouldn't refurb a full set of wheels myself if they were bubbling much, as it's hard work and as said above paint is rubbish and you save not that much when I can get them done for £30 each.
Tony K
23-09-2005, 01:18 PM
You just did the centre caps?
Just the caps m8. A lot of the places I rang would only do the alloy, which seemed silly considering that the cap is 50% of the wheel.
I'm happy with what I've done. If I've still got the car in a couple of years, I've probly get them professionally refurbed.
Tony K

MOT'd yesterday.
Headlights needed adjusting (probly moved when I fitted the quads), number plate light not working (DIY job, new bulb and clean contacts) and a wobbly offside ball joint. £65 notes in all.:)
They had the car for a few days (they were busy) so I've been using the misses convertible for a roundabout. A right dog of a 1.6, sooo heavy, but she does'nt need a fast car just motor to pose in (she likes getting her top off  ).
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/baileydog/S4010044.jpg
It's been quite nice not having a car, the money has lasted a little longer, not had to worry about some little shit trying to nick it. You think "do I need a car?", but after 5 minutes I start looking for a new one. I have the bug.

dead right. it shouldnt be adjusted so it pulls or pushes the turrest apart at rest.

With the New Year looming I thought is was about time to sort out the little problems that are starting to drive me mad. Here’s an overview of what I need doing.
I’m getting a “droning” noise from the rear?
Starting from cold, there’s an intermittent clicking noise, (mostly happens more when you turn the steering). It disappears after 5 minutes.
The heater fan is starting to make a “weebling” noise.
I don’t get much heat on cold mornings from the heater, warm air only. The digidash shows one light on the thermostat. It warming up fine in traffic just not on my daily journey up and down the A1. Is the cooling system too efficient?
Rust on the nearside arch. I’m looking into that one in January.
I either need new tyres; do I keep the same size (185/65/14)?
The alloys centre caps are great but the rest of the alloys are crap.
I’ve been looking for a project car, something cheap I can cut my teeth on now I’ve got my garage back. I’d like a van or estate (Asrtrasteve’s cornered that market at the moment). A second car so I can take the GTE off the road to get the bits done. I just can't find one near me.
found in Essex but I can't get there before the auction finishes.

failing that (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4598864897&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT)
Father Christmas should be being me some 17cm speakers for my pod project (If not the birthday fairy will).
Of late I’ve been feeling “why should I bother with it, just get something else”. Hopefully if I get the above done I’ll love it again.

With heavy heart, I've decided to sell the old girl for something newer. Got a few jobs to do before I do though.
Found a large 'bullet hole' in the N/S headlight, new light then. Might replace both just to tidy the front end up.
I noticed that the mechanic hadn’t fitted the skirt right so I'll have to come off and refitted.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/baileydog/SKIRT.jpg
Also I found this. :furious3:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/baileydog/HOLE.jpg
He hadn’t move the carpet when he welded up a hole and sprayed over the burned bit to hide the damage. Not sure whether I should leave it or replace the whole carpet.
I need to remove the strut brace, brand new leather steering wheel, and the Irmscher rear lights (I don’t suppose anyone other than a member knows what they are). The ICE I'll use as a negotiating point when I come to sell her. I do have a garage full of bit and bobs so I'll post them up to see if anyone needs anything.
I'll have the car up on ramps this week and give her a going over with a wire brush and under seal for good measure and I might even tidy up the arch if I’ll feeling brave.
After a deep clean and finding something to replace her with, she be ready for sale.

Unless you want better reliability etc from a newer car then I don't really see the point in having body work done in order to sell it.
If you are going to neaten it up you surely may as well keep it.
I'm sure we had this conversation at Ace.
Though maybe it will be 'refreshing' to own / drive something newer?? (Not that I would know as my Jplate Valver is the newest car I've owned)
There are other cars than the MK2 Astra - but not for me though.
Just hopefully you won't regret selling it if you end up with a newer Saxo

Tony, what about mothballing it in a garage and using it just as a fun car? Classic limited mileage insurance (especially at your age ;) ) should be peanuts? Then get another newer car to rag during the week and use the GTE as a weekend car?
Personally, I can see the time when I shall stop using my GTE as a daily drive and get something else to commute in. And then use the GTE at weekends....

