I thought it was about time I posted some pics of my girlfriends SRi. I made her buy it as it was to good to miss and I already had a number of cars registed in my name at the time. It was bought in Feb 2005 with 28K on the clock and it was originally a dealer owned car which was then bought by an old gentleman who owner it for about 11 years. He had it serviced at Vauxhall ever year and did less than 1K each year. My mate then bough it from him back in late 2001 with 19K on the clocks, the old chap was advised by his doctor he couldn't drive any longer.

I have kept it as stock as possible but with the addition of PAS from my GTE and OE front fogs as the looms are already in place. It's just sailed through it's MOT this morning with no problems. It's now our daily runner along with my recently purchased mk2 Starmist with 130K under it's belt.

Enjoy:

The car was originally registered new at Smiths of Ilkeston about 2 miles from where I live and it's been local to the area ever since, apart from when my mate had it as he lives in Chesterfield. It's just ticked over 34K yesterday after a trip to my mates who lives in North Wales. We have no plans to do any mods. Its still got the original dealer rear window sticker and tax discs holder. I've even got the original head unit but it's got a Kenwood in at the moment. It does have a couple of bodywork nicks but nothing really bad. Should see us through a few more years yet ;)

Interesting. The plate is registered with a HA area code which is the same as mine. Mine has a similar history to yours (but substantially more miles lol) and came from Romford in Essex. I would have expected yours to be AL or AU. HA designation is Dudley in Birmingham. I wonder if there was some Vauxhall facility in the Dudley area?

I'll do some checking then as my mate works in parts as Smiths.

I mean a BIG Vauxhall facility, not just a sales garage. I'm thinking maybe our cars were site cars for a year before they were sold on as 1 year old ones.

Richie

I bet your right, our SRi was pre registered by Vauxhall but I'm yet to find out which dealer because from what you have said it was more than likely down your way. I'll get some pics of the dealer stickers in the car as they look classics with the old area codes on them. This motor won't be for sale for a long time yet so you can all just drool over it.

Popped over the Courtenays today as the East Anglia VxSCC region were holding their anual rolling road session so thought I'd take the Astra SRi to see what she was putting out. Took 3.5 hours to get there and 3 hours to get back!

Managed 114.4bhp and 119.7ibft at the flywheel with only a 20bhp loss through the transmission making it 94.4bhp at the wheels. John Shields who runs Courtenays loved it as he use to own one and he said it's not even loosened up yet.

There might be a feature in TV of the whole rolling road session in a few months so keep your eyes peeled.

Here's some pics for you all.

She's now clocked just over 36K and still going strong. Had to paint the under floor pan metal fuel pipes the other weekend as they were showing signs of surface rust but all sorted now after a sand and black hammerite+grease. Only outstanding jobs now are to get the n/s outer door bump strips re-stuck at the bottom edges and both front tyres rotated for even wear.

On a bad note the o/s rear arch is now beginning to show signs of the rust monster as a bubble has appeared. This will have to go on my to do list as my GTE is taking all my money up at the moment.

My girlfriend and I own 5 cars between us of which two are off the road for winter as they are more show cars than use everyday motors (Astra mk3 Arctic soon to be 3ltr V6 and Vectra ST200 #0005), my GTE valver rolling shell is off to the body shop next Sat to be fully prepped for fast road/track day use (caged heaven), we use my mk2 Starmist everyday (1.4 carbed motors rock) and the other half’s SRi only gets used on Friday's and odd weekends (1.8's are faster than most drivers think). Got my hands full looking after this little lot as you can imagine. I'm very lucky that my other half is into Vauxhall's and our main joint hobby are the cars. The best bit is they don't cost the earth to maintain and parts are as cheap as chips from the scrappers and other contacts I'm lucky enough to know.

Harvey

Last service in August I noticed that the front discs would need replacing soon and as the SRi is an '89 model it still had the crap GMF calipers which are a slide bolt design and prone to seizing. So the weekend before last I decided to pop to my favorite scrappers and get a pair of ATE calipers which are the floating body design and don't seize. A couple of weeks prior I purchased a new set of 256mm discs and pads from Vauxhall in preperation for the upgrade.

With the SRi mileage now at 36838 I then set about refurbing the ATE calipers which involved stripping them down and painting them in black Hammerite. Once this was done and they had dried I removed the old GMF calipers and discs, which I found to be the smaller 236mm vented type, then installed the new calipers along with the discs and pads followed by a full brake fluid flush with new DOT4. The brakes now feel much more solid and they aren’t even bedded in yet. I’ll get some pics up at the weekend because as usual I didn’t bother taking any when I did the work.

