10L Glacier White, easy to colour match and off the shelf touch up cans readily available.
Still got to get the F28 back I PMed you about and then I'll be giving S&D Transmissions a call before popping up to see them.
Good to hear you aren't giving in with the Champ, just do bits as and when, best way to do things.

I was thinking either white or red but being a bit of a polishing bufty at times i'm leaning more towards red...plus keeping red means I won't have to send the logbook off to notify the DVLA (yes I am that lazy)
Been doing a lot of thinking lately about what to do...I won't be getting rid of the car but STILL not sure which way I'm going with it...track or not to track?
I was all set to start work then did the trackday in the GSi and started confusing myself as which would make the better track car...the mk2 I've had for years or the mk3 that's a bit rough round the edges?? What I have decided (for definite) is to do the welding it needs, both sills plus rear corners and see how i feel then

which track day did you do ?
you have alot more fun i think when your not scared of spanking it in to the barrier. some of the days i have done i have seen cars alot more expensive and they are tip toeing it round the track.
evo guy fine example going to cost thousands to repair after spanking it proper..
mk2 for shows
mk3 for track, cage semi's have fun!
That's pretty much what I've been thinking, it'll be keeping the LET and getting restored...it'll still have some track bits like seats and harnesses but wont be fully stripped out like I was thinking of
I would say this is yet another case of me changing my mind but seeing as I never actually made my mind up this time I think I can get away with it lol

I think if you step away from Bordeaux Red it starts to become less of a Champion. Depends on if you care about that sort of stuff really. I wouldn't use your daily car as a track car. Way too much messing around. I wouldn't want to use a GTE as a daily car again either because they are too tempramental. I vote track the GTE and keep the heavier MK3 as the daily.

In what way is a 16valver temperamental. I've driven mine on long trips on the continent and towed a trailer back from Switzerland, it didn't miss a beat and didn't use a drop of oil.
Well maintained they are just as reliable as any other car new or old.
Now having made this statement it just as likely the wheels will drop off and the engine will full out, lol.
To be honest it became less of a champion when I flogged off the wheels and interior. I don't look at it as one anymore anyway...it's a mk2 with plenty of go faster bits. I've ran GTE16v's for years as daily drivers and they're hard to fault and I've never had any problems. I've done Holidays to Torquay a few times in mine and it's not missed a beat
I've been running the GSi for a few weeks with buckets and harnesses and it's great...all it needs to go out on track is dump the spare wheel and other crap and it's good to go and it's not that much heavier than a GTE

I ran mine for 8yrs and it never broke down once, even went to Devon on holiday with it.
My old Champion when I drove down to Torquay...set off at 1am and got there just as the sun was coming up

GTE
Gets Towed Everywhere.
Maybe I've had some bad luck with the many I've had the pleasure of. All of them at some point have had some daft running problem, usually sensors or ICVs getting sticky plus rear arches don't tend to last long once they have been replaced with the Hadriens lot. By the time I owned Scott Baker's old Bordeaux car it was on it's 3rd set of arches and sills. I've also got the tiniest blister pop up on the one I just bought of Bigdrifter and that had a comprehensive rebuild around 3 years ago and had been treated like royalty. Won't be long before that was tending to and it isn't even in daily use.
It may also be down to where I live. The roads are quite harsh and it speeds up the wearing out process a bit. Plus the valley I live in remains quite damp in the evenings and early mornings which won't be helping 21 year old looms, etc.
I wouldn't put one in daily use for those reasons. If it was a base model I probably could as it simply wouldn't be getting driven as hard as a performance version and there is less to go wrong but that's just me perhaps.
I stand by what I say about picking a MK3 over a MK2 as a daily. They are more modern, more refined and better built just not as exciting in my experience.
First job is to sort the bodywork...then we'll see how i get on. It won't be a daily driver that's for sure, the fact my other car got twatted outside work is the reason for that and besides, it won't be anytime soon it'll be back on the road anyway