trying to get a chevette as the daily driver!! :D
You are a mad man Mr K! A "new" car that looks the same as everyone elses motor will depress you after a while. Driving my daily drive bores the hell out of me, yet I never got bored of driving the GTE, Im sure many other cars would offer this, but for the money the GTE is just so little money for so much fun. I hope the tidy valver pops up for you Tony, would be a shame to see ya drift off into the internet darkness. Plus what would the events be if you and me werent the ultra reliable ones :D

I want to second what sipo says mate, you've been an asset to this club and I hope that while the GTE doesnt meet your needs anymore you stick around, hopefully with a minty 16v:D
I can see the appeal of a nice modern car tbh, but I would absolutly have to have something old to tinker with.

With Mel's permission, I won a carpet set for a GTE off a nice fellow, Tim, in St Neots to replace the damaged section. Whilst I was there, he asked if I needed a N/S headlight. OMG! His hand was promptly removed with headlight attached, and now I'm a happy bunny. £4.20 for a nights shopping.

Tim has a mint H-reg red 8V sitting in his garage waiting to be dragged out and cleaned. I've passed on the sites details so hopefully we'll be seeing him soon.

I've been looking for a while for something that matches the GTE for perfomance, looks, and has a good following for about £3000. I missed out on a red GTE convertible last week for £800. Could have XE'd and cleaned it up a treat (not me though). Not seen anything less yet.

How about trying to convince the Marketing department for Tesco to restore your car and make it into a tastefull rolling advert?
My dad had a friend that used to buy mini's back in the 70's for such purposes as th marketing companies would pay for a full respray after the alloted time that the car needed the ad.

So, the news is good.
For both arches replaced, bit & bods, and a full respray - £1100.
I've got the car booked in for April as he wants the rust to run its course over the winter, then when the good weather has arrived, everything's dried out he can make a good job of removing the all the rusty bits. Other bit are a little rust on the boot lid where the spoiler is attached, a little knock to the edge of the bonnet where it looks like some one has closed it on the support arm(??) and a few other little dents.
The guy, Kristian, has done work for the mother-in-law and on Nicoles 114GSI (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/baileydog/RES03047-1.jpg) so I'm happy with the quality of his work. He's looking forward to working on the GTE and getting it ready for summer 2007 show season.
So it looks like I'll be keeping the old girl, I've made a small list of thing I'd like to do.
1. Refurbish the alloys.
2. New battery and earth leads.
3. Strip out the ICE and start again. (mmm door pods)
4. Place worn suspension parts and purchase AVO suspension (they better be doing a discount with all this business they getting of us :applause: )
5. Fit my BRAND NEW GTE leather steering wheel.
6. Convince Mel to sell me the grey GTE parcel shelf.
7. New alarm.
8. Fix/replace the sunroof
9. Fix/replace/hit with hammer the check control.
10. Replace B pillar stickers.
11. Clean up the engine (not sure how yet)
12. S/S exhaust.
13. 16v brakes.
14. Anything else I think of.
I'll be picking brains soon, so thanks in advance guys.

I picked up an AFM from Alex over the weekend to replace my damaged one. Someone had used a bolt that was too long for a hole on the side so it had pushed through into the air passage, letting in unmetered air. I plugged the hole knowing that sooner or later a replacement would pop up.
The AFM was well grubby, and you know me and cleaning things, out with the Autosol!

Yup, I'd missed it too. Also glad you're keeping the old girl and that she's going to get the right attention. I've got a lot of respect for someone that's recommending doing the work at a sensible time of year, as in my opinion it will make quite a difference to the quality of the job, unless he's got all the right spray shop gear with humidity as well as temperature control.

I'm not sure if he does the centre cap, I would doubt it as he powder coats which needs heat to cure. The caps could be painted quite easily by yourself, just need to match the colour which might not be that hard really.
Powder coating is a lot tougher than paint for the wheels. I did a wheel myself and said I'd never do it again. It's hardish work and the result is not that durable.

Whilst cleaning today I thought I'd experiment with the technique I used on Addz car last summer (http://www.astra-mk2.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7511&highlight=uxbridge). I used Autoglym polish or t-cut on the lower bumper trims and them applied a coat of their plastic bumper snot. I was well happy with the results.

