is there a standard vauxhall gear box out there other than the f20 which will fit to a red top which has a ratio which will give more bottom end performance?

        Re: gear boxes

You could change the final drive ratio as Quaife offer different ratios. Think they are about £350. F16 and F18 came of Astra mk2/mk3 as well as Cav mk3 to name but a few. Basically any big block box will fit the XE.

F16 from MK2 Cavalier SRI130 is supposed to be particularly low geared.

            Re: gear boxes

all the close ratio F16 and F20 are identicle ratios

the only difference is the final drive.

the cav sri130 has a 3.72FD from memory which would be good, but the mk2 cav has a different rear engine mount setup ontop of hte gearbox so wouldnt be a direct swap.

the mk1 astra gte/ early 1.8 mk2 gte would be the one for a direct swap with a 3.72 FD, but are rare and would be 20 years old.

i think the solution is a custom final drive in the F20, since all the internal gears are interchangeable between F16 through F20, then youd have a choice between 3.42 and 4.1 !

the mk1 astra gte came with the f16 box in it, but i don't rate them as there a very weak box and forever loosing their gears . better of with f20 i say.

You can use the F16 from a Deawoo Nexia 16v which came with a 3.94:1 final drive. These are fairly cheap and easy to get hold of. I've been using one for a couple of seasons withover 200bhp and haven't had any problems with it. The lower ratio is a useful improvement over the F20.

If you want to stick with an F20 then another source (if you can find one) is the 4wd box fitted to the Cavalier GSI which had a 3.72:1 final drive. You will need to use your existing F20 casing with the gear cluster from the 4wd box and fit the 4wd crown wheel onto the F20 diff. You can swap all the bits over without taking the gearbox off the Astra.

                      Re: gear boxes

                      4x4 F20 is 3.72, 2WDs are mostly 3.55 with the odd 3.42