I had that happen to an old modified MK2 Golf GTi I had years ago. I'd had a VW Caddy embossed panel welded in place of the rear panel below the tailgate and a load of flush work done to the boot. One morning this Grundon bin lorry reversed down our slip way to pick up the bins and somehow managed to completely miss the bright Jazz Blue car in the mirrors. I was stood in our showroom with my mug of tea sipping away watching it all happen in slow mo. Kinda thought he IS gonna stop right? Fail. Off went the alarm and I ran out going spastic at the driver. Thankfully it was just the tailgate that got totalled but the paint match was never 100% after that so I am loathe to go through that again with any MK2 Astra.
The GSi now has a broken headlight thanks to some twat at work. It's not worth risking taking the GTE...the van drivers we get really don't give a toss if they catch your car so it can stay on the drive

Case and point. What a pain in the bum. You can prepare for everything you do yourself pretty much but other people? I am actually a lot more relaxed about car damage if someone leaves a note saying sorry rather than just driving off. OK, still out of pocket, but with an apology it is a little less annoying. The Bordeaux Dongaz bought off me got swiped during my ownership and a Pug 306 D Turbo I had got the rear quarter creased. On both occasions a simple sorry would have been sufficient. Stuff happens. Not a biggy. Ignorrance is rude though.
Seeing as the XE for the other car isn't far off I decided while I was in the mood to do a bit on the GTE...nothing major as it's fooking boiling but stripped a few more bits out of the engine bay. It's looking in a shite state at the minute with being sat on the drive for 10 months, even sorrier with half the engine bay missing
deja vu...

i bought a 10 meter by 6 meter heavy tarpaulin on ebay for quite reasonable money. might get a bit sweaty i guess, but its big, really thick, weather/sun proof.
Not bothered about it getting sweaty to be honest as it's all going to be redone anyway...just want to keep it out of sight of thieving twats.

good buy baz.
Had a little left over energy so the engine and box came out (...again)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/bartrum/IMAG0245.jpg
I love how easy mk2's come apart. It's looking sorry at the moment but the GSi is nearly done and with all the lovely mk2's that'll be at Billing I'll be cracking on with it in the not too distant future
Sent the box off a few weeks ago and got the news today that the main shaft might be the cause of the problems...will know more tomorrow but its not looking good and I might need a new box and like a tit I sold my old ones including 2 I had just for spares
Davey J

Gutted man! They are becoming a pain to source too. Might be worth a look at an F23 at some point? Loads around and Chip's had in excess of 450bhp through his and he hasn't broken it....................yet.
Had a conversation a few weeks ago when I dropped the box off about alternatives and basically there isn't much...F28's are great boxes considering the abuse they take from us. The downside these days is, as you've said, getting spares for them. It's not unheard of for people to use 3 boxes to make one good one
More homework needed...

Another option is going hydraulic and using an M32 but I've been told by a pal in the dealer network that it looks like hard work....................but then so did LET conversions 15 years ago.
Cemex (John) always has one or two in and his stuff works if you get stuck. I just got shot of one as wasn't going LET route any more.
I suppose a Quaiffe F20 gear kit is out of the question? They are quite expensive but at least there is an abundance of bell housings around. Screamer has used an F18. I've never driven a car with one fitted I don't think so no idea what they are like in terms of track friendly ratios.
Such a shame about the F28. Good 'uns are great. Best one I had went up to Chesterfield way to scott1088 on Migweb. That had a quaiffe fitted. Worth contacting him to see where it is as he broke the corsa up I think.
I've got an F18CR in the GSi and it's roughly the same as an F20 to drive (near identical ratios) on track.
See what the final verdict is tomorrow...fingers crossed

The f18cr is a rare box as well so i have been told. was thinking about getting one for track car . but bought a unmolested calibra turbo instead. but is a lot of money sitting in the corner not getting used if you had three boxes.
at least its not like the jap crap like the evo gearbox or a honda type'r one that go for silly money.
what i love about this car it get's used properly and not sat in the corner getting polished .. looking forward to seeing some more vids :)