New oil rad and all the pipework to the filter, both drive shaft gaiters, full service, and 4 tons of bird sh1t.
Good to get her back though, been using the mother-in-laws Suzuki Alto. 1000cc's of Jap power to do such things as pedestrian traffic light racing, having to book an appointment to overtake, and being psychic when using the brakes. Shouldn't grumble really, it got me to work for a week.
On the up side, got a K&N panel filter for £10 off the 'bay. Nice. :Banane44:

£340 not too bad really esp when you consider that labour takes up a fair percentage.
Plus now you know its done. I take it that you are having the body work done and still going to keep it for the forseable future?

While she's in the shop I've not been sitting on my hands, especially since PVS is round the corner.
I've ordered a complete set of NS B/C pillar stickers for templates so I can make my own. I've ordered Blackboard vinyl from a company Harvey found, which is similar to the OE vinyl used by Vaux. I should have enough to make a couple of sets so watch this space.
I've found a place near Spalding, Wheelrite, who'll be refurbing my alloys just as soon as I get the car back, quoting £40-50 per wheel depending on what I want. I need to either find 2 more GTE alloys to make a set or get some wheels to replace mine while they're being done. I'm sure the local breakers will be able to help.
Harvey

He's going to keep it an extra week to get a man in to sort out a few small dents in the doors and spray the B/C pillar stickers with textured paint, saving me a job with stickers. I've also got a new set of trims for the front bumper he'll be fitting for me n/w too.

Tony I can get the wheels done for £30 each, top job powder coating. You are welcome to visit here to make the journey easier. Also have a look at md28 posts as he found a company that does collection and is a similar price.
I think painting the black bits on the pillars is a far better idea than vinyl, it just shrinks and cracks.

To say I'm pleased with the finish would be an understatement. 6 coats of red, 2 1/5 litres of underseal in the arches, new front bumper trims (thanks Mel), painted B/C pillars, doors de-dented, side skirts filled properly, and new GTE & griffin stickers. Plus he gave me £100 back as the wonky front number plate fell off when I poked it. (It was to be his trainees bonus if he did a good job on my motor, DUH!)

Tony do you have the usual creaking noise assosiated with mk2 astra door cards?
All of mine have had i'll fitting door cards - regardless of getting new clips etc etc.
I was just wondering if the weight of the pods would make it worse. I've got some spare 13 cm speakers that I may do a copy cat of your pods (or maybe you would like to be commisioned to do some for billing).

I'm not worried about the weight issue as I have some long screws to fit through the back of the pod, into the door. This will help with both the weight and bass.
Commissions are happily received at a price.

Install day!
After testing I decided to use the tweeters instead of the 4" already fitted, they were just louder and crisper when run though the crossover. I'd knocked up a couple of speaker shaped holders with a hole for the tweeter i-mount ring for a nice stable platform. They slotted straight in thought next time I'll use 5mm instead of 12mm MDF as I had to break off the top to clips on the grill to lay flush.

I've been in a state of blissful ignorance about my MOT with the thought of it being due in October. I know it needs a CV boot and a rollbar bush but I'll have it booked in before the due date, might even get the exhaust fitted.
I'll just check the service history for the exact date.....

I think they cost me about £30-40 to make. There's a how-to in the member section. I think the 4-door pockets are a little shorter but that shouldn't make a difference.
Glad it wasn't to bad. what's on the advisory list though?

Advisories are so subjective though.
I had two different MOT's (one fail/one pass) and different advisories. The passing MOT sheet quoted "Oil Leak - Sump"
HAHAHA (thatwasgay)
Brett
13-09-2007, 06:47 PM
Yeah, all MOTs are down to the individual tester. If they are to strict assume they dont like older cars and go elsewhere IMHO.