Popped to my local body shop this morning for a quote on the following:
- Replace both rear arches
- Remove and re-stick n/s door trims
- Spray both front wings
- Spray bonnet
- Spray wing mirror cases
- Spray top of boot hatch
- Spray spoiler
- Sort small rot on o/s rear sill

Got quoted £300 for the lot which I didn't think was bad so it's been penciled in for mid March. I'm going to strip off as much as I can as I don't want any over spray on anything and they are going to mask as much as they can. I'm also going to get them to give it a really good polish all over as it's never had one since it was bought. It’ll be ready for show season when she's done. Incidentally it's just had the yearly service and the speedo rolled over to 38K this week.

It's booked in for Monday the 13th March for the following work to be carried out:
• Replace both rear arches and paint
• Remove and re-stick all door trims
• Tidy n/s rear door, slight scuff in paint
• Spray both front wings
• Spray bonnet
• Spray both wing mirror cases
• Spray top of boot hatch
• Spray spoiler
• Sort small rot on o/s rear sill and check both sills for further rot
• Give car a really good polish

I've going to strip as much as I can to save the body shop messing about and I have told them I don't want any over spray on anything so they need to thoroughly mask everything.

It's the same body shop that has done work on my Vectra ST200, my GTE, my other half’s Astra mk3 (who also own's this SRi) plus numerous other friends cars. They do bare shell rebuilds, like my GTE, to small touch ups.

S & J auto finishers, near the Tesco in Ilkeston Derbyshire 0115 9447980 or 07841152095. They come highly recommended.

Harvey

I was up bright and early on Sunday so I could strip the SRi down before the GP began at 10:30. I think the neighbours think I’m mad as there I was at 07:45 removing the bumpers then it started to snow heavily at about 09:00. Removed all I needed to and put all the removed parts in my GTE as it’s the only place left where I have room. Dropped the car off at the body shop this morning at 08:00 and I’ll be getting it back next Saturday with fresh paint and new rear arches.

Which body shop do you use mate? I am from Long eaton. My starmist doesnt have any rust, but it has a few bits on it where it has had rust repaird and it has been sprayed by hand. If i have some spraying done I will have the GTE bumpers I have sprayed aswel and will try and get a GTE bonnet at the same time. Any idea how much for bumpers, bonnet and the rear wings sprayed and possibly the roof aswel as it has little bits of rust on it.

rodg98133

And also how did you put the power steering on it? Is it cheap and easy to do?

Harvey
19-03-2006, 08:00 AM
Picked the SRi up yesterday and the guys have done a great job. They recommended getting new door trims as they weren't prepared to attempt sticking the old ones back on. It's only £60 for all 6 trims with a silver line as the red are over £100, I can then use 6mm red trim tape to get the correct colour back on the car. Carmin red (L76) is difficult to colour match and the doors show up really bad so it's going back in two weeks time to have all the doors resprayed, got quoted £90 which I didn't was to bad. Basically the only thing that won't have been painted is the roof and the lower boot hatch.

Spent all day yesterday putting everything back on and I also under sealed all four arches and the front lower x-member. All in all for the work I've had done so far £300 is a bargain.

Will get some pics later today as I’m off to VBOA spares day in a few hours after the GP.

astrachamp
19-03-2006, 08:51 AM
not bad for 300, how much would it have cost for a full spray over the car, the carage down the road quoted 400 for a full respray in a diff colour, is it just me or is that a bit cheap?

Harvey
19-03-2006, 09:27 PM
That's very cheap but for £400 I don't think you’ll get a good finish, have you seen the work the bodyshop has done? I also strip the car before sending it in to the bodyshop and they are really good at masking everything so there is little to no over spray. The guys I use for body work are really good and bend over backwards to help as much as they can, a rare find nowadays.

Anyway more updates so here are the pictures taken this morning of the car all back together minus the side trims. She’s looking good but will be even better once the top of all the doors are done in a couple of weeks and new side trims are stuck back on. Also going to get new SRi stickers for the front doors.

Picked the car up this morning and have refitted the door handles, lock barrels and door cards. Still waiting on one side trim from Vauxhall so I'm waiting to fit them all at the same time. Couldn't get the OE SRi door stickers so got my sticker man to make exact copies and you can’t even tell they aren't originals. Will get some pictures later today.

Still waiting on one of the trims but it is hoped it will turn up this week. I have Friday to get it cleaned and polished for Donny along with the fitting of the new door trims. It's only covered 35 miles since it's been back as it can't be seen driving around looking naked with no trims.

She’s all back together now and I got the new door trims fitted last Friday just in time for Donny 2006. I must say the SRi it looking like a brand new car now. On the way into Donny on the Saturday I even had Duggie from TV stop me and comment with the following “wow, it’s nice to see such a good car amongst all this fibre glass sh*t”.
It got so many comments and looks at the weekend it was unbelievable, it was the only original looking car there and was somewhat out of place with all the blinged up motors but it was a good weekend.