I fitted my f18 cr to my v6 mk3 no problems at all the ratios were good pretty much the same as an F20 and coped with 200lbs ft of torque being put through it although the clutch was a different story lol. My box came from a low milage front ended mk3 1.8 Gsi which are rare as not sure what else they were fitted to. I would also stay away from vectra f18's they dont seem to like pulling the bigger cars about diffs being the soft part.
Looks terminal for my F28. The car is still a while off yet but its a kick in the nuts for it. Means trying to find either a good condition F28 ( and risk it failing again), one for spares hoping that its got the bits I need or something different. Finding decent F28s is getting harder and spares are just about none existent
Bollocks...not what I wanted to hear
Have you tried dropping this guy an email to see if he has the parts? http://www.dorfbrunnen-garage.ch/englisch/aggregate.htm
Been juggling three projects and while the GSi and it's issues have kept me busy but had a few hours on the GTE...

Looks worse than it is, the rust on the floor pan is surface rust...we've had weeks with no rain and just as I decided to strip the engine bay and interior we get 2 days solid downpour. The dash has come out as it's picked up a fair bit of damage over the years and I'll be fitting a mk3 dash instead, while it's out I'll be thinning down the wiring loom to get rid of more none essentials. I got rid of the ABS and under bonnet none essential wiring a few years ago so there isn't that much left to come out but it all helps. I've also been removing the sound deadening from the floor...my least favorite job.
The steering rack mount needs a little attention again. The bracing done last time has held up very well but as usual with bits like this it's the next weakest point that fails. In this case the mounting face has started to split where the rack bolts on. The plan is to weld a plate on to strengthen it and brace the two mounting points. Other than that there is no welding needed under the bonnet other than stitch welding so quite happy
It's a sad day but I've come to realise I'm never going to get this car finished. I just don't have the cash, time or energy to get it done. I was trying to get a lockup so it could be stored nice and dry out of the way but it's not looking likely. It's been sat since july 2010 and I've done a few bits to get it prepped but nothing major towards getting it completed so it's going to get broken and sold on.
I'll be putting most of the bits on here but listing the rolling shell and leather door cards on ebay. It'll be a proper clearout as I'll be mk2less for a while yet as the van will be going in the new year too so the Zender splitter, fibreglass bonnet and everything else will be flogged

Head overruling heart is a tough one isn't it?! Hopefully it is the right decision and good luck with it all man.
Biggest problem is space...if i had somewhere dry to store it it wouldn't be an issue but as it is it's on the drive and while it's not rotten yet, it won't stay that way forever. I'll be gutted to see it go, I've had it since 2005 and got a lot of good memories...be a very sad day when it goes that's for sure

i dont want to bore you or make it about me, but i've had almost word for word identicle struggle with my red gte (also been sat since jul 2010)
whilst it isnt a financial burden as its off road, i still feels like a monkey sitting on my back. it cannot progress without cash and time, both of which are spread thinly on other supposedly non "project" cars. or you just go about living your life and 2 months pass, 4 months, 6 months. you walk past it every day and feel anxious, its like a runaway train.
it sounds like your are pretty set, but the van and mk3 seem more expendable ?? cant you just get a 50 quid 6x10 tarp and lash the gte up tight, come back to it another time ? i think you will regret it a couple years down the line if you get shot.
That's what I did lol, wrapped it up in a tarp and forgot about it for 4 years or so till recently when I had the motivation to do somthing with it. I'm glad I did not sell it now.
I've been trying to work out what to do for months...I must change my mind 10 times a day but it feels like the most logical thing to do. I'd love somewhere that I could leave it and soon as I'd had enough down tools, close the door and forget about it for a week or two. If it's sat on the drive i can't do that and with the dark nights drawing in I'm even less likely to want to do anything
The van is definitely going in the new year, it needs far too much doing for the MOT for it to be worth keeping. The GSi has plus points in that I don't need to do any bodywork at all, it's a very solid shell and I'm a bit more confident about throwing it round a track which is really all I want out of my cars at this moment in time.
I'm not doing myself any favours by looking at old photos of it...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/bartrum/GTE%20Champion/P1010358.jpg
Probley not at all :) I thought about getting shot of mine so many times over the years it was sat, or selling the bits when I was short on cash. But somhow I could never do it in the end, but you've got to do what's right for you really. Does it need a lot doing?
Sills, rear corners and a respray for the bodywork. Being sat on the drive has taken it's toll on it and it looks tatty and picked up a few dents and scratches. It needs a bonnet after splatting a pidgeon on the lanes as well...fat little feckers leave a right dent when you twat them