Mo money, no sense lead me to Ebay.de (WWW.ebay.de) to see what bargains there were to be had over the drink. Not 5 minutes of looking found 3 sellers who'd accept Paypal each selling a set of Irmscher rear lights.
A quick email to all the sellers to confirm they're happy to post to the UK and get a quote for delivery. One of the light seller offered me a buy-now price of 60e delivered (£42) but I managed to knock him down £10 before saying yes.
Mine (again)
http://i18.ebayimg.com/07/i/000/b8/8f/3b18_1.JPG
I gave him the site address to say hi as he drives a Kadett GSI 16v, so he'd be more than welcomed. He's also looking out for any other bits and pieces that might appeal.
I also found a set of Irmscher 15"s as featured in the Kadett/Astra Irmscher catalogue. (http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://jpf.webzdarma.cz/IMAGES/kadett_irmscher3.jpg&imgrefurl=http://jpf.webzdarma.cz/Irmscher.html&h=1326&w=1136&sz=184&tbnid=Vp7MY7xiRtVjSM:&tbnh=150&tbnw=128&hl=en&start=63&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dirmscher%26start%3D60%26svnum%3D10%26 hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-GB:official%26sa%3DN) Another email is sent to confirm postage. The alloys have an ET of 42, so if there's an issue with rubbing, the cars going for a touch up before the 2008 show season, I'll get the arches rolled while it's in. Back to the auction, and a last minute bid secures the alloys for a tasty 105e delivered (£70). Mega chuft!
Mine too!

The car's running super sweet at the mo with the full S/S exhaust. I love the quiet burble noise, it makes the car feel completely different.

Of course you can now see my manky disks and calipers, which will be sorted in the new year. I did give the drums a brush and coat of Hammerite to brighten them up but the front will have to wait.
A quick blast to the garage for a pressure test showed up a few things.
- More tyre noise
- More grip, less roll.
- Can now see the rusty wheel bolts (suggestions please).
- Felt a little quicker off the mark though I put the down to the clean car affect.
Overall, I'm happy with the look.

First on the rollers, I looked on nervously as she was bolted on and ran up to the limiter. I was happy with the results though the guy did say the torque would have been better if it wasn't for the restrictive airbox.

Another project, 8 months too early but there nothing wrong with being keen. I've cleared the garage out to see if the GTE fits, hopefully I'll be able to put her in hibernation over next winter.

My KA only just fitted in my last garage so I'm not sure it'll go but its worth a go. A the very least the garage has had a tidy.

Been speaking to Mark F about the inlet side of the engine since he's running the Irmscher inlet plus other mods. One idea I liked the sound of was to remove a baffle round the inlet to the AFM to allow a smoother airflow. So to work I went.
Yuk, 5000 mile of shite in the top corner due to me forgetting to replace the airbox/bumper pipe. Might clean it one day.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/baileydog/SSA56296.jpg
Here's the baffle.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/baileydog/SSA56297.jpg
Using a hammer drill like a large, unwieldy dremel, I managed to remove the plastic and smooth the edges. A sand and clean later, and it's ready to go on the car.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/baileydog/SSA56305.jpg
No testing tonight but I'm off to Milton Keynes tomorrow so we'll see if there's any difference.

Intersting. Looks like a good mod but makes you wonder why they put it there in the first place.
Mark F
24-01-2008, 10:45 PM
That's it Tony!...just like the one on my car!:)
Why was it there in the first place? Manufacturers usually put baffles and restrictions in the induction pipes to reduce induction noise. In the worst cases such as 1.6 Corsa GSi they were also put in to de-tune or limit the emissions of the engine!
Frisco
24-01-2008, 10:48 PM
It acts the same as a trumpet on a carb. The air doesnt like going round right angles, it creates drag and effectively makes the inlet to the AFM smaller.
The trumpet has radiused (is that even a word!) edges which allow for smooth full bore airflow
richie00boy
24-01-2008, 10:51 PM
So you think this mod will not improve power? There is no real radius to what was there, and certainly no angled scoop type setup.
Frisco
24-01-2008, 11:01 PM
It wasn't the best design of trumpet ill say that. Most standard attempts are more tapered but there was rounded edges on it.
I cant see any improvement being made by this. I have some diagrams of the effects of different trumpet designs on airflow, ill have a rummage around.
DarrenH
24-01-2008, 11:06 PM
it probably straightens air flow so its linear and more "recordable" as it goes through the airflow meter trap.
i'm kind of swaying towards frisco. introducing a sharp corner for air to travel round is one of the cardinal sins for induction tuning.
need to be thinking along the lines of keeping flow as straight as possible, reducing pressure loss (Restrictions to flow) and increasing air density (keeping it cold)
Frisco
24-01-2008, 11:25 PM
This is the effect of the most basic radius and square inlets
http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/2899/squaretrumpetzn1.jpg
You can see the restriction caused by the dead air when the airflow lifts off at the corner
http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/7217/radiustrumpet2fj9.jpg
Even a basic radius on the inlet allows for a more stable flow
A tapered trumpet is better still
Mark F