Original Mk2's are the way forward!

Out of interest how have you fitted your rear mudflaps to the back bumper?

richie00boy
19-04-2006, 11:55 AM
I have the same rear mudflaps on my GTE and they just bolt on to the lip of the bumper with clamps, no holes required.

The mudflaps use two clamps so just squeeze the edge of the bumper to hold them in position.

Mini update as I haven't done it for a while:

Finally found an original drivers side wiper with spoiler as supplied with the SRi from new. Still got to get all the wiper arms painted in satin black but now aiming to get this done for Billing.

After being told the OE Vauxhall air filters cannot be supplied from Vauxhall, part no longer serviced, I decided to get a K&N filter so I don't have to mess about changing it every year.

Wish I had never fitted the front fogs as they weren't an option on the SRi when new, oh well, it's done now and they do look hard.

As of 3 months ago the car has only covered 565 miles, only gets used on Fridays and odd weekends.

After attending a very dusty Donny in April the car didn't get a polish so it's having it's first one since it was painted back in February.

Looking forward to Retro but need to get PVS out the way first so pop and say hello on Sunday. Amanda and I will be there from about 07:30 on the Derbyshire stand of the VxSCC.

I've finally got round to replacing the n/s CV boot today as the original, yes that's right original from new, had started to crack along the inner edges of the boot. Also checked all the front brakes, bushes and struts while I was under there. Mileage is now reading 38944 so come Retro it'll of clocked just over 39K.

We attended a local car show at the Rolls Royce site in Hucknall last Saturday and the car got a lot of attention amongst all the classis that were there as a fellow VxSCC member who works at Rolls Royce organised a Vauxhall stand with cars from the following clubs; VX220, Autobahn Stormers, Astra-Sport and VxSCC. Can't wait for Retro as it's just around the corner so I better put the finishing touches to the spec sheets that have been sorted out for the show.

It was pointed out to me at Retro that the passenger front door had dropped slightly and was catching the rear door when it was being shut. I checked for play and noticed that the lower hinge had some movement. I have now replaced this and adjusted the striker catch and the door lines up perfectly. Couldn’t believe how easy the old pin came out as it took me literally less than a minute and it was out.

Gave the car a wash today after a trip over to Boston yesterday to see my mates new 550bhp RS500, what a beast. Also popped up to Cadwell Park ( http://www.motorsportvision.co.uk/cadwell-park/index.asp) to see the BRSCC Club Car Championship, loads of different motors running and it was a really good day. The SRi is now only a few hundred miles shy of reaching 40K

Finally picked up the new rear washer jet from the dealers on Friday…yes a mk2 part still available from Vauxhall. Got it fitted this morning as the original one kept popped out and really annoyed me.

The SRi has it's MOT this coming Saturday and low and behold the exhaust has decided to give up and the centre section needs replacing. I've ordered a front pipe, centre section, new clamps and new gasket from Vauxhal and it was only £36 for the lot. I'll post pics up when the system gets swapped over this evening, providing the parts arrive today.

New back box and clamp ordered, hoping to get it today and stick it on this evening. If anyone want's the OE box with the chrome trim like the one on the SRi pop into your local Vauxhall dealer and order part 90399052, you will also need the back box mounting band/clamp which is 90543614.

Finally got the exhaust sorted this evening, bit disappointed when I picked the back box up as I had ordered part no. 90399052 which is the GT spec back box and should have the chrome slash cut tail pipe which was already fitted to the car. I think what you have ordered there is the GTE 8V back box. The chrome one is the SRi/ SX ones, IFAIK.

;)

A bit like the XE sump gasket - I can't imagine why anyone would ever fit an original one when they are known to immediately fail again. The later setup worked just fine.

So what's different about the new gasket then? Is it more that the Vx one had different cut marks around the outside?

Ian.

The OE Vauxhall gasket for the 18SE is a cork item and exactly the same as the one I have bought from my local Motor Factors who I know very well. Couldn't really say no to the none OE gasket as it was only £1, didn't even bother finding out the price of the Vauxhall item.

The sump gasket for the 18SE has a bonded rubber gasket and comes with the baffle plate, didn't want people getting confused with Gteman's comments as these were aimed at the sump gasket not the rocker cover gasket.

SRi flew straight through the MOT this morning with no advisories, yet another year of pleasurable motoring ahead of us. Also seems to drive more smoothly now the exhaust has been changed.

Just spoke with my local dealer and they have confirmed the Vauxhall part 18SE rocker gasket is cork and not rubber. Vauxhall price is £6.40 so I think I got a bargain for £1. They recommend assembling dry but said a small amount of sealer will help it last a little longer, I always use sealer anyway as I never trust cork gaskets.

