Thanks for all the comments guys
The flat and polish still hasn't happened as I did say there was no rush at the start of the job :(
So I got a couple of pics with the doors and wings on
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b209/gteman/18092007157.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b209/gteman/18092007156.jpg
I also received the quarter window seals...
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b209/gteman/18092007158.jpg
If you look close enough at the top one you can see that it has been flattened along the bottom to the right hand side :wasntme:
I phoned Daewoo to complain and was told it would be at least a month before I could get another one. He did say he would turn a blind eye if I try to straighten it and it doesn't work he will still take it back.
I also cleaned the carpets and have cleaned rear lights, foglight's and anything else I can find :dizzy:

Looking good Graham. It's better to leave the flatting and polishing anyway as it gives the paint time to cure properly before its sealed with the polish.

Looks like a little touch up required first...
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b209/gteman/20092007160.jpg
I noticed a small crack in the paint that went all the way through the filler back to the bare metal which means it's my prep at fault :fsfsfsfsf150:
Other than the crack I managed to fit the door lock mechanism's and fitted the hatch..

21-09-2007, 06:22 PM
Doesn't that look good!
Funny you have (not funny, of course) the same problem in that swage line as I did - I put it down to dust remaining in it and the paint not adhering to the body properly. In my case, it wasn't severe and I've got to admit I simply pressed the paint back down to stretch it while it was still soft and painted over it. No issues so far, but I do intend to repaint that side.

£380 to buy individually on special for £150 so I couldn't resist. I probably will never earn my money back on them but it's nice to have them.
I wish I had the shrinking hammer for the astra rear quarter at the time though they will come in handy for restoring my next project my Manta Gte.
Still no sign of the astra getting flatted and polished she seems to be bottom of a big queue. I think a few subtle hints will need to be dropped just shortly http://www.easysmileys.com/img/dwarf.gif

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b209/gteman/18102007169.jpg
Very slight orange peel at parts and maybe a small ripple on the o/s quarter but I think I'm being to fussy.
The small blemish in the swage line has still to be blown in so not quite finished.
I have arranged for the windows to be fitted tomorrow, a new front window, the back refitted and the quarter window seals stuck in. Mentioned in a previous post the quarter seal was damaged in transit as it had been stood on and flattened slightly so I made good use of my new dolly and sorted it. It was tricky though I managed by mounting the dolly in the vise and tapping the seal around it. It worked a treat which I'm glad about as I think Daewoo are now getting short of them now as well.
more pics tomorrow

She's looking fabulous Graham, I really ought to spend some more time in the garage with mine and get it looking as good... of course there are other things to do too though.
How flat have you polished it back? Is there some residual orange peeliness there? I always aim to leave some, as it looks more 'factory' but know that most people want the paint mirror flat.
Keep it coming. :)

I'm not sure how i'm going to fit the side skirts whether to drill holes as per original or silicone them on to save he holes and the silicone should do a better job of keeping the water out. It would also make removing them easier for cleaning as Brett has mentioned elswhere hmmm
Looks good. Why did you seal the side windows in? Rather than having them hinged.

They are hinged it is the black seal that is stuck on to the body the windows only helped them to stay in place until the bonding cured

I thought Gertrude had run out of petrol in the bodyshop so got a gallon last night and filled her up today.
Still wouldn't start so I pulled the plugs expecting them to be flooded and cleaned them as she hasn't been a run which didn't work so stuck a new set in and she still didn't start http://www.easysmileys.com/img/scratchhead.gif
So back to basics noticed the fuel pump wasn't running and after a bit of investigation discovered the fuel pump relay has been stolen when the car was parked outside the bodyshop in there locked yard http://www.easysmileys.com/img/sad_angry2.gif
Found a spare in the garage which had me happy until I found out it didn't work so had to order one from Vauxhall :(
Your cars looking brilliant mate. I love seeing the painted, finished article.
I had the same problem with not starting, my relay wasnt stolen though, it just decided not to work after being sat for months. Will I ever see your red beastie on track? Knockhill on the 11th. I'm going to book it soon.

Vinyl is a pig to fit :yuck:
Was told by the bodyshop to spray soapy water onto the door first it allows the vinyl to be moved which it does but won't stick in the corners as it is to cold for it to dry out.
After lining the vinyl at the bottom on the door and the quarter and messing around for ages I thought it was done until I shut the door and the top doesn't line up.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b209/gteman/29112007195.jpg
Thankfully the soapy water allowed me to move it about a bit and got it the best I can.