I agree that trumpets are a must have on throttle bodies and that you can even tune them according to how long they are!
With regards to the above air box mod it was designed and used by the late Bill Blydenstein and I kind of trust his experience! Courtenays also must have come to the same conclusion as they also offered the same modification. It is also common mod on the Astra G airbox.
Its also worth remembering that the AFM has a hinged flap rather than a butterfly, which probably wouldnt benifit from the symetrical airflow that a trumpet would give to a butterfly valve.
All IMHO of course!

Symetrical flow or not sharp edges reduce the flow and cause turbulance. The effect is the same be it on carbs/throttle bodies or just an airbox.
Still in normal driving daily IMO there would be little or no noticable difference at all either way.

So to bring this one to a close, after a day of various driving conditions, the car did feel livelier at low revs, when pulling way from roundabouts and junctions you noticed it most.
I'll put this down to all 3 things I did, the box mod, cleaning out the AFM, and disconnecting the air box pipe from the front bumper to draw air from the wheel arch.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/baileydog/SSA56317.jpg
I will revisit the air box to clean the edges up (the tool's I used were pretty crap), and fit a larger air box/bumper pipe (maybe attach it to the bottom of the front bumper).

Got the day off so I'm servicing and giving her a good clean as the last proper buff was January for the RR day.
I decided to go for Vauxhall parts this time as I wasn't happy with the quality of the Halfords pattern parts I used last time. So I popped to my local VX dealer to be quoted a lovely £90 for a dizzy cap and £20 for the arm!!! Now I would expect a slap with the price of genuine parts as you're paying for quaity (I hope) but not to be gang banged by the whole Marshall parts dept! Naturally I declined and made haste to Mr Patel's Kebab & motor factors shops in Millfield where I collected the service items, Wynn's engine cleaner, a set of Kerr Neson HT leads, and a chicken tikka naan for a very reasonable £40.
Tyres next week and she'll be ready for Pod!

Spend, spend, spend.
Purchased a JBL GTO 755.6 amp from Ebay for half price. There's a few marks on the shell but I plan to clean it up when the weather turns warm. 6 channels but I'll be bridging it for 3 to run a sub and my front components. It'll be mounted on trimmed MDF and fitted to the back of the rear seat. I need to sort out another set of RCA leads and good quality speaker wire to run for fronts but untill then it'll just be running the box.

Fun in the hot sun. Pulled into Tesco after sitting in traffic forever and I get the warm smell of anti-freeze and a bright light on my dash. Popped the bonnet to find water running down the back of the engine but could not see where from, so I managed to limp home avoiding all traffic.

I also found a longer rubber connector from a Daewoo Espero 2.0 in case the include ones were too short.

My current VX pipe, as you can see it has a small repair where the rubber has split.

Standard and AM together.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/baileydog/tube/tube4.jpg
No issues with fitting other than having to remove the back airbox fixing screw. I'll knock up a large grommet with a longer bolt to fix it down. A quick run round the block to test showed the car running and idling a little better, probably due to the air track now being airtight.