Does look good and from the pics no faded paint work

The paint has been freshened up if you read the previous threads, you'll see it was done earlier this year.

Couple of weeks ago it went back in to have a very small bubble on the o/s rear arch sorted but to be on the safe side both rear arches were stripped back and repainted. It does need a good polish as it hasn't had one since Billing. Thinking of having the front and bumpers painted for next year as we haven’t had these done yet and the finish is looking a little tired and dull.

Checked the mileage last night and it's now on exactly 41,353. Only gets used once or twice a week.

The arches were done in Feb 06 and there were only a couple of very small blisters. To be honest I was being picky and the work done in Feb 06 was very cheap but I was more than happy with the results at the time. I'm basically keeping on top of things now so if I notice a bubble I'm getting it sorted before it gets any worse. I've not got any pictures of the arches being done, just the before and after.

Service is due on the SRi this coming Saturday so I'll be changing the oil, oil filter and plugs as well as checking everything else. Couldn't get a genuine air filter from Vauxhall last year as they are nls so I purchased a K&N panel filter instead. Before anyone asks it wasn't bought as a performance mod it's just so I don't have to keep changing it every year.

After giving the SRi a wash this morning I thought I’d take some pictures. Had to renew the front rubber this week as it was getting a little low and I thought sod it I’ll get something decent on the front so decided to purchase a pair of Bridgestone Potenza RE720, they are fantastic and highly recommended. The car clicked over 42K yesterday and she’s still driving like new.

Had an annoying misfire when starting from stone cold that cleared after a few seconds and a quick blip of the throttle so changed the plugs for OE spec Delco items a couple of weeks ago but the misfire wasn't fixed. Yesterday I replaced the dist cap, rotor arm and installed brand new Kerr Nelson (life time guarantee) leads, haven't been able to test as the car was warm but hopefully it'll be fixed now.

I also need a new car battery as the current Vauxhall item is on it's last legs, the green dot it now black all the time so a dead cell is on the way. The new alarm has finally put the mail in the coffin for it.

The o/s arch has decided to start playing up yet again. It’s now booked into the body shop on the 16th of this month to have both arches sorted, a scab on the n/s sill, a very small blister on the n/s wing and a few nicks touched up.

The mileage is now at 42,467 as of today.

Don''t think the 8v ones are as my Vauxhall parts man knows his stuff. I'll ask tonight as I'm popping in for my GTE sideskirt fittings.

As for the SRi it's strip down time this weekend...again...for the rear bumper, inner plastic boot panels as well as the front n/s arch liner as it's in the body shop next week to be sorted.

Yesterday before all the rain came and before most people were awake I was outside stripping all the parts off the SRi as it’s going into the bodyshop this week. The list of work to be done is as follows.
• Repair o/s rear arch, possibly new arch if required
• Treat small paint blisters n/s arch and repaint
• Wax-oil inner rear arches
• Repair rear n/s sill
• Treat small paint blister o/s rear sill and repaint
• Treat small paint blister n/s front arch

Why have the arches started to go so soon? Surely if they have removed all the rust and fitted new metal this shouldnt happen as quickly as it has !

This is what makes me so unsure about letting someone 'fix' my arches!

I appreciate your comments and to be fair on the body shop they know how I am with my cars and appreciate my concerns regarding the rear arches. If needs be I've told them to replace both arches again and they have offered a substancial discount as they know the car hasn't covered many miles since they were last done. I've been using this body shop for a long time now and trust them with my cars just a shame the arches have gone bad so quickly...but them again it is a mk2!

Popped to the body shop on Saturday morning and took a few pictures. All the bits I had found have been coated in red oxide paint and will be prepped for painting next week. A new arch repair panel has been fitted on the o/s and both rear inner arches and sills will be waxed oiled. They are hoping to have in finished for Wednesday next week which is cutting it a bit fine for PV as I’ve got to put it all back together again and give everything a good clean and polish. They also managed to remove the rear bumper trim for painting without damaging it, I tried but gave in.

It's good to see someone devoting so much care and attention to a Mk2 model that you rarely see these days.

Hopefully see ya at PVS dear boy.

Providing I get the SRi back by next Thursday at the very latest it'll be at PV on the VxSCC Derbyshire stand. They did a good job with the arch shape last time Ian so don't see why it'll be any different this time round. I'm just trying to keep on top of things with Amanda's SRi before they take a turn for the worst. It's such a mint car it would be a shame to let any of it go, but saying that it's 17 years old now. We both love the car to pieces and this one does get used unlike my Vectra ST200.

