I have been looking for a donor car to help me finish the Astra.Nothing has turned up at the right price/time, its not been the right colour etc. In the meantime we have made good progress with the restoration and I have managed to get more or less all the parts that were needed.Unfortunately this has not stopped me scanning E-Bay and last Sunday we spotted this little beauty!Won it! We set off for the big city last night at 7-30 in the van towing one mahoosive car trailer approx 22 foot by 7foot! 150 miles in 3 hours,1 hour lashing it on before another 150 mile 3 hour journey home..

Cheers chap for missing the end of the auction although you might have saved a disaster if you had won it.How I didnt squash someone or their car with the trailer was a mystery to me.
Big Drifter, the plans are to get it mot'd and enjoy it this summer until the other is done then I might strip it, repair the shell and turbo it.

micky taylor
12-04-2007, 10:29 PM

Taken the servo, and expansion tank out to gain access to the o/s steering rack mount today. It was coming away as usual although not much rust to complicate things so I have welded it up.Just a bit more to do tomoz and it will be back together..:bananajump:

Well its been some time since we have posted anything on this diary, mainly cos nothing has been done to it.Just been enjoying driving about in it..However we have been collecting bits for it so that we can make a good start on it sometime this year.I have had time to assess it whilst pottering around in it and from a bodywork point of view it is solid, especially underneath.
Today we have been to Calais to pick up a free case of wine (thanks P&O:thumbsup: ) and to meet Steve (Duick) from MIG. We picked up the rest of the body panels we need to sort this great car out properly from him....

mick g
20-05-2008, 09:05 PM
Well the mot and tax run out at the end of the month so it is the ideal time to start the resto.I have been collecting parts for this project since we bought it last year and have all the body panels to complete the car so its time to crack on..
The car is more or less as it was when new and that is how it will remain so we will be cleaning/painting and refitting parts this time and replacing hoses and bushes etc.. More to come including lots of pictures over the summer:thumbsup:

mick g
14-06-2008, 08:29 PM
Today we started on the champ. It is going to be restored to its origional spec which is good as that is how it is now. It will mainly be a full bodywork and paint job and the rest of the parts will be cleaned up and painted as necessary. Some pictures from today....

Bit more rust! (I will find plenty more)

"Dave" the project manager for this resto at work.. Note how the tailpipes are perfect for putting your mug of tea on!
The first real job is going to be replacing the nearside rear quarter so we may start cutting the existing one off tomorrow...

We have been busy again today... Stripped out the rest of the seats, centre console and carpet so we can check out the floorpans from inside... This is going to be a doddle compared to the violet bitch.. They just need a couple of small patches putting in.

I think it helps when you have done it a couple of times Ian, your right about the b post too.. I was wondering whether the whole car would fold in two when i cut the rear quarter off but it is a very sound shell on the whole

its where all the strength is though, and will flex slightly without it.

what stops you from welding in a new quarter at its now relaxed state, and having a eternally banana shaped astra ?

Thats the plan Darren as it hasn't moved a bit, i thought i may have had to tweak it back up slightly but i dont think it will be necessary..( just going to nip to the garage to see it hasn't collapsed)

Been at it again today, doesnt look much but it all takes time... Removed all the rubbery underseal and stripped the inner arch back to bare metal, then welded the inner arch repair section in..
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l121/mickg_2006/Project2TheChampion/Picture001.jpg
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l121/mickg_2006/Project2TheChampion/Picture002.jpg
Then fabricated a repair section for the sill stiffener and welded that on..
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l121/mickg_2006/Project2TheChampion/Picture003.jpg
Etch primed all the bare metal before spraying on coat of primer:) :)

I have finally managed to get round to having a poke around at the champion and have finished preparing the rear quarter for welding to the shell.. I might even get it on this week!!! However I was curious as to the condition of the front panels and inner wing so whilst I had a spare couple of hours today I got dismantling.. Its a lot easier when you have been and done it all before:thumbsup:
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l121/mickg_2006/Project2TheChampion/Picture013.jpg

Luckily we picked this genuine inner wing up from Billing for a tenner so I shall be able to make a repair panel from it.. I also have a light panel so that will make the job much easier
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l121/mickg_2006/Project2TheChampion/Picture012.jpg
The front panel is absolutely perfect.... I am intending to make a top job of this shell as it is such a good base to start with... Hopefully more pics to come:thumbsup:

http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l121/mickg_2006/Project2TheChampion/Picture019.jpg
We cut out the inner wing and the edge of the headlight panel out and made up the repair panels to fit, then butt welded them into position.. The copper tube in the last picture was positioned under where I was welding as the gap was a little too big and it allows you to fill the gap with weld, the welding wire doesnt stick to copper:thumbsup: Hopefully I will finish this bit off tomorrow or sunday.

The end of week report is as follows.... Managed to crack the windscreen and shatter the rear screen despite having all the gear to do it properly:( .. Smack bottoms all round..
Started to strip the engine bay of parts and prepare the offside for the new rear quarter.
Also picked up a genuine hatch on saturday as the one on the car is too rusty, bargain price really:thumbsup:.. Also sourced genuine front indicators, tail lights, front fog lights,
weather strips for under the headlights, new sunroof seal, and a new front grill. Pictures when they arrive:thumbsup: All being well the rear quarter is coming off tomorrow...

Thanks dudes, its completely shagged the front grass up mind so as soon as the new garage is available its going in.. The plan is to turn it upside down so we can do a top job on the floorpan but the car needs to have been properly welded up again first:thumbsup:

Whilst I've been away we had another delivery of rocking horse poo!!
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l121/mickg_2006/Project2TheChampion/Picture034.jpg
This is the missing piece of plastic trim we need for the front bumper for a set of new mouldings
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l121/mickg_2006/Project2TheChampion/Picture035.jpg
These fit between the bumper and the headlights for those that dont know... I'm surprised to be able to get them:applause:

This is the one we are missing to make the pair
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l121/mickg_2006/Project2TheChampion/Picture037.jpg
This also makes a pair of rear lights...
We just need one Carello headlight for the set.