Little bits here and there
emptied this tin of waxoyl around the car and need another to finish some bits
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b209/gteman/15022008261.jpg
also fitted the side plastic in the boot and around the quarter windows which let me fit the rear belts, parcel shelf and boot carpet.
I seem to have an intermittent water leak in the drivers foot well. I have plugged an old alarm hole which didn't help so the carpets aren't going in until I've the time to find and sort it.
I've slowly been gathering clips and fastners to finish things off though there's a few bits outstanding. Got a new washer jet only one to go.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b209/gteman/26122007206.jpg

The floorpan got a cleanup before the carpet goes back in even hoovered the glovebox and the seatbelts lol I've also fitted the passenger door panel.
Next on the list is fit front bumper if the parts come tomorrow and get the rest of the interior from my mates loft and get it fitted.

That's coming on nicely Graham. :)
Waxoyl is pretty satisfying to put on, isn't it?
Looks like you brushed it in there, I've considered that a few times but always opted for the heat and spray gun approach instead as I didn;t get as covered in the stuff. Heat was to get all the air bubbles out of the seams and encourage it to flow more easily, the downside being that you always have to apply a second lot when it cools down.

It was sprayed initially and I rubbed it around the arch where I could reach just to make sure. I wore nitrile gloves as the waxoyl disintegrates the latex gloves.
I think another treatment in the heat of summer will finish her off nicely.

Finally got the urge to find the water leak into both front footwell so out came the only seat so I could get right in about things and with the aid of a hose found the water coming in via the heater box dripping out the bottom but no clue where it was coming in. After stripping the wipers then heater blower out from the scuttle area I couldn't believe the amount of dirt there was literally handfuls of muck after digging for a while I found what I thought was a grommet only to find it had a hole totally blocked and is the infamous scuttle drain that I read about but never really looked for before.
So water leak sorted which will let me get the interior back in at last.
New stuff for today ala Darren style ;) who I have to thank for pointing out the availability of the air trunking

I ain't got a clue what should be in there but the dealer reckons he knows and has ordered two for me whither they can get or not I'll just need to wait and see.
Also sorted out the windscreen washers with a new pump only to find the bottle is leaking from an invisible hole :hissyfit:

Sorry yes T there is nothing there to hold in the washer also it was not an original Gte bumper so the holes have been added.

Scratching my head with the centre console, a tab stops it passing the gearlever housing so I'm wondering if it is a 8v console I've got by mistake. It has a 5 cassette holder but have found a 3 cassette infill section in a box so not sure.

Ooooh... red car porn, that looks really really spot on, all the work has surely paid off now.
Can't wait to see this at Billing.

BTW, you'll know if you've got an 8v console, it's about an inch too tall for the 16v floor.
The 16v one can only accommodate 3 cassettes, the 8v one has a cubby hole to the left of the (5) tape holders.

Well made it to Billing as a few of you may have noticed
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b209/gteman/Billing%202008/12072008067.jpg
Longest test drive of my life 340 miles http://www.easysmileys.com/img/phew.gif
All went well until it started raining a bit and I had to put on the window wipers and noticed the voltage gauge dropping off down to 12v leaving me to panic thinking the alternator was packing in. It would jump back up to 14v to keep my hopes up only for a short while before falling back down to 12v again which left that sinking pit of your stomach feeling lol This got worse as it started to get dark and I had to put the lights on.
This kept us amused for the last 140 miles or so since we didn't have a stereo fitted though with doubts in our mind we did make it at around 10pm to be met by Ian to be told this is a common problem with the gauge just ignore it :irked::banghead:
Getting back from Billing I got time to give her a good polish and wax

Still need to fix a couple of bits to finish the car including fitting the centre console bought from g.teri :thumbsup: and still in two minds over fitting the side skirts whether to fit them as original or just to bond them on saving drilling.

I was just wondering how you where doing last night, do you still have the same number.
Gertrude is looking good and been used through the winter as well, just giving a bit of grief warm starting so probably an engine build on the cards.
Yep im back (again). Ive started gathering parts again as mine is looking a bit tired and sorry but i cant get rid, still have the soft spot for her.
Im still on the same number bud, you?

Dust seems to be a bit of a problem which is ok in the primer but I will need to sort out something better for base and lacquer.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b209/gteman/Astra-mk2/27072007093.jpg
Also primed the last of the plastic tho one of the vents has a rash of silicone eyes :(
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b209/gteman/Astra-mk2/27072007091.jpg
And a new compressor should sort out any air supply problems for my new HVLP gun
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b209/gteman/Astra-mk2/27072007090.jpg
Need to reprime the doors and the hatch and then the big test the shell. If all goes well then I'll be painting the top coats if not then a few quotes may be requested.
Stoopid question where is/was the workshop in the first pic?