My list a work increased a little bit so I won't be getting the SRi back until tomorrow!!! Should have it all back together Friday evening so Amanda and I can give it a wash and polish as well as vacuum on Saturday morning before I leave for the Pod with my ST200 on tow in the afternoon. Amanda's bringing the SRi down on Sunday morning so pop and say hello as it'll be on the VxSCC Derbyshire stand.

Collected the SRi on Friday and spent most of the evening from 19:00 putting it all back together. Then woke up early on Saturday and spent 6 hours cleaning the car inside and out ready for PV. Amanda and I are both really pleased with the finish.

Here’s a list of all the work we had done:
Repair o/s rear arch, possibly new arch if required.
Treat small paint blisters n/s arch and repaint.
Wax-oil both inner rear arches and sills if possible.
Repair rear n/s sill where blistering.
Treat small paint blister o/s rear sill and repaint.
Treat small paint blister front of n/s wing and blow-in to wing.
Touch-up around door frames and on roof.
Treat and repair blister above upper rear n/s light.
Paint both front and rear bumpers.
Paint n/s wing mirror cover.

Collected the new expansion bottle and brake reservoir last Saturday and they were £21 each. Checked today and the reservoir cap/level is no longer serviced so I’m going to try bleaching the existing one and failing that I’ll try ordering a Cavalier/Calibra as they are virtually identical but different part numbers. Going to get them fitted before the Santa Pod meet on the 22nd September.

After a little more digging in EPC I have found that the Astra mk3 uses the same ATE reservoir as the mk2 but the cap is a different part number as the wiring uses a different loom plug. I've now ordered the mk3 cap and will change the loom plug on the SRi.

Is the loom just unplug and stick the mk3 one on? Or do wires have to be cut?

Harvey
01-08-2007, 09:55 AM
It uses a different loom plug so I'll be doing my usual trick and dismantling the plug and soldering it in place properly so you won't even know it's been changed ;) no cutting of the loom is involved. I'll be taking some pictures when I do the work and will list all the part numbers of the new bits and pieces I've purchased.

I forgot to mention that the SRi had it's MOT last Saturday and with less than 3.5K under it's belt over the last year I didn't bother checking anything. It passed with no advisories and I had a really good poke about underneath and all looked fine and dandy:) The service is due next month and I'll be doing my usual and changing the oil and filter and checking everything over.

I tried the Wurth trim dye last night but I’m not over the moon with the results. For some reason I thought it would magically transform the colour but it didn’t. I put two coats on which you can see on the left in the pic below. Going to do the rest of the bumper and them try a couple more coats to see if I can get it any darker. My other thought is to get the grey trim painted in a satin grey to match the original finish but I’m unsure if that’s the right thing to do.

Had a few issues with the SRi recently. First off the rear o/s centre locking motor packed up. After a quick test I found the motor was fine and it was the loom that was faulty. I stripped the door loom out and replaced the faulty wire and it’s all better now. The next issue is a bit more terminal, the inner roof lining has started peeling off its backing. It needed removing for a proper inspection and to see if it can be fixed so I got a couple of screwdrivers out and cracked on with it. 15 minutes later it was out and the all parts that needed removing were refitted so we can still use the car.

The sagging roof lining where its started peeling off.

Sorry you haven't got the results you wanted Harvey, it's been great for me. I can't think of anything other than silicone or similar on the trim already, that could prevent it from working.

Harvey

I've never put anything on the trims and that's why they look so bad at the moment. Don't be sorry Rich it's not your problem. I can only think they are that bad that they require a number of applications. The satin paint idea is ticking away in my head at the moment as it'll save any further fading issues and will just require a quick polish every now and then.

My mate had a J reg MK3 where the headlining had done the same.

The towing eye was bent down. Have lifted it . Covers on but a bit loose. If I loose it can you get replacements?
That car of yours is great. Its cleaner under the bonnet than mine. But im happy, its only for driving.

My kadett's headlining has also started to come off some 6 months ago. Bought replacement lining, contact glue and it went great, better than it was. Spend about 20euros.

Its the 3rd kadett here in portugal i saw loosing headlining, my father's and a friend of mines caravan are also loosing it.
I believe its the end of life of that part, it just hangs over some 15-20years.

btw, mine kadett is from 12/90, black and almost 200k km

I just cleaned the engine bay with WD40 when we first got the car and leather it out every time I wash it.

The head lining is still in out living room as I've not had chance to look at it properly yet. Going to see if I can get a brand new one but I doubt it.

The SRi has been running rather cool of late and I suspected that the thermostat has weakened so I set about replacing it today. It wasn’t without it’s dramas as you’ll see below.

I ordered the parts from my local dealers after checking the correct numbers for the 18SE on EPC.