Gratuitous dirty shot.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/baileydog/SSA57752.jpg
Outstanding from my ICE install was wiring the front components to the 6 channel amp. I found it was cheaper to be a high end amp fitting kit as the speaker wire and phone lead were just as expensive by themselves and as a bonus I'd have enough wire to renew the sub and earth leads.
For ease and because it had to be done, I removed the passenger seat. The wife naturally took this the wrong way and accused me of barring her from the car as her seat was now in the conservatory??? Women!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/baileydog/SSA57754.jpg
This helped me to relocated under the carpet the mass of amp and speaker cable that was already running to the boot. I removed the dash cubby hole to access behind the stereo and N/S crossover. The tweeters have been running -3db as they overpowered the mids but with the amp now powering them they should compliment each other nicely.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/baileydog/SSA57756.jpg
With all wires attached, I replaced the trim and screwed everything back together save the seat as I'll give it a clean whilst it out of the car.
Next on the list was the door pods. I'd made the mistake of cutting the vinyl too close to the edge so it catchs you hand and lifts so that was restuck. I also Dynomat'd the doors and cut a hole in the trim so to allow the speaker to use the door space. As I had some, I also silicon sprayed the window runners for some smooth up & down action.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v679/baileydog/SSA57753.jpg
With everything back together, I spent a little time playing various types of music and found the bass in the front had increased 10 fold. With the system only running the O/S mid, it sounded like the sub was still on! All the front speakers now sound a lot louder and clearer with more punch. Happy days! I just need to set the system up to driving conditions (tyre, road, and exhaust noise) which I'll do on the way to Billing Saturday.
The devastation will continue tomorrow (or today at time of writing).
*Edit*
Had a quick bap over to the garage and noticed engine feedback coming from the O/S speakers. It's looked as though the amp wire was running too close to the ECU and fuse box so a quick reroute and no more whistling.
richie00boy
11-07-2008, 08:54 PM
Tony you shouldn't need to adjust the tweeters as it's still seeing the same tonal balance, just more overall volume.
Which amp wire was giving you problems being near the ECU? Power or signal?
Tony K
12-07-2008, 07:25 AM
The mids are a lot louder now so I think the tweeters needed the boost.
The feedback was coming through a signal wire, amp to crossover.

Mostly all feed back is caused by the alternator, you can purchase a line suppressor which is very good, it worked well on my nova, I also seperated rca leads, remote lines and speaker cabling from and power source by routing them to the contre of the car, but in fairness if you are using the standard loom this can be a problem

Having purchased the GSI, I knock up a list of what I need to do to get the car ready to sell.
1. Remove ICE, purchase new 4" speakers for the dash. I might buy a cheap CD player off Ebay but how many people buy a car and already have a stereo to go in it? (I do)
2. Remove door cards and replace with purchases from Mr G.
3. Renovate the OE alloys and swap.
4. Replace the GS and HB gaiters with the new one I bought yesterday.
5. MOT check over.
6. Book MOT.
7. Pop to Woolies for new boot carpet.
I had a wonderful knocking noise from the front when I turn right. On inspection I find the N/S drop link is missing its top! A trip to the local motor factors and A LOT of swearing later, job done. (Thanks Ian)

I had that, took my old 8v (before it was turbo'd) in to get an oil change done, went down to collect it, and got there just in time to see one of the mechanics drive off at a great rate of knots up the road.
I went ballistic at the manager, as the guy 'testing' it, didn't even have a licence

Yep, it was a new one on me, the manager reckoned they had to test it to check for leaks...I mean, everybody knows that mk2's leak anyway lol
Put it this way, I wasn't fobbed off, and there were a few customers there to witness that he had let the lad drive without a licence, so I expect he lost a few people there ;)

A damp day at Trax saw me returning to the Astra prep, got the standards ready for painting. Check the white lettering, nice!

I had to start one to see how they came out. Used Halfords alloy paint as it looked a good match. Just a couple of coats done, so far, so good.

First one finished tonight. Buffed up with AG paint renovator but I think I need something better to give it some zing. Suggestions?

Second alloy finished, at this rate the car will be ready for Billing 2009!
Noticed I'm missing a center cap but Mr T should be sorting that out if he's remembered.
Took the car out for the first time in 3 weeks, started first time with no silly noises. Felt good to be able to nip about though I only managed to get to 50 by the end of the road where the GSI makes 70. Nice.

OE alloys painted and buffed, just 3 caps to do (IAN!!!). Thought I'd swap them over and give the old girl some TLC but I ran out of light after fitting the wheels, tomorrow then. I'm sure my fans are missing my usual clean car photo's. Check the standard sized tyres, balloons or what! They'll look better after a clean and shine.

Looks spanking sir.
Completely forgot to open the bag today but was within two feet of the centre caps. Will put an elastic bag around my throat tomorrow or something!

With the good weather today, I spent time sorting 2 jobs I needed to sort. The first was the chipping B-pillars. I rang the bodyshop to see what he'd used and where I could get some. He suggested I could use a matt black spray as the chipping was not to serious and could be easily sorted, just make sure I did it on a warm day.

Nice! Theres a tiny bit of over spray but I've sort that when I next clean the car.

Next was to fit the new wiperarms I bought from Billing. No drivers arm so I gave it a blow over since I was painting everything black.

One final note, notice how shiny the car still is. I've not cleaned it in 2 months!
