View Full Version : bartrum's turd polishing
Things are finally starting to happen now so i thought to keep the momentum going i'd keep a record plus it'll be good to look back on when its (hopefully) finished
First job was to fit a bonnet courtesy of ebay, suprised what good condition it was in. ones i'd looked at before were never as tidy as they'd been described over the phone but this one will need nothing doing to it except fix a small dent in it (that i did taking out of the back my car :o ) The next job was to fit the front bumper that i bought a few weeks ago, went for one of these for a few reasons but mainly because when its behind you you'll have no idea its a 16v

Got the arches started today, helps when one of your mates is a welder. Planned on doing both arches today but unfortunately the drivers side was worse than i thought so ended up spending most of the day on one side. Also the sill, which i thought was ok turned out to be rotten as well :(

Some nifty fabrication patched up the holes in the inner wing. The biggest problem was one of the previous owners, rather than roll the arches to fit bigger wheels, had cut them meaning the arches had only a bit of surface rust but behind them they were pretty much gone. While my mate took care of the welding I got on with tidying up the front drivers door as it was covered in scratches.

Tomorrow, hopefully, will get the other side done then first thing tuesday get a sill ordered

what color are you going to repaint it man? Go on black you know you want to, it will look really moody with those black alloys as well!
Keep up the good work!

Looking good! Always great to see a MK2 being given a 2nd chance!
Had a biatch of a day today, first job was to help my mate (who's doing the welding for me) get the cylinder head off his 1.8 cav. That ended up taking ages as nothing went right.
finally got started on the passenger side arch to find the arches i'd bought as a pair weren't a pair at all. On the drivers side the arch fitted fairly flush against the rear quarter & were pretty easy to fit, right down to having 2 little marks for the rear bumper brackets.
The other side were a pain in the arse from start to finish. The panel was put up against the quarter to mark out were to cut, when it came to tacking them in it started to bow out in the middle the only way to stop it doing that meant having a 2mm gap along one edge & the bodyline being slightly out that meant having to weld in some strips to fill em as best as possible.
while a had a minute to cool off i had a look round this
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/bartrum/mints1.jpg
its in my mates workshop to get ready for its mot. I do like these (waits for abuse)& they'd be my 2nd choice after the gte
after a good half hour cooling off i got back on with trying to get mine something near road worthy, after loads of pissing about decided it was somewere near & any thing left can wait till it gets prepped for paint.
Last welding jobs to do are remove the passenger side door lock & fit a new sill on the drivers side which i should be able to get tomorrow

in 2 weeks its the doncaster show hoping it'll be painted by then.
There's a nicer series 1 than that goes to my mates place its got a full zvh conversion & runs on 17" diamond cut rs alloys,

he will see sense one day and start doin XE's and LET's!
picked up a new sill today. They already had them in stock, must be a few rusty astras knocking about
Get that on the the bodyworks pretty much done bar a bit of filling & a coat of paint :) All i need to do after that is sort the brakes (front & rear), which is already taken care of, & get all the little jobs done.

man I love series 1 RST's!!!
These are a couple of bits to go on. The twins i'm still not sure about, they need a few tweaks to get them to sit right.
The cambelt & rocker cover i'm in the process of polishing up. It was white but i decided to have a go at polishing, its never gonna be "mirror" finish but it looks a bit better imo.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/bartrum/STUFF.jpg
Gonna fit these as well & keep the cav gsi 15's and get them fitted with some decent rubber for trackday use
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/bartrum/snipers.jpg
Still got a rear strutbrace to fit, but having a problem with the nut on the top of the shocker refusing to let go, i think it needs a soak in wd40 for a month or 2.