New thermostat and seal ready for fitting

At this point I realised the replacement thermostat wasn’t the correct item and wouldn’t fit so I popped back to my local deals to exchange the part. After a quick check on EPC the part number I originally purchased was correct. I then had a thought and asked to check a C20XE thermostat which also cames with a new housing and it was exactly the same as the part I needed.

C20XE item on left and 18SE on the right.

Used the car for work this morning and my god the heaters now get hot. The temp gauge also moves off the bottom of the scale and the cabin gets warm. So I can safely say the old thermostat was cream cracked and the new one has done the trick :)

Good man, I did this exact job the other week. The thermostat I got came with a housing so I'm surprised the one you got didn't. I didn't look what fully open temperature mine was though. I have the receipt so I might look if it's the same number as the XE one you got. The one I got was the part number listed for a 20SER/SEH/SE/NE

Right, as you asked Tony I just got the receipt out and it's part number 90443472 for the thermostat and 9129998 for the rubber seal. Which is different from the XE one. The one I got also looks more like the one Harvey took out, i.e. no gold bit.

Would the xe one be better?

richie00boy
16-12-2007, 06:23 PM
Yes it comes with the housing and looks just the same from the outside. TBH I would get what I got as it's specified for the engine. I'm wondering if the XE one has a slightly higher fully open temperature. Maybe with the XE having a slightly bigger rad this is why.

Harvey

Guys guys guys...the item I ended up getting is the exact same part number as Rich has fitted and yes it comes complete with housing. If you look at the 1st picture with them side you can just make out the part number on the bag. You cannot buy the thermostat seperately from vauxhall as in comes prefitted in the housing. Rich, if you can be bothered to takes yous off and check the temps I'm 110% sure it'll be the same as the one I have fitted. They just change the design every now and then so they might look slightly different.

I've found they do like to be warm, the old OHC engines. I replaced the thermostat on my Nova daily driver last month and it idles more nicely and doesn't hesitate at all on the motorway now. Doesn't seem to apply to the XE in my mate's Manta though, that's had a duff thermostat for ages and it doesn't seem to affect it. Weird...

We’ve seen some harsh frosts this Winter and with the SRi living outside I though it would be showing some signs of battle scars by now. However, yet again the mighty mk2 proves me wrong and it rolled over 45,000 miles last Friday 22nd February 2008. The SRi has been faultless this Winter and to say it’s only use once or twice a week it starts first turn of the key every time and doesn't miss a beat. The half year service is due in a couple of weeks and it’s covered just less than 1,500 miles during this time but as usual I’ll be changing the oil and filter anyway. Below are a couple of pics Amanda took last Saturday after I had washed it the night before. I’ve also included a scan of the Total Vauxhall feature of our SRi that was in last months mag March 2008 Issue 81.

I noticed that the front section of the front n/s wing had a few under paint rust bubbles appearing and on further investigation rust was evident on the underside. It's now in the body shop getting sorted and if they can't rescue the wing then it'll have to be replaced, it's also having a couple of other bits and pieces sorted that I'm not happy with ready for the show season.

It’s been a busy one today. The Friday before PV I noticed that the SRi was running very hot and when I got home it dumped all it’s coolant. After checking where it was leaking from I though I had sussed it and it was the CTS (Control Temperature Switch) for the engine management so I popped on a new copper washer. All was fine on the way to PV but it started leaking again on the way back. Turned out it was the water pump that was leaking. I did make it home and as the leak was very small I used the car for work on Friday and collected all the parts needed from Vauxhall on my way home.

After stripping the car down I went to fit the pump and it turned out to be the wrong pump and seal, even after I had supplied my chassis and engine number. It was a later spec square tooth pump for something or other.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v214/harvey.emsley/Astra%20SRi/P6160234Medium.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v214/harvey.emsley/Astra%20SRi/P6160235Medium.jpg

However the belt was correct as I needed the 111 tooth version.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v214/harvey.emsley/Astra%20SRi/P6160231Medium.jpg

So off I trotted back to the dealers with my old pump in hand and they basically turned round and said they couldn’t help, oh well I thought I’ll try my mate who runs our local Motor Factors. He came up trumps as I told him I wanted a curved metal impellor pump and it also needed to have the metal bracket for the rear cambelt cover. He popped into his store and came back with a Tru Part pump no. WB1178 which was perfect. Some comparison pics of the old and new below, note the blades on the new pump aren’t as deep but I don’t feel this will be an issue.

Engine pics with old pump and belt removed. I find it much much easier removing the alternator when changing water pumps and also the airbox as the time it takes to remove them saves time in the long run.

