Ive been meaning to to one of these threads for a while. Me and my car had an argument with a wall the day before i left the Isle of Lewis to study in Glasgow...
The day before...
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l163/inneskong/Mybby.jpg
Then the night after that...
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l163/inneskong/DSC00006.jpg
this pic looked a bit worse than it acctually was...
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l163/inneskong/DSC00007.jpg
Me being stuck in Glasgow i havent had much time to get home to work on the car but i manage to steal a few days of college to get home and do what i can. The total damage was...Two headlamps, a bumper, foglamps, inner wing, bottom crossmember, steeringwheel, two outer wings, bonnet and my face:( The last picture there you can see ive taken all the wingbolts out to have a look at the inner wing, thats why the picture looks a bit worse!
This is how she looks at the moment...
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l163/inneskong/backfromthedead.jpg
In the picture above ive just put all the parts on to see how far out the bonnet alignment is and too see how the wings fitted. The wings are pattern parts so they were never going to be a perfect fit. Seen pattern panelsin the past that have needed alot of panel beating and moving about to get the wings to fit correctly and get nice sized even gaps. I wish i had bout some mint genuine items!
After plenty of fecking around ive managed to get all the panels lined up perfect:) Now im going to take the drivers one back off, weld a new sill and back arch on and that will be her ready fr painting!! Cant wait:D:bananajump:
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l163/inneskong/finalfit.jpg
Also bought her some new wheels:) Cost me £150 with new tyres:Banane44:
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l163/inneskong/wheels.jpg
Roll on paint day!!:D

Good on you. I remember reading about the crash and hoping you'd want to repair the damage. It's nice to see cars like this being repaired despite the financial side of things - that's what this club is all about. :)
Keep us posted.

Glad your fixing it. The SX(I) is my favorite MK2 Astra (in the grey). I also nearly bought an SX this time last year but it wasn't in quite as good condition as the GL that I had at the time.
Get some more photo's up once its painted and bring it to billing in the summer.
Really glad to see you are fixing this one matey, I remember your other thread and thi is a really tidy car. Gotta keep it alive!

Good - we need more non-GTE models within the club. Being a purist, of course I'd like to see some more completely standard models as well, but I guess these days driving around in a 1.2 Merit (completely standard) isn't at the top of everyone's list of life ambitions. Mr Rusty might disagree, but I did say 'standard'.
I've been beginning to think about Billing and how we might repeat our series of mini awards at the shows this year. We're considering adding categories that pick out the rarer models, as it's these that made the mk2 the success it was.
So that's just one reason it's good to see an SXI being fixed.

i had to do the same as innes with my old sxi, i also had a slight front end smash when some one pulled out in front of me. i owned it for near 5 years and it was the bestest car ive ever had! ( appart from my mk2 escort! )
i really like the sxi's, my ideal astra would be an xe or let'd sxi but it would have to be mint too.

Thanks guys. Anyone know alot about this engine? tuning wise? What would be my best set up? Ive already got full ashley system on it and it runs sweet:) Pretty standard otherwise. I did have a bolt on filter but my carb kept freezing on me on the way to school every morning:( So ive been running the standard filer ever since with the heat sheild on the manifold to draw the hot air. If i used the T40s would they freeze the petrol as often? Its very cold where i live. But i want more power!!! Ive got twin 40s in the garage but need a goood rebuild/clean! Just got a manifold for them. What kindov cam should i use? (For almost everyday driving) Dont care about the fuel consumption as long as she runs good and can use her alot:) I heard these engines are slightly restriced?! Is that Bullcrap? Its a 1.6sv. N e info would be appreciated:) Kong

Tunning wise you need to speak to RossMk2. He has a highly tuned sx
Ross_Mk2
29-01-2007, 09:12 AM
Erm... Well the petrol does not freeze :D I have had some pretty cold mornings around these parts as of late and a few pumps on the pedal and she starts first time everytime (without a choke). The servicing is rather easy if i do say so myself, i ordered the tuning guide and service kit from Dellorto (if yours are webber the book is for them also) and got on with it myself, was a nice little job too you will learn quite alot about them if you don't know it all already!
after the service i went to a local tuners and yes these engines are rather restricted 6000rpm and you hit the limiter! I'm still not happy with the tuning and when money allows me and the old girl are off up yorkshire way to a guy (bogg brothers) who will sort it out!!!
The car also has a Kent Cam and i use mine everday average around 150miles a week and ok the mpg is rather low but i am hoping it can get better with the right tuner!
I am also using an Ashley system from 4-1 manifold back to a 3" single exit they are good systems so i have heard and this one suits the car i think!
Thats all i can tell you, if there is something else to know i may have put it in my show us yours section (link to follow) also the guy i bought the car off is a member on here now Astranomical Lee so he might add to this also!!
Good Luck!

