View Full Version : BazW's track mk2
As the champion's now off the road till spring I needed to get myself something to use over winter. I managed to get myself another GTE16v with tax till feb and mot untill next september for £500. It's not the prettiest valver around but for 500 quid I wasn't expecting a minter.
the first thing on the to-do list is get an airbox as at the moment it's running a cheap cone filter which is seriously affecting the performance when it gets warm. it's standard apart from a superchip (the previous-previous owner optimistically badged it up as a "GTE180") and a fecking awful oval back box. bodywork wise it's got the usual scabby bits but nothing major. it also has bills and mots going back to 1997 and the condition of the interior would back up the 92k on the clock
i'll get some pics up as soon as i can

cheaper than taxis for the next few months anyway :) might tidy it up and sell it on when i'm done with it, might use it for trackdays...not sure yet. see how it scrubs up over winter then make my mind up

Get some pics up you slack ar$e (rolf2)
will do as soon as i figure out to upload them from my PS3
had a look underneath and it looks fairly solid, in fact it's in better condition than the champion. it's the wings and rear arches that let it down. i'm giving serious thought to giving it a proper restoration next spring and keeping it. the engine is very good, apart from the usual leaking sump it's quiet from cold with no smoke, knocks or rattles. to say i bought it just as a runabout it's starting to grow on me
today just had a look underneath and swapped the steering wheel for a caliba turbo 4 spoke one and also replaced the crappy after market gearknob with one I had sat in the garage. sometime this week i'll be taking it into work and valeting it inside and out so I can get a better idea of what needs doing to it.

re getting the photos from your ps3. If your putting an sd card in the front and you've got a desktop pc then you could get one of these http://www.ebuyer.com/product/125247
i've worked out how to do it, now if i could work out how to get photos from my phone to my PS3...

you can set up windows media player 11 to share your pictures, music and videos on the network as a media server. photos onto pc then view them on ps3. you can also use a program called simplecenter

managed to get some photos, they make it look better than it is though. the interior is in good condition, just needs a good clean. the rear end will soon be put back to original and the back box replaced.

yeah, sadly it's been looked after most of it's life then fallen into the hands of a t**t. luckily it's things that are easy to sort so it'll soon be presentable again

it's been said many times so who am i to argue :)
it's the ebay one, it belonged to a mate of Pembo on here who was going to use it for trackdays but a combination of moving house and moaning girlfriend meant it had to go

That reg looks familar, Whats the history of owners if it's the one I'm thinking of it was owned by a copper from new and then a vaux mechanic (which is how I would know the reg as I used to pass it on my way to work but not seen it for about a 18 months.) Unless I'm getting muddled up. Either way looks tidy enough for what you paid.
it was originally from the manchester area going on all the old bills & mots

Looks good really. :)
Reminds me a lot of mine when I first bought it, although my paint isn't that nice Mistral grey now, a bit paler sadly.
Looks like it once had morrettes, as there were indicators fitted into the bump strips at some point. And I spotted your wanted ad for a tailgate - don't blame you!
Ian.
i hate the tailgate with a passion, i can't see the point in doing it as it makes it look like it's got a fat arse. it had twin headlights but they are going back to the previous owner along with the 17's and flush boot. I think long term it'll make a good trackday car as it's solid with a good engine. it's been well over a year since i've driven an XE powered astra, i'd forgot how good they are

If it is the one I'm thinking it was it's only had the boot and lights done recently as it was completely standard when I last sore it.
booked myself on a trackday at Cadwell park next week so put the car on a diet. only thing left are the seats and dash, the front door cards are getting retrimmed and refitted. finally got rid of the flush boot, it weighed a ton due to being 90% filler. the new bootlid will just be getting a coat of primer for now, with a full respray in the new year.
started on the bootlid getting it ready for paint and working out what i'm going to do on it in the long run. the engine won't be getting anything else done to it (for now anyway ;) ) and it'll just be cage, harnesses and seats for the interior. outside it's going to be standard with the only change being the removal of the sunroof, it'll be resprayed after feb when the tax runs out and the champion goes back on the road (tucked away in the garage, away from the salt :))
the boot's primered up, not pretty but so much better than the flushed crap that was on before. got a few jobs to do before sunday but all being well this time next week it'll have attended its first trackday. the last jobs to do are, service it, replace the brake fluid with 5.1 and get the tyres fitted for the 15's. this time i'm going with yoko 539's as their grippy and cheap at 28 quid plus vat each.
cheapness is what this ones all about :)
now 4 shades of mistral grey. couldn't leave it with a white arse-end so got some cans of halfords finest mistral grey (which isn't btw but close enough for now :duh:) and made it look a bit more presentable
couldn't make it to the trackday i was booked on at cadwell due to issues with work and the sump gaskets decided it doesn't want to work anymore and got worse. not sure they'd appreciate me leaving castrol all over the track :o that's 3 trackdays and 3 times it's gone tits up. cleaned the engine bay to see where the oil's coming from and the short answer...everywhere. need to replace the gaskets on the rocker cover, dizzy and sump as they seem to be the main culprits. there's also a water leak somewhere. as yet i've not found out where although when the champion had similar symptoms on the old XE it turned out to be the water pump which decided to give up the day before Retrocars 06

aye, still a bit rough round the edges but it's not intended to be a concourse car. the last big job is the sunroof, it's the worse one i've ever had. this morning both front seats were soaking, not what you want on a cold december morning
the days of the oval back box are numbered :D
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/bartrum/P1010325.jpg
courtesy of ebay a standard 16v back box, used for 2 weeks according to the listing which looks about right as it still had all the stickers on. it's going to take as bit of work but i'll be fitting it to the stainless system that's already on the car. i've also got a set of cav GSi rims heading my way which can't come soon enough as the handling on the 17's & crap tyres in this weather is dodgy at best. i've also got a set of 17 inch league tantrums that have just been blasted ready for a coat of paint, the idea being I can use them for daily use and go with a set of R888's for the 15's for trackdays...or I might just go with Toyo T1-R's for the 15's and not bother with the 17's at all...still not decided
the intension was to go dark with the alloys but seeing as every mistral grey GTE that's appeared on the site for the last 2 weeks has got dark rims on i'll need to rethink. shame really as I used to love the way they looked on my other 16v :(