Looks like a lovely job in the making there.
I'll be happier when mine gets to that stage.
Ian.
it helps put everything on here then, at least you can actually see the progress your making & it encourages you to keep going
Called at ian jemison engineering today to get one of my 17's fixed, its got a small crack on the back of the rim. I wasn't expecting it to be done till next week but turns out it'll be ready tomorrow :) & it'll only cost £35 :) :) Everywhere else i've tried has quoted double & had a bit of a shitty attitude when i said I wanted to get more quotes & one place telling me that it wasn't possible and to go & buy another wheel
I've never seen anything like it the workshop was full of bent alloy wheels including a seriously kerbed 18" compomotive mo that looked scrap but turned out to be repairable even tho someones had a go already with a big F.O. hammer & cracked it.
He's also got this sat in the corner
http://www.alloywheelrepairs.com/porsche.htm
Everythings stopped at the moment as my mates workshop is stacked out with rs turbo's having zvh conversions done & can't get mine in till at least next weekend at the earliest :(
the pile of bits waiting to go on is getting bigger by the day, the V6 setup i bought from TomStickland arrived on monday to go with the set of new rear disc's & pads ive got.
I picked up my repaired alloy last friday & undecided what colour to paint them. Either keep them silver, paint them in the same anthracite ive got on my current rims or wait till the cars respayed & paint them white to match the car.
Heres a pic of the alloys when i tried them on the car, before i'd started any of the bodywork

id go anthracite or white with the wheels! both would look good!
might put a poll up, let everyone else decide
Does you neighbor work for dent wizard ,that will come in handy with a mk2 .

no, thats me
Shotblasted the brake calipers this morning so i can give them a coat of paint to freshen them up a bit. Had to be careful to stay clear of the rubber seals but even taking my time it didn't take long at all.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/bartrum/blastedbrakes01.jpg
Could have done with my car on the road this weekend as its the Doncaster show & as of yet ive only seen 1 mk2 (hundreds of f ucking saxo's & corsa's tho :( ).
had to make a list of the jobs still to do as had some bad news today, due to new company "restructuring" i am going to be made redundant so i'll be needing my car ready sooner than i'd planned.
Still to do-
MOT which means get the last sill welded on, filled & painted
i'll have to leave the respray for another month at least meaning its gonna look a bit of a chav mobile till its painted
also for the mot i'm going to have to fix the power steering as its sprung a leak over the last few weeks.
The calipers came up well after being blasted .
gave them a coat of silver hammerite so they stay nice & clean. had to be careful with the shot blaster but it beats spending hours with a wire brush

i have a spare pas rack and pipes for sale. all worked good and no visible leaks when it was last used, it was last driven a week ago and now it is off the car.
While out & about today spotted a scrapyard out near sheffield, I need a few bits so I thought i'd have a quick look round see if they've got any mk2's in.
I was originally just after some interior bits like the switch covers for the dash, i was looking in an old astra van when I noticed a switch for adjustable headlights.
Not seen may of these so I thought I might as well have then as one of the things I need to do for the mot is sort out the aim on the headlights
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/bartrum/adjlights01.jpg
Although theres some rust on the outside they are mostly good condition and only took 10 minutes to fit (would've taken 5 if i'd realised there were rubber covers on the plugs in the car :o ) as the wiring is already in.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/bartrum/adjlights02.jpg
Also removed the front foglight switch as I haven't got any front fogs anymore

Steve i could do with the stereo surround bit - where the previos owner had a stereo nicked its a little knackered. Would i be able to sort one with you for Sunday for a fiver or whatever?
Another 16v is going to die i'm afraid. I can't justify spending anymore time and money on it, i'd going use the chance i've got to find a gte that's not going to need much doing to it (if there is such a thing).
One of the reason's to get rid is i've never been happy with the way the arches went on. There was a large dent on the offside rear quarter that wouldn't come out due to the metal being stretched and the other side the crap quality arch meant the car would need a serious amount of filler on the arse end to make it look something like :(
hopefully i'll be starting a new diary soon with gte that'll just need routine maintenance and the rest of the time can be spent making it better rather than chasing round getting it back up to standard

Shame, it looked like it was coming along nicely. What was the make of the good panel and what was the make of the rubbish panel?
Its now gone to the car park in the sky. Got as much as I could off it then off it went to the scrappers. :(