If you wanted to keep it a 1.6 i'd get a nova GSI for a transplant. Probably more reliable way of getting standard 100bhp.
Uprating often means less reliability, and you wouldn't have to worry about icy carbs.

I have neen humming' and harring' about this engine for a while now with various posts saying its a better 1.6 engine to use and its fuel injection and i can still but my twin 40's to it if need be!
Just can't find one and i don't know what would have to be done car loom wise to change the engines!

Id rather the twin 40s than an injection purley for the sound of them:D Theres just no tuners on the island if i wanted them set up properly like on the rolling road. But im sure i could take it for a trip on the mainland one day:D I was thinking about the wiring too, i dont know what would need to be done to the loom for the GSi engine. Id rather keep the engine thats in too keep it original and modify it:)

I bought a set of 6 month old $400 4 stud fox alloys for $200 as the bloke moved on to a 5 stud v6 Cdx Vectra and obviosly they wouldn't fit and he was scrapping the vectra he had.
Now I've got a V6 vectra with a mixture of steel and ally wheels and 5 bald tyres and now I've got the same problem the fox alloys won't fit :hissyfit:

Tommorow ile be putting the wishbones and rod ends on..might just leave it till after the m.o.t as the ones on are good enough. Put a skirt on tonight..Wht you all think? With or without skirts???

Wee update..
Ive been fiddling about cleaning under the bonnet for a wee while. Im away to buy some polish tommorow the get all the overspray in the bay off. It was all shiney and laqured up!
A few weeks ago i changed a rear wheel cylinder (thanks GTEman for the lend of you tools and land:thumbsup:) as it had distributed brake fluid everywhere, other than where it was supposed to lol. I shall get some pictures up soon.
And im still waiting for that bloody grill!
I blackend my grey bits on the back bumper with bumper trim stuff but i got an uneaven finish here and there. Big difference though! There getting painted when i go home next any way. Im going away to sea soon so ile have money to spend on her again. Im debating whether to sell the green car to get some money for a change of engine:D Innes

Hello again everyone.
Ive been doing a few wee bits on the car recently. I got stopped by the plod the other week, gave me a defects list...insecure battery, drivers side rear foggy and no screenwash...tw@!! :hissyfit:
Fixed all that up and i got my new grill on there..

Thanks buddy:thumbsup:
So, more updates...
Tommorow in replacing another wheel cylinder, i replaced the driver side one not so long ago but the passenger sides perished now. Should be an easy job as i replaced the flexi's for the MOT not so long ago..i can just take it off from there and free it off on the bench. Then on friday morning the engine and box is coming out so i can strip and paint the engine bay and clean up the engine:) Ive also got to hide the rest of my loom by re routing it like i did with some of it before it got painted...ive got some new cabling and some heat shink ready. And then ive got to free off the rear adjusters for the damping on the shocks as they seem to have seized :duh: (anyone done this before??? I dont think i can use heat because i dont be wanting to wreck the seals:( ) Are mk3 springs the same as the mk2?? Ive got 60mm front ones so thats another job if they fit:)
So..watch this space...its going to be a picture heavy weekend!!

Well ive been working away most of the weekend. The engines out and painted, and now im just prepping up the inner wings for spraying them tommorow. Unfortunatly my camera is in a box somewhere in the spare room and cat find it, i havent had the chance to pack everything away since i moved back from glasgow! I do have some phone photos ill load up with the rest when im done. I also noticed my engine mounts are completely shagged! So ile need to order some:thumbsup:

I had to chuck the engine back in sharpish as i got called away to work and i needed the car! So the engines all painted and back in, i just need to take it out again when i come home to do the inner wings and tidy things up!
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l163/inneskong/P1010247.jpg
And i got me a new project too..unfortunatly its not a vaux:wasntme:
BMW 325 Tds
Knackered power steering pump (new one included in sale)
A broken Spring
And a wee tidy up needed:)
Orite for just under £500:Banane44:
And she flies! Got a chip for her too, my mate had one and smashed it so he ripped the chip off it before the insurance dude turned up!
She sounds just like a petrol straight 6 when you give it some stick!

