View Full Version : Self Refurbing Cav GSI wheels

This weekend I was planning to start refurbing my Cav GSI wheels that are now tyre-less.

So far I have bought some AluOxide paper and some wet and dry for smoothing down later.

Crapy weather has prevented me doing anything but start.

Here is how far I have got:

Basically I have started with the wheel most in need of refurbing and I have sanded the cracked lacqure and pits in the wheel.

A couple of questions for you all....

1) Do I actually need to remove all the lacqure before the wheels will accept paint?

2) Once I get to the painting stage which paint will be the best type for a Matt finish - i'm not too sure what colour I'm going for yet, prob white or regular silver?

right, my method invloves a damn good sand, not really needing to get all the laquer of no.

Then a quick go with some high build primer to check for imperfactions and iron them out.

For the final finish I use Hammerite spray can paint, its the gogs if you get the finifh right, very glassy and durable. Its very think so you must make sure you clear the nozzle out in between coats, else it will block up, and use think layers to build to finish up.

Never had any peelage using this method and neither have any of my mates.

Of out to do my Calibra Turbo wheels in a second, if I can drag myself away from the Grand Prix.

Thanks for the reply Brett.

I was thinking of using Hammertite :thumbsup: thats a good tip about using the primer to check everything is smooth.

I'll be having another go as soon as the weather improves.

Ideally want these done for Billing

You don't need to remove the existing coating (not lacquer) if it's sound. The areas sanded back to bare metal ideally should be primed with etching primer for alloy. It won't hurt at all if you use etching primer for the whole wheel, it sticks to the plastic powder coating better than normal primer.

The closest match to the original silver I have found is Rover Silver Leaf Metallic by Hycote. Then lacquer on top.

I did mine yesterday, just went to check on it in the garage and it had come out really well, except for someones gone and got some dust on the wet paint yesterday evening!!!

quick sand down and another coat tonight now:(

Any more progress James? Just noticed the peeling coating at the wheel edge - did you rub that back to sound after the pics? If found that aspect to be one of the biggest problems as often under the peeling there was corroded metal.

I said I would never refurb a set again due to the work involved and how pants paint is, but I just keep toying with the idea of finishing some in Plastikote chrome look paint. It's not massive shiny, more of a shimmer to it that I wonder if it might look good.
