GTE dashboard and centre console fitted - centre console to be modded - anyone ever doen this?
What do you mean by this? The surround for the gearstick, handbrake and storage bin?
If so I woiuldnt bother, as it will be too "short" to reach the heater controls as you'll have the 8v floor pan.
Sounds like a cool project, get plenty of pix and get 'em on here:)

Yep thats the surround that i mean.

apparently it will need modding to fit around the gearstick, probably a bracket to hold it at correct height

Should be looking at doing this weekend after next, we will be able to have a proper look when i remove it and then i will know if it will or won't

main reason for changing it is i want a black dash and centre console as mine is currently grey :(

thanks for the comment :) will let you know what happens

Kris
28-04-2005, 09:04 PM
Just swap it with SXi stuff as this is black and wont need modding as it came from an 8v floor pan

Heathercdi
28-04-2005, 09:10 PM
but no checklights with sxi, was there?

Kris
28-04-2005, 09:13 PM
No but are you meaning the actual dash board or the plastics down to the gear stick ?

Heathercdi
28-04-2005, 11:29 PM
No but are you meaning the actual dash board or the plastics down to the gear stick ?

both :) , the gte dash won't fit properly with my centre console (around gear stick) so i need to put gte one in to fit properly with each other - if you know what i mean??

astrasteve23
29-04-2005, 01:48 AM
the GTE dash is the same as any other dash apart from the check control isn't it? so fit a black GTE dash and a black 8v center consol/handbrake surround bit! i tried fitting a 16v centre consol and it def wont fit!

Kris
29-04-2005, 03:43 AM
The gear surround shouldnt cause an issue as far as an 8v surround should go on to a 16v dfash and heater controls ,i dont think there was any difference ?.

Ross_Mk2
29-04-2005, 08:28 AM
Well i installed a GTE black dash in my 1.6 8v ok, well i would'nt say ok but its in :D one of the hardest thing done on the astra to date

Kris
29-04-2005, 08:31 AM
Dashboard swaps are a challenge ,or do i mean headache ?. I can never get the heater controls to work properly again .

Heathercdi
29-04-2005, 08:50 AM
Right need to get hold of an 8v centre console then

will still probably do the dash first, i can hang on for the centre bit until i find one out of an 8v

Thanks Guys

Kris

Same here but i dunno if mine worked before, my centre heaters don't get hot with the outer ones, is this right?

The centre vents only blow cold anyway so theres nothing wrong there:)

Kris

my trouble seems to be the cables for the controls ,without a doubt theres always one that wont budge .

took the car down the strip at the vauxhall speedshow on Monday and got a 16.9 run, thought that was pretty cool

First time i went up against a cally t, the bloke was quite upset afterwards as i got to the line first - apparently he was only running on 3 cylinders - doesn't matter if you win by a mile or an inch, winning is winning :p

was a good laugh going up the strip but not really an action packed day :)

went up against a Astra merit 1.4 who wanted a race heres the vid

I now have the GTE dash in the car, my original centre console is staying in the car as it fits snuggly with the gte dash
Looks much better but need to get the check lights wired up to finish it off :)

Looking good. Are you doing anything about the rust on the join between inner wing and chassis? Now would be a good time, just need to power wire brush it out then kill with Jenolite.

get it stitch welded to give it a bit more stregnth!

I was going to do that to my CDi but decided not too. Nearly 3 years of abuse and its still OK. Wouldnt hurt but not sure if its necessary TBH.

richie00boy
13-06-2005, 10:48 AM
Cool. So many people would leave it and it seems daft to when you are extending the life of a car with another engine.

Wire brush on angle grinder followed by loads of Jenolite rust treatment, coated with a couple of coats of No 1 Rust Beater then Re-Paint Coach Enamel or proper body colour paint is what I do.

icv valve has been changed and idle is fine
exhaust has been modded using front half of GTE exhaust onto the 2nd half of 1.8 exhaust, still slightly raspy but not as bad....

she is looking into retrimming car interiors more full on, so I wouldn't like to say how much she would do other jobs for, but I am sure she would be more than reasonable

agree mod the backseats to take headrests and that will finish it off nicely.

Who is retrimming the seats for you?