Couldn’t resist some pics of the ultra clean throttle body. I cleaned it over two months ago and you can still eat your dinner off it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v214/harvey.emsley/Astra%20SRi/P6160250Medium.jpg

I greased the pump mounting face on the block and the pump itself before fitting then popped the belt on and tensioned it up by spinning the pump clockwise. I then checked the timing marks before turning it over by hand twice to checked they still line up. It’s not rocket science and once you have done it a few times it gets easier and easier.

The car has now done around 50 miles since the pump was changed and all looks and sounds well. I took it very very steady on Friday, no more than 2,000rpm in each gear, as it was the first time the car had been driven since the new pump was installed. Gave it bit more this morning on the way to work and took it to 4,000rpm. Water lever is steady with no visible signs of any leaks :)

Bit of lucky find on Monday as my mate was at our local scrappers and called me to say they had a mk2 hatch in with good roof lining. The SRi lining started to peel about a year ago and I’ve been driving round with it like this.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v214/harvey.emsley/Astra%20SRi/P9250629Medium.jpg

I still had the old lining as I was intending getting it recovered but never got round to it, the offending peeling.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v214/harvey.emsley/Astra%20SRi/P9250628Medium.jpg

After a quick decision as I work flexible hours I left early on Monday and popped to the scrappers to find a very good condition J plate red 5 door hatch mk2 GL. I then raped it for the roof lining which is the one below.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v214/harvey.emsley/Astra%20SRi/P9250627Medium.jpg

Hey presto the new non peeling roof lining fitted in the dark last night. Finally the SRi is whole once more. It needs a little clear here and there but other than that it’s top condition.

24-09-2008, 05:31 PM
Darren, I never though of doing that. If I ever take it out again I'll do a how2. It is a straight forward job to be honest but then again I have done it a few times with various mk2 I have owned :)

To remove:
Remove x3 grab handles + drivers blanking plates
Remove sun visors and clips
Remove interior light
Remove rear most upper trim panel
Remove x2 A pillar inner trim panel
Remover sunroof winder and trim panel
Remove sunroof edging trim
Pull x4 door seals at the top clear from the frame (5 door hatch only)
Pull x2 front door seals at the top clear from the frame (3 door hatch only)
Gentle pull x2 rear side window inner trim at the top, you should feel it pop out (3 door hatch only)
Gentle pull x2 B pillar inner trim at the top, you should feel it pop out (5 door hatch only)
Gentle pull x2 rear most C pillar inner trim at the top, you should feel it pop out
Now carefully remove the roof lining by pushing it forward to clear the C pillar trim and then working it left and right to clear the B pillar trims. You will now find it is clear and resting on the front head rests. Remove it by opening the rear hatch and carefully pulling it through. Not entirely sure about saloons but my guess is you will need to either remove the front seats or wind them flat and remove the lining through a rear or front door opening.
Fitting is the reversal to removal.

Had a slight issue with the SRi on the way back from the BTCC at Brands Hatch on Sunday. We got there fine with no problems but on leaving the car was misfiring on one cylinder and once we got to the Dartford tunnel it was getting worse and worse missing on two now. As we had to get back to Nottingham I had no choice but to limp it into the services and take a look. Checked the coolant and no signs of fluid loss or oil in the coolant so not head gasket failure. Next port of call was the loads so I checked the plug ends which were fine. However the dizzy cap ends were damaged and looked to of corroded badly and were falling apart. Luckily where was just enough end left to spray them open and shove them back into the cap. The SRi then got us home with no further issues. The leads are Kerr Nelson High Voltage which carry a lifetime guarantee so I was able to swap this for a brand new set and the car is now fine. I have been using this make for years on all my Vauxhalls with no issues so this is a strange one indeed.

Pics of the damaged lead ends which fit into the dizzy cap, even the coil lead was damaged.

Very odd. Weirdly I had a misfire caused by a duff lead in my Nova leaving the BTCC at Rockingham a couple of years back and had to bodge it to get home too. That was at the plug end of one of my Bosch leads, the lead had come away from the metal connector itself and the whole lead end just pulled off. There weren't any copper strands protruding from the lead at all and I didn't have a knife to strip back the insulation a bit either. I remember frantically rummaging through the boot for something and finding an inch-long offcut of speaker wire on top of the spare wheel, so I pulled the copper strands out of it, balled them up and wedged them in the end of the lead connector. I didn't expect it to work but it ran fine on the 100 mile journey back!

Must be something about the BTCC LOL!

Few more ‘issues’ with the SRi this week. Had a call from Amanda when she got to work on Friday saying there was a loud clunk from the front of the SRi on her way there. She said it was driving fine and the brakes still worked so I told her to nurse it home.