you could rent a council garage i do now £25 a month keeps it dry and out the way, bang some extra locks on to keep the local scum away just another option. All the years on here ive seen so many people get rid then regret it! the problem is the mk3 lol bet if you didn't have that to use you would soon find some motivation
mine also needs rear arches, sills and a respray i can't afford so know how you feel im always thinking i could brake it and buy an evo/cossie ect but don't think i could go though all the crap of building another when i wanted it back lol

every time i am laying under mine on cold concrete, rubbing down the same areas as my first gte, welding the same rotten bits and replacing the same corroded pipes, getting the same body shop to replace the same rotten sills and arches. i just think why the fk am i doing all this again ?
you will buy another mk2, and that will need the sills and arches and a respray too. but what it wont have is all the years and parts you already invested in the champ
for your own future sanity you need to mothball the champ

you will regret it,,,, get rid of the van or mk3 & cover up the champion, simplesssssss.
I've been looking on eBay and pistonheads and there aren't many GTE's up for sale at all...saw it as a sign to cover mine and leave it till I'm ready...whenever that is
The van is going for sure, its only got to last till January, the GSi ill be keeping as planned for track use. Still on the lookout for somewhere to store it to make things easier and hopefully not end up back here in 6 months time

I can't afford mine at the minute, but i'd never get rid of it. I am lucky having a garage so I can shut it away and not look at it. You will regret getting rid of it.
I wish i'd never broke up my old gte, at the time it needed too much work, the wife hated seeing it, and I needed the money but the money was soon spent. It would have made a good project to learn a few new skills.
Big change for the GTE, the engine and box are provisionally sold and soon it'll be able to go in the garage out of the rain and crappy English weather.
Not sure of the exact plan yet regards the engine but an XE is more than likely. It was good having a turbo mk2 but I want it as simple as possible from now on. Got a nice early C20XE sat in the GSi doing nothing so it's not like I need to go buy another...sort the head an it's good to go.

Thats good to hear. We're all glad your keeping it:)
It's been a grim day for the GSi but not bad for the GTE. Started stripping it ready for it to move on but I'll be keeping some bits for the GTE starting with the dash
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/bartrum/IMAG0479.jpg
The dash in the GTE got damaged back in 2005 when I had a new windscreen fitted and over the years picked up a few more scrapes so is fit for the skip. Kept a few more bits to one side to see if I can make use of them later on
Good news is I'm almost down to 2 cars...the GSi is off at the weekend and it'll just be the SRi and the GTE. Bad news is I've filled the garage again with dead Vauxhall bits again
Finding more mk3 bits that will come in useful for this as I've been stripping it. The mk3's don't have the braided strap on the gearbox that mk2's have, instead they have an earth cable as part of the starter/alternator loom. Seems a better idea so I'll be keeping that for when it comes to redoing the loom. Still got the tank to remove but may use that as well as I like the idea of the intank pump to neaten up the arse end. I think Harvey is running one on his so need to find it in his diary to see what's involved. The engine is sat in the garage just need to decide which way I'm going with it...NA or forced induction? There's most of the spare LET sat in there next to the XE...early revvy XE with a bit of boost up it?
Things are starting to look like I'm getting somewhere again and once these dark nights piss off again there'll be nothing stopping me. Even my other half has told me to get cracked on with it. Been that long off the road it's like a whole new project again lol

The sale of the engine and box isn't going ahead now so it'll still be getting the LET again
The GSI shell has gone and once I've got rid of the last few bits of it (and can get back into the garage again) work will be starting again on the GTE