Hallo folks!
I;m back from sea now:)
Got a few plans while i'm home for the next 2 months.
I'm pulling the engine out again when i get some good weather. I had to put the engine back in quick when i was home last before i got a chance to paint the engine bay. I've prepped it all up so it just need a blast of paint when the engines out. Then when i get the Beemer out the bigger garage i can strip all that waxoil off and paint the undercarrage. So watch this space:)

Howdy howdy people!!
Two year membership paid for so im back for a while:)
Was driving the car last week and the rad burst so I started removing the old one after ordering a new one...but i just couldnt stop...i couldnt stop unbolting things...so now shes stripped and seam welded!! Just having a wee shop about for a LET. I feel a bit bad though...I loved the originallity of the car but its time to move on.. but she'll still look the same on the outside bar a wheel change!
I have a few questions for the LET boys...
(1) What engine mounts do i need?
(2) What shafts did you use?
(3) Do i need to change the tank and pump arrangmets?
(4) What do I do for gearing arrangments? At the moment the car has a straight bolt-to-gearbox on the linkage... I belive the f20 and the f28 are the pivot type linkages.
(5) There will be more questions to come no doubt...
I've been collecting parts for the last wee while.. I got some bilstien b8 dampers and spring (125 quid on ebay! Stayed up till the middle of the night for them!!)
Got myself a sensible car too, bought an astra coupe turbo in black on 19's but unfortunatly 3 days after i took it home i hit a massive pothole and it popped my bonnet open...thank god i was only doing 40!! Smashed my windscreen, bonnet, roof and the bonnet hinges tore the tops of the wings off!! Turbs out the spring was missing from the secondary catch. Bugger. The cars fixed but ive been waiting on a windscreen for 5 weeks now:@ There on back order! Thats enough rambling from me...

1. engine/rear box mounts from a 2.0l mk2 and side box mount from a f28
2.i used calibra turbo shafts
3.i use a 1.3 tank and a sard in line pump(i believe the 16v set up is fine)
4. if you have a 8v shell then you cut a inch off your shaft and it goes straight on dont no about the 16v linkage
5.keep um cummin
p.s. love the car

Wellll its been a while! Out at sea until september, ripped the SX into bits when I was home to a bare shell, starting my full restro! The shells pretty good bar the drivers footwell. Ive stich welded the engine bay ready for the new. Broke my heart pulling the old 1.6 out but I'll be using that for another project once I get another shell!!
I've got most of the bits for the conversion now, just looked at an engine before I went away, a low mile C20let, he says he'll keep it until I get back:) The bits I need just now are: A drivers door, two new front wings. I think id rather second hand gen wings, the patern panels I got last time were a bitch to fit, all the suage lines were miles off!
So keep your eyes peeled for my nut and bolt restro:D

Hello dudes! Its been a while!
I'm home and I have been busy! Got the car completely stripped out and on my roll-over jig! Just started stripping all the wax oil off and I now have the underneath nice and shiny bare metal. Got a few thing to do under there before I get any paint on. Two drain holes and a drivers side foot well to weld in and few other little bits and pieces. Im going to copy Graham (GTEMAN) and extend my drains out from the sills. The sills aren't bad, they were done the last time but I'm going to go for all new panels all around. I'm still collecting bits and have my eye on an engine, the last deal fell through but this one looks better and its quite close to where I get the ferry form the mainland. He also has an F28 with the 2WD conversion so that's a bonus:) Only 49K on the engine and box:) I'll get some pictures up later hopefully:)

And the other toy I bought a last year..been spending my money in this rather than the mk2:( I bought it standard, Z20let, vxr blower and actuator with twin seals regal boost resurculation valve, 11l intercooler, 63mm chrome piping all around, unknown exhaust, twin core motorsport rad, eibach springs, BBS LM 18x8 with 215/35 streeech:D Got a few bits coming for this too, the EDS remap tool and a GSI bumper to let my intercooler out. And a set of coilovers. That should me about done with it I think:) I was looking at pistons and rods this morning but I think I will leave it until after Xmas, I really need to get cracking with the MK2.