On further investigation I found this at the o/s front…can you spot the missing and damaged items? Yep, you got it the drop link had broken and the CV boot was split.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v214/harvey.emsley/Astra%20SRi/PA050596Medium.jpg

Fixed the CV boot last night, I hate doing them but it’s done now. I also changed the engine oil and filter last night as it was a week overdue. Drop links were fitted this morning and only took me 15mins. Glad I did both sides as the n/s was also very close to snapping although visually it looked OK, you can see what is left when I removed it compared to the new item.

Not updated this thread in a while as the SRi has been going strong through Winter with no issues to report. As it was nice yesterday and I was at a loose end while on holiday I thought I’d give it a pre Summer wash and polish and it came up very well. The arches, sills and front n/s wing are showing initial signs of surface corrosion and after a chat with Amanda we are either going to get them sorted or sell her on later this year once I get her mk3 V6 conversion finished and on the road. Not decided exactly what we are going to do but we can’t really justify running 5 cars between 2 of use so I believe something will have to go.

It’s only covered 1,500 miles in nearly 6 months so not exactly loading the miles on

I'm sure the existing hose with split the next time I remove it but at least I now have a replacement when it's required.

Shame as the rest of the underside is still very solid. Strange timing as I’m currently looking into buying myself a MIG welder so I can start learning how to weld on my GTE. Got it booking in at a local welders who is cheap and very good a week on Monday.

I was also informed that the handbrake only just passed so when I got home I removed the handbrake cable and gave it a good lubing session with WD40. Then I thought I’d adjust the shoes and found the o/s wheel cylinder had just started weeping. Quick call to my local dealers and a new cylinder was obtained and fitted. I then thought I might as well change the complete brake fluid and it would be rude not to fit the new m/c reservoir I’ve had sitting in the boot for about 6 months.

Old master cylinder reservoir removed

When I came to bleed the front o/s caliper the bleed nipple had rotten away where the 9mm spanner is used. I had to use mole grips to remove it, thought it was going to snap but it didn’t luckily. I had loads of spares in my shed and found an as new bleed nipple replacement. All sorted now and the car is ready for some welding.

Check out the old fluid colour, it’s seen better days.

As the SRi failed the MOT last Sat I stripped the carpet and sound deadening out this afternoon to get it ready for welding next Monday. I was a little shocked when I started digging some more as the sound deadening was all that was holding it together. Think I’m going to get a full front floor pan installed now.

See, this is what worries me. I've never had the carpet out of either of mine, and when I see a Mk2 as nice as yours with that sort of rot I wonder what I'd find under mine. Top work as always though, I hope the repair's easy...

Slight change of plan as I spoke with the chap who's doing the MOT repair and as I plan on getting the bodywork restored very soon he's going to just patch the floor so I can get a ticket on the car. I then plan on getting the floor pan replaced when I get the rest of the bodywork sorted.

Been away for a few days near Whitby and while I was there I arranged for the SRi floor an to be patched. Pretty impressed with it to say it cost next to nothing and means I have another years MOT on the mk2. I can now start looking for somewhere locally that will be able, willing and interested in replacing the panels and full paint.

Plated top and bottom as well as under sealed

Slapped a load of red oxide on top of the inside plate before I pop everything back

Also got a set of genuine front arb bushes as the factors drop link kit I installed last year are showing signs of cracking, for anyone interested the part no. for each bush is 2875013

wow, some very famliar pictures there ! luckily the more important suspension related bits of metal underneath are made of sterner stuff

nice repair there, all i would add is that primer is porous to help its top coat adhere, and will rust quite quickly in isolation.

The drop link bushes were replaced this evening as the factor ones were a bit tosh and had started to split after only being on a year and covering just over 3K.

Can you guess what it is yet?

I had the exact same thing with pattern ARB bushes too, put some on for the MOT and the following year they were flagged up again as deteriorated! It's genuine all the way for me now. Good to see the car's being looked after as well as ever :)

polybush items are very cheap and will outlast the car. be nice if they made them in black though rather than bright primary colours!

Not been using the SRi of late due to getting hold of yet another motor so for the last 6 weeks it’s been sitting on the drive with 49,992 miles on the clock. It’s not been unloved though as it’s been washed 3 times and due to the last alarm croaking I got hold of a new alarm.

The alarm in question is a genuine retro Vauxhall 902 ‘delux remote control alarm system’, oh yeah baby :)

So after a few minutes of stripping things down it came to fitting time

I’m very happy with it but had to mute the optional lock/unlock beep from the siren as it sounded like a strangled chicken and was a little embarrising. Anyway it’s now back to remote centre locking which is a bonus, you just don’t know how much you miss it until it’s not working.

All back together again.

Amanda still hasn’t yet decided what’s happening with the car as it really does need some bodywork TLC but we might end up selling it as we just can’t justify having so many cars.
