  • DarrenHs' GTE16v, second edition

hello, i'm new to the site, this is my astra gte16v. lol!!

i decided to sell my mk3 turbo because i have no passion for the mark. As much of nice car i made it, it just wasnt pleasing me to own it. it sold in only 5 days which was nice for me, and at a price that doesnt make me cry at night. you always lose on cars, but i made enough money to be happy and have a nice sum to move forward.

so, i started keeping an eye out for mk2's for sale over the last months. i was interested in bigdrifters and braders cars at first, both lovely but too far away and both very finished cars. then last week i spotted james' car for sale which is local and pretty much bog standard apart from wheels and exhaust.

i hope i dont offend james when i say the car is not perfect, and i also hope james does not take offence if i point at faults or describe things i'd like to change. its going to be a great little astra, and its got some key features that make it an excellent buy.

Its a J reg so one of the newest gte's you can find, the chassis is in great shape for a 17 year old astra. its a light colour so had the late black interior as standard. its also had part of a starmist interior fitted so its not even got the dark rainbow seats or cards. it looks clean and modern inside. no garish grey (or beige) plastics. unmolested dark parcel shelf is a big plus. (that it will stay) the engine is in great shape for its age, no knocks or rattles or noticeble smoke. pulls really well. better than i remember mine as standard.

so thats about it so far, just presnting it as it is. i'll update the thread as i go as usual with lots of pictures. there wont be any major modifications, just lots of mind numbingly boring slide shows of me tightening bolts and stuff

You know it makes sense.Welcome back. I've seen James's car a couple of times and thought it was a good honest motor.

todo list... (again, please dont take offence james, its a project car so i will be quite thorough and show much love!!)

bodywork: i will get the car into my local bodyshop in january to have the bodywork restored. at first glance this will mean 1 front wing, 2 rear arches, inner rear side panels (the bits at the rear of the rear arches, inside the bumper) and some paint. wing mirrors need small attention, the retaining clips on the drivers side is broken and the passenger side isnt electric. James gave me two spares so I can make it all good, the outer body coloured shell comes off of innards. Might delete the wing mounted aerial and go for a bee-sting.

chassis: bring the chassis together with a new set of eibach pro springs, billstien sprint shocks, new standard bushings, front upper strut brace, front strut rebuild with top mounts, retaining cups etc. welded lower strut brace tying into the bulkhead

interior: pretty much perfect. just needs a new gear stick gator, will buy a mk3 leather one and cover the mk2 carcass. every single dash bulb has blown so i got a box of 10 today and made a start. blown tail lamp warning light and low brake pad warning light are illuminated on the check control. 2 bits of trim missing that go round the door release. might fit stock leather gte16v gear nob from my old mk2. replaced broken heater switch with brand new old stock item today.

engine and transmission: again, mechanically excellent condition. quaiffe diff on order, considering a quieter exhaust but the current one is in great shape so might stay. small engine bay tidy up, maybe a service. ordered a full set of engine mountings which i will vulcanise the gaps with high build seam sealer.

Brakes: great shape but will upgrade to 288mm vectra kit on the front. Abs fault needs diagnosing, or decommission whole abs system

            NOT to do list...

remove interior or heavily modify the engine.

lol! i might go down the grp N route for a bit more performance, but its gonna stay XE.

i just want it clean standard looking and honest. lots of attention to the chassis to have some fun on track days, mods you cant see but make it a great all round car.

Do you not fancy a go at the bodywork yourself Darren? I quite liked learning to paint, its dead satisfying when you see the end result.

fair comment, i do have a powerful compressor, but it also scares me enough not to want to learn on my own car. if i didnt have a bodyshop i trust, and know that the car will come out perfect, i would have a go

Compressor size isn't really an issue nowadays with modern painting equipment anyway. You should try it on something smaller scale first to get some confidence in the techniques and problems. I'm not going to lie, patience and good preparation are the keys to it. I made loads of mistakes but I had a bare shell so I just rubbed things back till I got good at it, he wouldn't admit it but I swear that my mate was giving me duff advice sometimes just so that I could see 'the wrong way' to do things, particularly with metallic paints!! I learnt to weld years and years ago but only just learned to paint last year. I would say that welding and painting have made me and saved me a great deal of money over time.

And I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with it as well.

We all knew you would only be happy in a Mk2

good to see James's car in good hands