Yep, I'm running a mk3 tank with uprated pump. Works a treat and you can run the tank really low while throwing it around on track without effecting pickup. I also run the mk3 block earth mod as well as a heavy duty braid for the box to chassis strap. Think it's on page 74 of my build diary as I was checking something the other day.
Had to pass on the mk3 tank as I didn't have the time to get it off...that and it was sodding freezing when I was stripping it. I'd already crushed my thumb (which still fecking hurts BTW) so didn't fancy any more injuries
Daewoos I think have the tank setup as the Mk3. My Woo/Opel/Vaux has an in tank pump and if you look inside where the pump comes out there is a plastic bucket shapped container the pump sits in... so effectively baffels that keep the fuel around the pickup.
I have one here on the floor if you want a pic. So any early Daewoo especially the Mk2 shapped ones have this tank.

I need a major clear out but its taking longer to get rid of the Mk3 bits than I thought. Most of it may end up the skip at work as I can't be arsed answering questions.about postage, fitment and the rest only to hear sod all again. I know the site well i have loads of Gsi bits i have been trying to sell but there is alot of parts about at the moment so they are not selling. Nice to have a tidy up/sort out i have a mk3 astra and a mk4 golf sat in the garden and spent the last few days stripping ready to get rid!
I'm giving some bits away because I'm fed up of people not reading the listing and asking questions they could answer themselves. Selling a GSi bumper cheap, listed all the issues with it and still getting people expecting it be be like brand new...in the end I've given it away to save the hassle. had loads of comment like "really want these" and "will they fit...?" and you never hear anything again....boils ones piss it does

Yeah mate, you want to try selling on Ebay .... 100yr old items, properly described with large clear pics, they get it for nothing and then complain it ain't mint ... I'm sick of it ....
Sometimes feel like just skipping stuff to to save the hassle ...
ebay is a nightmare at the moment, a mate of mine has sold his Escort RS2000 4 times now and none of the winning bidders has bothered to turn up. He's had to stop listing it because it looks as if there's something wrong with it. Another thing that bugs me is a few times I've had buyers complain that postage cost 50p less than I charged them
I skipped the interior from the GSi because I couldn't be doing with answering daft questions...looks like the rest of the car with be going the same way

>Not suitable for cars over 20 years old.
Wonder why?
It's probably just there as precaution, people sue companies over the slightest thing these days, so they cover their backsides as much as they can.
Here we go again...might be getting rid. Don't have the time, money and room to have a shell sat here doing nothing (apart from getting rustier) with no sign of it ever getting finished
Another thing that's making it look less likely is I've had carpal tunnel for the last few years. Using a grinder used to cause me problems for a day or 2 but the last time I used one welding my mums car for the MOT I'm still feeling 2 months on (...imagine pins and needles in your arms and hands for weeks and your knuckles feeling like you've been punching a wall). There isn't a massive amount of welding needed, both sills and rear corners, but it's enough to cause me problems. Welding isn't a problem but the grinding will be a killer
I'll not be happy to see it go but got needs must and at this point I don't need a mk2 sat doing nothing. Going to get some photo's as it is then stick it on ebay as a rolling shell

Ah not the only one to have thought about XEing a Land Rover!
Know the feeling Baz, I've given up now. TBH it takes over too much having to hoard stuff for them, and I can't be bothered with the hassle and expense.
I'm sure you'll stick around on here as I do. Not been bothered about transferring allegiance to any other site, been on a few but can't be bothered with the nobs you get on them.
Very true about hoarding, my garage is full of bits that've been there for years "just in case"

I'll be gutted to see it go, it was known as "that fucking Astra" by the local scooby and evo owners which always made me smile

Shame Baz but let's hope it gets a new home that's 2 champions potentially on ebay next week & 1 on gumtree!
It'll be a while off yet as I need to sort through everything first. Even though I've had a massive clearout I've still got loads left...I've no idea where it all came from??

You should see my place mate I want a skip & throw it all in it - if I don't sell it all off by the end of the year I think I'll kill myself!!