Heathercdi
07-08-2005, 01:17 PM
I don't like headrests in the back, I did have some for it but blocks my view out of rear screen as i'm a short arse

friend of mine is doing the retrim, she is looking into retrimming cars fulltime but is doing them alongside her job at the moment so would do them a bit at a time as she has done mine, my seats are vinyl, she can do leather but a lot more expensive. if anybody wants more details and prices send me a PM - very reasonably priced interiors that are good quality :)
she can also repair if you have an interior with a worn bolster or stitching etc

Rear arches to be repainted

Passenger side sill, front and rear bumper sprayed up, drivers side sill replaced and sprayed, 2 holes in front footwells and 1 hole in rear floor pan welded up and then wax-oiled

only GTE 16v's have the different linkage that comes through the bulkhead. all other models 4 or 5 speed have the other linkage. i think you can modify the standard linkage or cut hole and fit 16v one. never done it tho so wouldn't be able to give any advice.

you only need to cut a hole in the bulk head for gear linkage if you use the F20 box on the XE. I have an F16 box on my XE so didn't have to cut any holes

F16 = quicker acceleration

to be honest i've had 130mph out of mine and she was still pulling so i'm not sure on the losing top end speed. I'll let you know what she'll do when i'm brave enough..... :o :)

my car has 4 holes on the floor that need to be welded

1 just below the bulkhead (in the passenger footwell), 1 along the inner sill (drivers footwell) and 2 in the drivers side rear footwell

am gutted about it, especially as Joe took a chisel and hammer to it, to see how bad it was :-X

and to top it off after knowing all of the above, VOSA pull me over today, luckily they just check the lights, handbrake and tyres. They kindly inform me that one rear tyre is below the legal limit and that if the police had pulled me I would have a fine and 3 points on the license.

Needless to say I have 2 new toyos on the back, the other one was close to the limit so I replaced both for £92

The plan:
Steve to weld up all the holes
Hammerite all the floor
Waxoyl all of under floor (after sill replaced)
Fit new carpet asap

Thats bad news there Heather. The hole in the passenger footwell opened up a can of worms for me as there is a box section below this which contains the captive nuts for the rear wishbone mount. It took a sand blaster and 4 or 5 plates to put it right.
I think Steve will need a steady supply of tea and pieces to keep him going. :D

It is right over the box section, didn't seem too bad after the initial bashing with the old hammer but we'll see

haven't done much to the car lately, felt a bit gutted after finding the holes in the floor. Hopefully the car will be welded at the weekend and then I can put the carpet in

then I can crack on with putting sideskirts on, putting new wing on and then get the bits done that need spraying

Some of you may know that one of the pulleys for my cambelt disintergrated whilst my boyfriend was driving my car a week before last Tuesday. I managed to buy a cav GSI to break - use the head of it to repair my engine. BTW all 16 valves were stuck out. This has taken until today to repair due to having wrong cam belt kit, then wrong cam belt but correct pulleys etc etc. So glad it is back running now but feels wierd to drive.....

just thought i'd update the thread :)

sorry haven't posted on here for a while due to me having an absolute nightmare with my car

only paid 100 for the cav (which is still on the drive waiting for more people to want parts of it - give us a shout if you want anything, its a 2WD Cav GSi)

Once I had the car back and running again for a week, bloody thing broke down again, just wouldn't start, checked and the cam belt had come loose. Luckily it hasn't broken any valves this time.....the tensioner won't seem to hold the belt at all. Have got my dad to come and have a look at it on Saturday.

On top of that, I've stripped the car out ready to be welded for its MOT and the hole in the passenger foot well looks really bad. Its the section where the wishbone bolts onto the chassis...

anybody else ever had their astra go in the same spot and had it welded or did you have to scrap??

I'm thinking of re-shelling as a possibility......am pretty gutted though as i've washed her and she's gleaming and looks lovely...bloody cars

Most Astras have a bit rust in the foot wells, it's in par with back arches, but most people dont look cause its under the carpet.

Have a look at the repair GTEMAN has done..

The car is on the road so my fellas not too keen on welding it in the street, hopefully we can get it running and into the garage then at least he won't be welding in the road.....bloody thing....we must all be mad to keep on doing all this welding and fixing of mk2 astras
