View Full Version : Sipo's 16v GTE
Hey lads, nothing major going on with my GTE, decided to get the car sprayed etc for the summer (I need it in my life! lol) hence the wide arch kit isnt going on until the winter. However there are a few bits going on, ie i just replaced the rear discs, shoes and pads and will be changing the O/S CV joint tomorrow and thought i would log it on here so everyone can see the progress.

Got the car up on the ramp and removed the wheels ready to change the rear brakes
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y164/Sipo/DSCF0336.jpg
N/S rear stripped - didnt realise the handbrake operated shoes inside the drum, spent ages trying to get the rear brum off until my dad pointed it out lol. Was a bit of a pain trying to get the ABS ring off of the old discs and i didnt think to order new bearings, so had to get those buggers out and the retainers for them which was even more fiddely but they came out after a little perservation.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y164/Sipo/DSCF0340.jpg
Some snaps of the finished product, new discs spangling behind the wheels looks so much better and when i get the money together i will be replacing the fronts with drilled and vented. (Yes i know the calipers need repainting ;) )
Also, while the car was up in the air it was nice to see the lowering springs and shocks werent micky mouse, and the exhaust system was all Longlife too. Seeing as i only paid £350 for the car i was expecting the majority of it to be utter shite, so was pleasantly surprised.

Also, while im putting up some pics, here is my dads toy that i spent the last years of my school life building with him - tis a beast :D

Will give a little write up on how i get on with the CV joint tomorrow and also how the restoration of the bodywork goes.

didnt know u had a valver. also i think its cool you have that car at 19.

Well, it isnt the lowest of mileage cars and also needs some bodywork attention on both sides (1 of which classed the car as a write off) but its still in pretty good nick and goes like a fking rocket. I dont know how fast 16v GTE's go in general, but the cams, ehxhaust sytem and air intake seem to make a lot of differance. I have raced 3 series BMW's, civic type R's and a new 3.2 V6 vauxhall and left them all pissed right off. I literally love it and cant get enough of driving it, but at 145,000 miles it will probably need a rebuild while its off the road in the winter.
Anyhoo, where do i need undersealer exactly? :p
didnt know u had a valver. also i think its cool you have that car at 19.
Yeh im loving it! You tell the insurance company that you are a contracts manager of a company and they seem to love it. When i was insuring myself as a bog wandard electrician on site, my insurance was only £200 less on a 1.4 seat ibiza!!! Tis ridiculous.
OK a little more progress. Turned out the N/S front wheel bearing was knackered and not the CV joint as i thought ... turns out to be the drivers side one creaking now and again but was the wheel bearing on the passenger side whining. Anyways, got it all apart and so on, sent the strut to an engineers to have the bearing pressed out and another one put in. Anyways, the strut comes back but the hub was given to me seperately, they said they wouldnt press it in as it was knackered. Cheers then!! Could have fecking ordered a new one in and got it all sorted tbh, but ended up having to put it all back together as it was. This means im going to have to buy another hub and another fecking set of bearings again and get it all pressed again. Woohoo!!
Anyways heres some snaps.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y164/Sipo/DSCF0350.jpg
The cv boots were knackered also so replaced them while it was all apart.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y164/Sipo/DSCF0351.jpg
Spangly ones:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y164/Sipo/DSCF0352.jpg
Also noticed rubbing marks on the edge of my gearbox from the wheel. The car is only currently running on 15" wheels but i still have my 17" ones to put onto this as were on my lookalike. I can see this causing problems
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y164/Sipo/DSCF0349.jpg
But there ya go, i will put them on once they have been refurbished and see what they are like. If they are a bitch i will have to sell them.
Also made some progress on the bodywork yesterday (And a few steps backword as you will see) 1st of all i made a start on the fking great gouge down the passener rear wing. Doesnt look to bad in the pics acctually, but it was pretty nasty.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y164/Sipo/DSCF0354.jpg
Then i made a start with the passenger wing and investigating just how bad the smash in the ass end really was. This may cause some problems as the boot doesnt line up at the mo and after a little look its apparent they have wrapped a chain or something through the boot and pulled it out via a tree! Its pretty "Kinky" back there so i may get my Dad to weld some form of strengthening accross the back areas. Its all extra weight i dont want though :D
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y164/Sipo/DSCF0356.jpg
Once it all gets flattened back to what it should be, i will put some pics up of how the fillerwork comes out.

Top work fella. £350 is a bargain. My last one cost £350 aswell. KONI's a bonus.
Get it ready for PV for gawds sake.!!
Get it ready for PV for gawds sake.!!
I'll try :D
Cash has gone a little hard lately so no major works happening. A nice £60 fine courtesy of my Seat Ibiza running out of tax without me knowing and a steep phone bill too. However, on a bonus side I was given a GTE rear bumper, front bumper, passenger wing mirror and some odds and sods. My uncle also has the digi dash and a few under bonnet sensors that i may need at a later date which is pretty cool.
Last night was meelow on the "Car graft" side of things, got the washer jets smoothed over on the front bumper and that was pretty much it. Will get some more pics up on Sunday, when i will be straightening out the boot (Hopefully) and also filling the rather large hole that i founf in the seals:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y164/Sipo/DSCF0353.jpg
Thx for viewing, will keep updating.
Ok just to update a little - finally sold the Seat Ibiza. Lost a fking lot of money seeing as i bought it for a runaround. Sold it for £375 (- the £60 fine and £10 to garage it and £20 taking my mates for a beer) basically leaves me with £280. Seeing as i bought the car for £700 this is a bit of a stinger! Sht happens though and i had to take what he was offering hense this is being put straight to one side and going towards my respray. When the final touches get done i will post it all up and obviously how the paint work comes out :D
Looking to have it all done and sprayed 3 weeks max.

Some good work being done Sipo. You always loose money whenever you sell a car.. I lost loads on my ex Nova.. Btw, what cams are you running if you don't mind me asking you? Those are the next on my list...
Good work there matey, :)
Odd that your getting rubbing on the gearbox tho

Not too sure mate, i was told it was cammed, but it may have been said just to persuade me more to buy it. However it does have a lumpy idle and is pretty quick. Had another race with the new 3.2l V6 vectra earlier who was pissed off that he had to move over for me to go past :D - I swear having a long strip of dual carriageways near me will cost my license ... :o .When I get some time kicking about and the motivation i may try to have a look to see if they are uprated. My garage is a 5 - 10 min drive from my house tho and a lot of the time i cant be bothered :D
Also, Tom, after i posted that i realised that it was more than likely the previous 16" wheels that caused that rubbing. Even so - it does seem a little odd tbh.
Very odd, as I have no probs with having 17s on mine.
Just another small update, the rust on my passenger side seal was acctually really bad, so the majority of the seal is being replaced. Will post pics of how it looks when i get the chance

That's quick. My 8V can see off 2.5 V6 Vectra's (not seen a 2.6 one yet).
Have you checked the offset of your wheel. Maybe wrong offset caused the rubbing. Althought I thought the common lower offset numbers caused outside edge rubbing not inside rubbing.
OK another update - the car failed MOT on hanbrake cable and front n/s bearing. Had the front strut changed (Thanks Steve!) to save myself £120 for the bearing flange ... also had lower ball joint replaced and obviously the handrake. I paid one of the lads that works at my dads garage £50 t do the works. Unfortunately the tosser changed the lowering spring on the strut, but not the shock absorber. So i not have 3 solid corners and one wobbly corner, which means it gets a little scary on unsmooth roads at speed. On the plus side though, its getting sprayed the weekend before retro show, although it may not have the badboy bonnet on it and wont have the modified front bumper. Its all good though, as i have spares which i will put splitters etc on then put them on the car. Progress has slowed right down, but once its sprayed i will be happy and can concentrate on sorting out the alloys etc then. Will plonk some more pics up over the coming weeks.

Just wondering what cost £120? I have just done both my front wheel bearings and they were about £35 each from Vauxhall.

its getting there mate! what a twat not changing the insert!
Richie, the casing that the bearing sits in. Between the bearing and the hub. Its £130, hense Steve selling me the complete strut for a tenner saved me £120 lol.
Aye im well pissed off about him not swapping the insert Stevey, handles absolutely shite at the mo at speed and means i have to strip it all over again ARGGGHHHHH !!!

19-06-2005, 10:57 PM
Oh I see, you mean the cast strut bit was damaged somehow?
Aye, when i was swapping the wheels to refurm my 17" wheels one of my mates was helping me. I didnt check his work as he is forever working on cars, but he didnt tighten the front wheel up properly. I drove off and could feel wobble, but thought it might have been one of the wheels out of balance. It got really bad so i pulled over and the wheel was all ovr the shot. Tightened it up, but the vibration caused the bearing to collapse, which in turn put all the weight onto that cast piece. Bit of a nightmare and has seen me forking out around £100 in all, as ive already swapped the bearing and had it pressed etc.
Most definitely a lesson learnt !!

that can be quite annoying sometimes needing to put 5!
Right another small update. The car has been scotched all over ready to be sprayed on Monday, there a couple of little bits of fillerwork etc that need tidying, which it shall be going into the workshop for tomorrow morning. Doorshuts, bootshut and some of the under bonnet shut have been sprayed matt black as im going for an orange and black combination.
I'll get the painter to take some pictures as it gets sprayed etc for you all to see ... im hoping the orange wont turn out 5hite :D :D
Orange! Nice and lairy!! I take it you like to be noticed! :D
Hell yea matey, i want people to see me coming! Want people to recognise the car going around too, so when little tossers try racing me with their little girlies in the car, they dont try a second time :D
Lads while im typing i have a question. I raced a 400cc motorbike last night, i dunno what it was they are always goddamn letters, it said summut on the side about twin ported bla bla. He came after me on a roundabout, i was on the inside lane and he was on the outside lane, we both came off the roundabout and he was alongside me in my blackspot until 75 - 80 mph then he started drifting off in my rear view. I was pretty shocked tbh and my mates couldnt get their head around it either. I know he was racing cus i seen him coming for me and lets be honest, if he was driving like he was and in the outside lane he would have overtaken me.
Is that normal? I would have thought he'd chew me up and spit me out!

like the idea half half spray job what style you going to do it?

I did want to go for the half and half spray job, but bottled it as it was a lot of money and could have turned out something i didnt like!
Basically mine is black shuts, slightly smoked windows, ive left the black rear strip and everything else black i have resprayed. Its nothing amazing, but with all the niggly strips and screw covers resprayed and the calipers etc, everything looks so much cleaner.
It has gone to the workshop today and been fully prepped, i will be getting it back monday night and will post some snaps of it.
Ok here it is, the bit you have all been dreading! I have indeed "ruined" a MK2 Astra, but i totally love it :D
Before getting the bumpers etc back on:

Got the rear bumper and light etc back on:

And a snap of the front once it had all been put back together:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y164/Sipo/DSCF0409.jpg
Unfortunately my batteries were low in the difi cam so there were the only 3 i got to take and the front on shot is blurred :(
Once ive got my 17's on there etc i am going to be totally loving this car again! For your info, the paint is retro also and has come from a 1970's Ford paint scheme. Ive got a few more bits to black on the car to make it all look spanking before the car show and it needs a hell of a clean to get rid of all the dust etc, so ive got a busy few nights before the car show!

i think it looks good! a lot better than it did! i think the fuel cap looks silly! get a alloy one! what wheels have you got for it?
lol dude i more than likely will get an alloy one for it, totally skinted myself with the spray job though!Ive got the same wheels as before, they havent been refurbed or anything yet though, ive been slacking with them tbh. But i dont have the money for the tyres anyways so it doesnt make that much odds! Did you get any info on those tyres from your mate ?

Looks like you did an alright job straightening the back end out. It's looking a lot better than when at Cheddar. Have you put new arches on? An alloy cap will look better but the standard one doesn't look bad IMO.
I'll not comment on the colour, it's certainly noticeable :) I notice the chav in the second pic already eyeing your car up to steal though.
ROFL i was waiting for someone to comment on Aaron. I dont think that is a burberry cap, but it looks like it on the picture! The guy who sprayed it, thats his cousin. Its had new sills but not new arches, as they were solid and have definitely been replaced recently. All in all it isnt bad. Theres a couple of patches where the black is showing at the bonnet etc that i want to sort and the spoiler has a fking huge run!But these things are to be expected and as long as it all get sorted i cant complain on the quality of the job. All in all im happy with it :D

I think the spray job looks good Sipo - a bold choice of colour - reminds me of the guy who worked for the TNT delivery company and sprayed his escort the same orange as the delivery trucks!
How much did it cost OOI? Will definately grab attention at the shows you go to! Are you colour coordinating the engine bay? Polished metal and orange silicone will go down well i should imagine.

The colour suits the car very well :) - Even better you've kept the black strip!
lol cheers lads :D
Overall its costing me a fair bit of money, the sprayjob was £550 all in all i think. I didnt have to pay for the sills to be welded as my dad owns a garage and did it. I dont even think im paying for the sills as it was my birthday on friday. I think the gubbins for the MOT are for my birthday.
The under bonnet will be matt black as with the other out-of-sight stuff. The engine covers will be colour coded and all under bonnet accessories cleaned, battery cover etc to tidy up the image. I dont know about colour coding hoses for the moment, im guessing its expensive!
All in good time though, you have seen how long it has taken to get it sprayed - so god knows how long the rest will take!!

Looks like a good job. I'd have your wheels sprayed black now.
lol if you did have trouble spotting me, i'd be a little concerned tbh :D Wheels that are on there are only a temporary measure so i will leave them as they are. I think a set of 15's in black, with a bold looking kinda wheel, flat etc would look really effective, but my 17" wheels will be going on so i am keeping them silver but modding them a little with orange :D

Hell NO! 400cc bikes are prime for racing in Hot hatches. I discovered this in my Nova turbo. 600cc are a bit too quik though until I get some NOS.
Sipo i got quoted £1000 for a respray which garage did you use and how much work did you do yourself
I paid around £600 all in all. Did a lot of the prep work myself, all the flatting back etc and masking off. (There are a few dodgy patches!) but the guy who works at the body shop supplied all my filler etc free of charge and the black aerosol etc. The car still hasnt been flatted or polished but it doesnt need it. Depending on where you are in wales matey, it may be cheaper for you to get it done with my lads. You are more than welcome to pop to Bristol and my mate will look at it and give you a price.

Astrayorkie, bodyworking is so simple. You at least may as well have a go yourself, even if you were to get arches welded in preofessionally, then do the fillerwork yourself.

Did you see the quads while you were at Cheddar? I know Richie was having a fiddle with them. If you did see them you will know that the 4 lamps need changing as the backs have rusted. Mine take up the indicatorsas well, they are the wider ones. Based on the fact they are imisher i suppose I'd want £40 for them, as I am now half tempted to fit them, I could create a nice effect my blacking them I think. I am also blacking the vents on my bonnet etc too.
Anyways, wandering off the subject there, if you would like my quads they are £40 and yes you will need to reposition the indicators. There are a set of morette quads hovering as to whether they should be sold or no in the for sale section as well ;)
